SUMMARY:Lectures in Art History: Ashley West\, Temple University
DESCRIPTION:“Local Innovation and Intermedial Thinking in Pre-Modern Augsburg” \nZoom\nRegistration Link at website (available until start of event) \nIn such an internationally-connected—even globally-connected—cultural and financial center as Augsburg in the early sixteenth century\, what is the importance of the sense of place and locality generated by its citizens and artists\, and what might we learn by drilling down to the street-level of activity and interaction taking place there? Central to this story is the painter and print designer\, Hans Burgkmair\, whose name appears in the Augsburg guild records in 1498 as master in the Painter\, Glazier\, and Sculptors’ Guild. Soon after becoming a master Burgkmair began to keep a steady workshop of apprentices – introducing the first into the guild records in 1499\, with three more listed in 1501. In 1508 Wolfgang Resch\, one of Augsburg’s most skilled woodblock-cutters\, lived in Burgkmair’s house. Tax records also indicate that the sculptor Sebastian Loscher resided with Burgkmair from 1510-14. The esteemed imperial armorers\, the Helmschmieds\, were particularly close to the Burgkmair household. In this talk I shall explore the living-working shared spaces of some of Augsburg’s key artist workshops\, arguing that the close proximity of various named craftsmen working in different materials brought about not only collaborations and creative energy in multi-media works\, but foremost artistic and technical innovations by Burgkmair during these years\, especially in the sphere of printmaking. What’s at stake ultimately here is the illumination of a localized topographic view of key artistic sites and networks—personal and professional —and an expansive idea of what the technical\, manual\, and cognitive processes were for a master like Burgkmair. \nAshley West is an art historian of the early modern period\, 1400-1700\, with a particular expertise in the history\, practice and theory of printmaking and with interests in imagery produced around different kinds of cross-cultural encounters between Europe and the Ottoman Empire\, the “New World\,” Africa and the East Indies. She studies processes of cultural transmission and the dissemination of knowledge in the early modern period\, as well as opportunities for artistic exchange through travel and portable objects\, pilgrimages\, diplomacy\, warfare\, global trade and exploration and early collecting practices. \nWest has been a fellow with the international research project on “BildEvidenz. History and Aesthetics” at the Kunsthistorisches Institut at the Freie Universität in Berlin and her work has been supported also by the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA) and the Andrew Mellon Foundation\, among others. She is currently working on the visual culture and technologies of sixteenth-century Augsburg as a site for negotiating the global and the local in everyday experience; and is co-editing a volume on the Cultural History of Collecting in Early Modern Europe for Bloomsbury Academic Press. \nWest has published on early etchings; woodcuts of late medieval relic collections; notions of visual history and the German sense of the past; early modern antiquarianism and early representations of peoples from the coast of Africa and India. DESCRIPTION:Registration Link on our website (available until start of event) \nPaul Mpagi Sepuya is a Los Angeles-based artist working in photography and an Associate Professor in Media Arts at UC San Diego. His work is in the collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art\, the Getty and Guggenheim Museums\, LACMA\, MoMA\, The Studio Museum in Harlem\, and the Whitney Museum\, among others. Recent exhibitions include solos at Document in Chicago and the Bemis in Omaha\, a survey of work at CAM St. Louis\, and a project for the 2019 Whitney Biennial. \nAn endowment established in 1983 through the generosity of Nancy and Robin Hanes supports the Art Department’s Visiting Artist Series. This important program brings both established and emerging artists to campus to discuss their work in public lectures and to offer individual critiques to our M.F.A. students. You will hear how you can get your artwork in front of this type of buyer. \nDiscussions will include valuable tips and information for submitting your designs for licensing consideration\, the things that ‘always’ sell\, and what royalties and contracts look like. DESCRIPTION:On Zoom\, Registration Link available on our website until start of event \nStephanie Syjuco works in photography\, sculpture\, and installation\, moving from handmade and craft-inspired mediums to digital editing and archive excavations. Using critical wit and collaborative co-creation\, her projects leverage open-source systems\, shareware logic\, and flows of capital\, in order to investigate issues of economies and empire. Recently\, she has focused on how photography and image-based processes are implicated in the construction of racialized\, exclusionary narratives of history and citizenship. She was a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellow at the National Museum of American History in Washington DC in 2019/2020. She is featured in Season 9 of the acclaimed PBS documentary series Art21: Art in the Twenty-First Century. Recent exhibitions include “Being: New Photography” at the Museum of Modern Art\, New York; “Public Knowledge\,” at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; “Stephanie Syjuco: Rogue States\,” at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis; and “Disrupting Craft: the 2018 Renwick Invitational” at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. \nBorn