The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough and Mike’s Art Truck are pleased to present another special exhibit of folk art at the Alexander Dickson House in Hillsborough, NC. Highlighted by the work of Savannah artist Rudolph Bostic, “More Outsider Art in the Visitors Center” is the second in a series of shows featuring “outsider” art from a variety of self-taught artists. The collection is on display August 30 through November 28, 2019, inside the historic building which houses the Hillsborough Visitors Center.
The centerpiece of the current exhibit is a group of paintings by Rudolph Bostic, a proud artist with a big smile. Painting on scrap cardboard, Bostic has established a distinctive style illustrating Biblical and mythological scenes with rich, fluid lines. Although his work has found its way into museum collections, this is the debut of these three paintings acquired directly from the artist. The Bostic paintings are accompanied by art from eight other Southern folk artists: Charlie Lucas, Myrtice West, Ab the Flagman, bailey jack, Dede Spitz, Eric Legge, John Henry Toney, and David Bryant.
Artists like these who create “outsider art” have developed their own styles and techniques without regard for – or regard from – the artistic establishment of galleries, museums, and critics. After being “discovered” by collectors, some outsiders have gained a degree of acceptance, even fame, but rarely fortune. An internal spark drives them to keep making art, even when art does not pay the bills. Known or unknown, each artist is unique, as are each of their creations.

The Alexander Dickson House and Hillsborough Visitors Center is located at 150 E. King St., in downtown Hillsborough.
