In 2004, Oscar Garcia was one of the state’s first bilingual HIV educators. His boss thought Garcia should dress in drag and hand out condoms in the clubs. Although he had to learn how to apply make-up and he shook with nervousness, “La Pakis” was born. The name is in tribute to Paquita La Del Barrio, a Grammy-nominated Mexican singer. “It has let me pass on educational messages…we are equal just different in perspective.” Garcia also hosts talent shows, choreographs dances for quinceaneras, and puts on drag shows for bachelor parties through his company, Pakis Productions. Now a Spanish interpreter with the Durham Health Department, Garcia hosts Nuestra Voz (“Our Voice”) an LGBT radio program, and he volunteers with Entre Amigos (“Among Friends”), a support group. Garcia enjoys helping people access health care and learn to advocate for themselves. He hopes that in 100 years, Orange County’s people “will keep the friendly spirit that we have now.”
