Form Follows Function: Throwing with Purpose (Section A)

September 9, 2019 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

Architect Louis Sullivan’s famous axiom “form follows function” meant that the purpose of a building should be the starting point for its design. Many potters would say the same is true for functional pottery. In this class we will concentrate on the function of wheel-thrown forms and how that purpose should inform the details of their design—i.e. how a drinking vessel tapers at the rim, how a mug’s handle accommodates fingers, and/or how a bowl contains a curved surface. Whatever your wheel-throwing goal, this focus will improve your work.

Prerequisite: at least one wheel-throwing class.

Materials:

Basic wheel-throwing tool kit, towels, apron (optional)

$20/bag of clay (beyond one bag included in course fee)

Section A) Molly Cronenwett – Mondays, 9:30am-12pm, Sept 9 – Oct 28 (not 9/16)

Tuition includes one bag of clay and covers glazes and firing fees, but not tools. Students may need to purchase a basic tool kit prior to the first class.

You can attend the Ceramics Open Studio during the duration of your class and up to two weeks after class ends. Go to this link for more information.

All ArtSchool registrations have a $3 processing fee added upon check-out.
