2018-19 Arts Grants Announced


The Orange County Arts Commission (OCAC) is pleased to announce recipients of the 2018-19 Grassroots Arts Program and Artist Project Grants. The OCAC awarded twenty-four Grassroots Arts Program Grants and fourteen Artist Project Grants, totaling $61,394, to the following organizations and artists:

  • The Art Therapy Institute: Operations support
  • Boomerang Youth: The Citizen Artist
  • Carrboro Elementary School PTA: In-school cultural arts performances
  • Chapel Hill Philharmonia: Operations support
  • Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Foundation: Artist-in-Residence program for Estes Hills Elementary School, Northside Elementary School, and Phillips Middle School
  • Estes Hills Elementary School PTA: In-school cultural arts performances
  • FRANK Gallery: Operations support
  • Free Spirit Freedom: Annual Gospel Music Festival
  • Hillsborough Arts Council: Operating support; Last Fridays Art Walk; Hillsborough Handmade Parade
  • Hillsborough Elementary School PTA: Sounds of Drums Performance and Residency
  • Mary Scroggs Elementary School PTA: Afterschool Arts Enrichment Program
  • McDougle Elementary School PTA: In-school cultural arts performances
  • Music Maker Relief Foundation: Margaret Lance Cemetery Day of Remembrance
  • Musical Empowerment: Operations support
  • New Hope Elementary School: Title 1 Artist-in-Residence Program for New Hope, Efland-Cheeks Global, Central, and Grady Brown Elementary Schools
  • North Carolina Arts in Action: NC Arts in Action at Rashkis Elementary School
  • Orange County Schools/Gravelly Hill Middle School: Cultural Explosion 2019
  • Phillips Middle School PTSA: In-school cultural arts performances
  • Seawell Elementary School: Number Drummer Residency
  • Voices, the Chapel Hill Chorus: Operating support
  • Women’s Voices Chorus: Fall 2018 retreat and Spring 2019 Performance
  • The Women’s Theatre Festival: Production of These Shining Lives

  • Iris Chapman: Documentary: The Closing of a School
  • Max Miller: Supplies for studio art classes
  • Ben Hamburger: Pacific Northwest Plein Air Event travel support
  • Kelly Johnston: Residencies at Penland School of Craft and The Torpedo Factory Art Center
  • Tinka Jordy: Garden Arts Sculpture Show
  • Juliet Kaplan: Development of a new play by Curious Theatre Collective
  • Salome McNutt: The Last Conquistador performance by El Fuego Early Music Ensemble
  • Renzo Ortega: Professional development support for exhibit, Más allá de las estrellas
  • Sol Ramirez: 123 Puppetry Spring Production
  • Marie Rossettie/Benjamin Warshaw: Fafnir Adamites sculpture installation at LEVEL Artist Retreat
  • Nancy Smith: Women Speak 2019 exhibit
  • Heather Tatreau: Dance-Theater Performance for UNC Process Series
  • Kristin Trangsrud and Alma Coefman: Luna’s Magic Flute

OCAC Arts Grants are annually funded by the North Carolina Arts Council, a department of the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, and the Orange County Board of County Commissioners.