in the Philippines in 1974\, Syjuco received her MFA from Stanford University and BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. She is the recipient of a 2014 Guggenheim Fellowship Award\, a 2009 Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Award\, and a 2020 Tiffany Foundation Award. Her work has been exhibited widely\, including at MoMA/P.S.1\, the Whitney Museum of American Art\, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, ZKM Center for Art and Technology\, the California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art\, The 12th Havana Bienal\, The 2015 Asian Art Biennial (Taiwan)\, among others. A long-time educator\, she is an Associate Professor in Sculpture at the University of California\, Berkeley. She lives in Oakland\, California. \nAn endowment established in 1983 through the generosity of Nancy and Robin Hanes supports the Art Department’s Visiting Artist Series. SUMMARY:“From Xo Ho to Mi Li: Horace Walpole and China” by Peter Sabor
DESCRIPTION:Jane Austen & Co. presents the third event in our “Asia & the Regency” series. Horace Walpole’s Hieroglyphic Tales are remembered as some of the most surreal literature produced in eighteenth- century England. In this talk\, Peter Sabor (McGill University) will explore the depiction of China in English literature through Walpole’s stories. \nAmong the many eighteenth-century European authors who took an interest in China without crossing or approaching its borders was Horace Walpole. The furthest east that he ever travelled was to Naples\, during his Grand Tour of Europe in 1739-41. He did\, however\, begin reading about China from an early age. In 1735\, as an eighteen-year-old undergraduate at King’s College\, Cambridge\, he acquired the opulent\, four-volume folio edition of Jean Baptiste du Halde’s Description géographique\, historique\, chronologique\, politique\, et physique de l’Empire de la Chine. Walpole’s early immersion in du Halde’s magisterial work seems to have worked on his imagination over the years; he put his interest in China to use in four of his later works. In this free virtual conversation\, we’ll hear from Jackson about this 1997 work\, others in the series and about how it fits into his larger body of photography. \nRegister below for a free ticket. A Zoom link will be sent to all registered participants via email. \nZig Jackson (Rising Buffalo) is a photographer of Mandan\, Hidatsa\, and Arikara descent who was raised on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation in North Dakota. Though art was always part of his life\, he began formally learning sketching\, painting\, and then photography during his primary and second education within the government Indian boarding school systems. Jackson earned a bachelor’s degree in education at Northeastern Oklahoma State\, while also studying with several area artists\, before pursuing his interest in photography through continued studies at the University of New Mexico. In 1994\, Jackson received a Master of Fine Arts in photography from San Francisco Art Institute. He is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards and grants including a residential fellowship at the Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito\, California; a Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation Grant for excellence in the photographic arts\, which culminated with an exhibition\, “Entering Zig’s Indian Reservation\,” at the American Indian Contemporary Arts center in San Francisco; a National Millennium Survey Grant; and the inaugural Beaumont Newhall Award for Photographic Excellence from the New Mexico Humanities Council. In 2005\, Jackson became the first Native American photographer collected by the Library of Congress\, when twelve of his images were accessioned by its Prints and Photographs Division. Often conspicuously disjointed against an otherwise unadorned tabletop\, these detailed\, three-dimensional objects serve as cues to better envision a larger\, shared narrative of the game. During our recent Covid-induced seclusion\, the idea of scatter terrain offered an appropriate metaphor for imagined adventure when real travel was prohibited\, especially against a backdrop that sometimes felt featureless\, repetitive\, or isolating. This exhibition presents pockets of “terrain” – peculiar landscapes\, architectural gestures\, intimate domestic corners – as a metaphorical means of escape from the pandemic and connection to those who are far away. \nThis selection of artists at first reflects a collective and sometimes oblique response to the pandemic\, a reckoning with solitude and a longing for new places and people. Several art objects were created when most of us were still sheltering at home\, and these artists articulated their anxieties and awareness of their limited domestic spaces through their works.  Now\, as many of us are still struggling to redefine a “normal” world\, the works shown here may be seen in relation to other fractures and traumas in our environment. For instance\, the invented landscapes and abstracted spaces echo our concerns about the ongoing climate crisis.  