A native of Minnesota, Robert Joesting came to North Carolina in the late 1960s after college, settling in Chapel Hill where he quickly came to appreciate the local music and arts scene. Bob was a voracious reader and a person of wide-ranging interests — from space exploration to ancient cultures, technology to genealogy, politics to the arts. He enjoyed theater, music, poetry, gallery exhibits, and 2nd Friday Art Walks. His own artistic pursuits included abstract photography and scriptwriting, and he designed lighting and sound for several local stage productions, including a production of Samuel Beckett’s “Happy Days” which later had an off-Broadway run. His desire to support the arts led to his service with the longstanding Cultural Arts Group which he co-founded with local artist and arts advocate Nerys Levy. Bob passed away on December 7, 2022, but his interest in the arts never faded; a month before his death, he attended a talk by Nerys and Carol Lassiter at FRANK Gallery in Chapel Hill.
