Films about tobacco, including two different versions of “Tobaccoland USA” made by March of Time in 1939, with scenes from the Buren Ellis farm near Bahama and Liggett & Myers factories and warehouses in Durham. Also on the program is “Princess Nicotine; or, The Smoke Fairy” made by J. Stuart Blackton in 1909, and “Cigarette Blues” featuring musician Sonny Rhodes, made by Les Blank and Alan Govenar in 1985. Plus vintage cigarette commercials, banned from the airwaves since 1971, and other bits and butts of tobacco history.
