“I had been looking at him through reverse binoculars,” explains Jock Lauterer about his brother Nick who died at age 15. Nick was a troubled teen, killed by a drunk driver after running away by bicycle to Raleigh. “It took me 50 years to love him.” A UNC senior lecturer and director of the Carolina Community Media Project, Jock is writing a memoir with photos called Keeper. “It is a tale of redemption and rediscovering a lost brother and asking for forgiveness” that Jock hopes will “speak to anyone who has had a complex, nuanced loss like this.” Jock has a mountain cabin he visits monthly where he does his best writing and thinking; thus, “getting out of the bubble” is the most frequent reason he leaves the area. While there, he also builds Zen rock towers, counts salamanders, and “eats barbeque with guys in overalls.”
