As Others See Us: Riffs on Portrait Painting with Lawrence Wheeler

Please join us for a benefit lecture from Lawrence Wheeler, Director Emeritus of the North Carolina Museum of Art! “As Others See Us” will explore how the art of portraiture has evolved through the ages. What are history’s most impactful portraits? What makes a great portrait great?
After the lecture, Director Emeritus Wheeler will take questions from the audience. The event will then adjourn to a reception with light refreshments. Please RSVP at go.unc.edu/portraiture.
All proceeds from this event will support the creation of a portrait of Rev. James Walker, Jr. at UNC-Chapel Hill’s Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies. Rev. Walker was an influential civil rights attorney in North Carolina and one of the first five black students to enroll in the University. His portrait will be the first addition to the Societies’ portrait collection in a half century. To learn more about the Rev. Walker portrait effort, please visit go.unc.edu/walker!
We hope to see you there! Please do not hesitate to reach out to nshue@unc.edu with any questions!
The Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies are a registered student organization at UNC-Chapel Hill and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This event is not affiliated with the North Carolina Museum of Art.
