Upcoming Hillsborough Classic Films: Young Frankenstein

February 18 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The film this month is Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein, and we’ll be showing it on Sunday, February 18, at 2pm at the Passmore Center, 103 Meadowland Drive, Hillsborough. Registration in advance is not required but is appreciated by the Center. You can register by calling 919 245-2015, or through our website,
www.hillsboroughclassicfilms.com
The film is free, of course, and so is the popcorn.
Diana Newton, filmmaker, writer, and former Board Member and Film Programmer at the Chelsea Theater, will lead the discussion. Her documentary film, The Ties That Bind, can be streamed on UNC-TV.
TRAILERS. Part of the comic genius of this film is the faithfulness with which it follows the early Frankenstein films, and so before we link the Young Frankenstein trailer below we’d like to give you the opportunity to see the trailers for the two James Whales films that it pays tribute to and parodies, Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein(1935), both starring Boris Karloff as Frankenstein’s monster, with Bride also starring Elsa Lanchester as the Bride. If you choose to watch those trailers, pay special attention in the first to the equipment in Frankenstein’s laboratory. Much of that equipment was saved and put into storage by the staff member who assembled it, only to be taken out of storage forty years later for Brooks to use in Young Frankenstein. In the second, one of the things to notice is Lanchester’s hair style. Madelaine Kahn will be wearing that style at the end of our film.

Bride of Frankenstein (1935):

Two very famous scenes, one from each of the films, are lovingly parodied in Young Frankenstein, the monster with the young girl (1931) and the monster with the hermit (1935). If you are interested you can find both those scenes on YouTube.
