WHY YOU SHOULD GO: You know those shops you can spend hours in, and still feel like you haven’t seen it all? Those places that seem to have the perfect gift for that impossible-to-shop-for friend? The ones that warrant a serious stock up on cards for every imaginable occasion? Cameron’s is one of those shops. In addition to offering a wide variety of gifts ranging from hilarious to functional to beautiful, they offer items made by local artisans. Jewelry, original artwork, and all sorts of hand crafted items by local folks are available. If it isn’t made locally, it is either made in the USA or is Fair Trade imported. And, if that’s not enough, there’s also a Shrine Room in the back dedicated to Elvis, Jesus, and Frieda Kahlo, to name but a few. Oh, and there are clocks with wagging tales.
It’s no wonder Cameron’s has been around since 1977. First opened by Danny Cameron on Church and Rosemary St. in Chapel Hill, the shop has gone through several incarnations and locations. It’s now owned by Bridget Pemberton-Smith and Wendy Smith, and in 2012, moved to its current location near The ArtsCenter and Cat’s Cradle. You can read more about Cameron’s on their website and follow them on Facebook. Or better yet, stop by and support a great local business supporting our arts community.
