Promoting and strengthening the artistic and cultural development of Orange County, North Carolina
In this new series of works, Wan uses objects including wax-coated rusted bells, fake collars, erasers transparent collar supporters, gloves and ceramic spoons to portray women’s voice that have been forced into silence.
Throughout history, women’s voices have often been silenced. Yet silence itself can still send a loud and clear message. It is this concept that Wan has chosen to depict through hundreds of rusted bells that have been coated with wax so that they no longer make any sound. This simple yet evocative image allows the artist to the express the sensation of hidden voices that have been forced into silence but retain a pure inner presence that echoes through the silent bells. Wan conveys this concept of a silent force in the space visually both visually and through dance in the opening night April 10th 5:50-6:10pm.
First time collaboration with a young choreographer, Pin-Han Lin from Taiwan who will work with two dancers; Emilie Raleigh, and Megan Ross to create a dance piece to address the idea of silent tears responding to the violence, sacrifice and compromise existing in our prejudiced and unequal society. At then end, we hope through this collaboration, we use movement and object to raise awareness for those whose voices remain silenced.
