Watercolor Nature Painting for Beginners, Grades 3-7 (Youth Online)

Grades 3-7

In this 4-week, hands-on course, we will experiment with watercolor and mixed media techniques to create watercolor animals and their habitats- both realistic and fantastic!During each week, students will draw and paint different animals and their habitats. Animals of focus will be based on student requests. Students will interact with each other in daily feedback sessions.

 

Week 1: Skill Building and Color Mixing

Week 2-4: Animals drawn and painted directly on the page using different skills and techniques

 

Class Expectations

1. Be kind to one another

2. Wait your turn to speak, or raise your hand using the zoom function

3. Be creative! Don’t be afraid to Explore

4. Listen to the instructor and your classmates

5. Please try to arrive on time for the class. If you are more than 15 minutes late, please watch the video of the class after the class has ended to catch up. The class will be locked 20 minutes after the class begins to minimize interruptions in instruction. I’m happy to chat with you if you have any questions about the class video.

 

Tools for this course:

**I encourage you to gather these materials from around the house. You don’t need to purchase these specific items if you already have them. The sources are suggestions.**

Art Box to store tools in. Cardboard box works well!

Safe, flat place to dry artwork

Table that can get messy

Watercolors Set with red, yellow, blue, black and white (more colors are fine too)

***I encourage you to buy pan watercolors, because beginning students tend to use watercolors too heavily, and tube watercolor tends to make this tendency worse.***

A palette for mixing colors (tupperware lid in white, old tin top, styrofoam tray or plate)

Watercolor Brush Set

Watercolor paper pad 90lb-140lb 10 + Sheets 8x12inches or larger

Watercolor Pencils

*Apron Encouraged*

Mixed Media Materials:

Salt (coarse grain or coarse grain sea salt works best, but table salt will also work)

Rice Crayons (white crayon especially)

Masking Tape

Rubbing Alcohol or alcohol-based hand sanitizer

Paper Towels cotton ball, cotton swab or sponge

Dish of Water Plastic bag or bubble wrap

Regular old towel for drying brushes

Pencil Sharpener

Eraser

Large circle object to trace for Color wheel (about the size of the paper)

Ruler

About the Instructor:

Lauren deSerres is the owner and artist behind Lauren deSerres Fine Art, based in Pittsboro, NC. She is a 2D mixed media artist who creates whimsical imagery of nature and animals to create stories addressing societal and environmental issues. In addition to her original paintings and limited edition giclee prints, Lauren offers art lessons to students of all ages.

Lauren believes that art is a conduit through which we can share the human experience with others. All students are capable of learning and growing in the classroom, and treating students with respect and patience is the key to maintaining a safe and joyous classroom community.

 

This class is conducted online! A computer with audio, video, and internet functionality is required. Student gives permission for The ArtsCenter and for instructor to use their image and comments in class recordings for promotional non-commercial purposes. Refunds and exchanges are not offered for online classes. 

All ArtSchool registrations have a $3 processing fee added upon check-out.
