Upcoming Film: “Singin’ in the Rain”

October 11 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Free

THE HILLSBOROUGH CLASSIC FILM SOCIETY will present the 1952 musical “Singin’ in the Rain,” starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds, at 2pm Sunday, October 11, 2026, at the Passmore Center, 103 Meadowlands Drive in Hillsborough. There will be an introduction before the film and a discussion afterwards. As always, the film is open to the public and free, and the popcorn is free too. The film is subtitled.

If you’re someone who doesn’t get excited about musicals, this is still something you shouldn’t miss. Wikipedia has gathered all the major accolades in one place; rather than paraphrase them, here’s the quote:
“The film was only a modest hit when it was first released. Today it is frequently cited as the greatest musical film and one of the greatest films ever made. It topped the AFI’s Greatest Movie Musicals list, ranked as the fifth-greatest American motion picture of all time in its updated list of the greatest American films in 2007, having ranked as the tenth greatest in the original 1998 list, and Kelly’s rendition of ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ ranked third in their list of the greatest film songs. … In 2005, the British Film Institute included it in its list of the 50 films to be seen by the age of 14. In 2008, Empire magazine ranked it as the eighth-best film of all time. In Sight & Sound magazine’s 2022 list of the greatest films of all time, Singin’ in the Rain placed 10th. Previously, it had ranked third in their 1982 list and tenth in their 2002 list.”

and here’s the Fandor trailer for the film:

Our speaker will be Francesca Talenti. Francesca was Professor of Media Production at UNC-Chapel Hill. She is a filmmaker and animator, a director and designer who has exhibited her work from The Folger (design, Hamlet, Pericles, Timon of Athens) and the Guthrie (design, Hamlet, Pericles), to Sundance, to PBS National, by way of Mumbai, Goteborg, Casablanca, and many others sites. (Please click on the link at the bottom of this page to learn about her most recent project at the Eno Arts Mill.)

If you would like to attend, please sign up before 3 pm, October 9, by calling the Passmore Center at 919 245-2015 or by going to our site: hillsboroughclassicfilms.com,
scrolling down to the line that says, “PLEASE REGISTER HERE,” and clicking on the link.

Please notice that you are not required to register in advance, and you will not be turned away if you don’t, but the Passmore opens its doors and provides help for the Society on the weekend when they are normally closed. They need to have some indication in advance that the audience will be large enough to justify the expense to the county. Please sign up if you are thinking of coming. (Signing up will also insure that in the unlikely event one of our showings is canceled, we can get in touch with you.)
