Followers of the OCAC on Facebook probably noticed our post this week showing off beautiful hand-painted lanterns hanging in our Hillsborough office. These “work samples” were submitted by The Chinese School at Chapel Hill as part of their OCAC Arts Grant application this fall. In addition to enthusiastically approving their grant application for this new community event, we also gladly displayed their gorgeous lanterns!
You can make your own lantern at the event taking place on the Chinese New Year, or Saturday, January 28, from 11am-6pm at University Place in Chapel Hill. Local artists will host booths where you can paint, glue or bedazzle your own lantern in preparation for the Lantern Parade taking place later in the day.
In addition to lantern making, the event will feature a Dragon Dance workshop, more than 40 activity booths and exhibits, Chinese cultural performances and authentic Asian food booths. There will also be a Silent Auction of artist lanterns to support local schools.
