African-American Poetry, Past and Present

Celebrate Black History Month with a poetry reading featuring Ashley Harris, Fred Joiner, Caleb Torain, and Gideon Young. Ashley Harris is a former youth-slam competitor and the author of If the Hero of Time Was Black. Fred Joiner is a two-time winner of the Larry Neal Award for Poetry and a 2014 Artist Fellowship Winner awarded by the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Caleb Torain is a local youth poet, and Gideon Young is a member of the Carrboro Poets Council whose poetry appears in publications including Carve Magazine, Spillway, Wild Plum Haiku, and Black Gold: an Anthology of Black Poetry. The event is free and open to the public. This program is supported by the Orange County Arts Commission.