Because some of the artists depict terrains that defiantly resist conventional illustrations of sublime\, pristine nature\, the works might be seen as fantastical dystopias. Other artists tackle contemporary social issues of personal and political identity to question the notion of belonging\, within a persistent\, and perhaps increasingly hostile world. What started as a call for disparate glimpses into distant lives and locations is now shifting toward a realization that our communal sense of place is still marked by a reckoning with an ailing world and an urgent need for new perspectives. \nABOUT EJECTA PROJECTS \nFounded by artist Anthony Cervino and art historian Shannon Egan\, Ejecta Projects is an art gallery\, an artist’s studio\, and a quiet space to consider collaborative artistic and curatorial undertakings. Located in downtown Carlisle\, Pennsylvania\, Ejecta Projects not only offers exhibition and consignment opportunities for artists but also serves as a gesture toward community investment\, a place for connection among people who crave an atmosphere of warmth and creativity. The space is conceived as the progeny of a 2015 co-written book and co-curated exhibition titled Ejecta. Ejecta Projects\, like its earlier iteration\, examines themes of failure and success\, parenthood and marriage\, materiality and mortality. Exhibitions and endeavors not only reflect these personal and professional preoccupations but also respond to encounters with a broad repertoire of artists and engaged audiences. \nAnthony Cervino is an artist-educator who has exhibited his work professionally for over 20 years. He is a Professor of Art at Dickinson College\, where he has taught sculpture since 2006. A native of Pennsylvania\, Cervino studied art at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Towson University before settling in Carlisle\, PA. His sculptures have been included in recent exhibitions at The Gallery at Flashpoint in Washington\, DC\, the Institute of Contemporary Art at the Maine College of Art\, the Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art\, The Arlington Arts Center\, the Minneapolis College Of Art & Design\, and the Susquehanna Museum of Art\, among others. \nShannon Egan received her BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her MA and Ph.D. in the History of Art from Johns Hopkins University. She currently is Director of the Schmucker Art Gallery at Gettysburg College\, where she curates exhibitions of contemporary and historical art and teaches courses in art history. She is the author of articles on photographers Edward S. Curtis and Jeff Wall. DESCRIPTION:Are you a mid-career crafts-person struggling to leave your day job or a new-to-the biz creative with dollar signs in your eyes?  \nJoin Triangle ArtWorks’ experienced instructors in an intensive business school-style experience aimed at you. From business structures to support systems\, from credit cards to cash flow\, this course will walk you through the process of creating a craft business that makes money. Each week you’ll work on activities and projects that lead you to a clear vision of your business and a business plan. You’ll leave the class with a binder full of worksheets\, ideas\, contacts and checklists and be energized to make your craft business succeed. \nThis course is based on the REAL Entrepreneurship courses program and is a hands-on\, activity-based experience. If you’ve tried to understand business principles before and been bored or frustrated\, this is for you. If you want tools to understand your own craft business better\, this is for you. You will learn to become a better networker\, how to set up a solid business structure\, and about financial structures that can help you make better business decisions. Course topics will include cash flow\, production\, costs and pricing\, inventory\, local resources\, sales and promotions and more. These arts-business-specific skills are not currently offered in most university fine craft and fine art programs\, but are essential for artists to function as businesses. \nAll registrants will be invited to join a course-specific Facebook group where weekly live-video sessions will be available for participants to ask instructors questions outside of the meeting times. This group will be an integral part of the course so membership is encouraged. \n\n\nBoth beginners and more experienced artisans can benefit from this course. \n\n\nParticipants are strongly encouraged to attend all sessions. \n\n\nThis course will be held on Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how the constant flow of the latest fashion apparel\, greeting card designs\, housewares\, handbags\, kitchenware\, calendars\, planners\, coffee mugs and the many thousands of other consumer products look the way they do? If you have ever looked at a mug or bedsheet or gift bag and thought “MY art would look great on that!” then this class is for you. \nThis class will help you begin to see consumer products in a whole new way.  You will hear about the art licensing industry and the layers of consultants\, art directors and product developers who collaborate with artists to put their artwork on consumer products. You will hear how you can get your artwork in front of this type of buyer. \nDiscussions will include  valuable tips and information for submitting your designs for licensing consideration\, the things that ‘always’ sell\, and what royalties and contracts look like. There will be time for Q&A with Willie throughout the class. \nLicensing work isn’t for every artist\, but for many it can be an excellent income source that does not dilute the original work you create. \nThis class explores: \n\n\nwhat licensing your art means \n\n\nhow you would go about getting your artwork or illustrations licensed \n\n\nhow to introduce yourself and your art to potential companies \n\n\nthe pros and cons of art licensing \n\n\nwhat are usual royalty rates and contract lengths \n\n\nresources and strategies for entering the art licensing industry \n\n\n\n\nAbout Willie Green-Aldridge\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWillie Green-Aldridge is a painter\, designer and successful licensor of her art with artwork selling in boutiques and specialty stores\, online\, and in large retailers including garden centers\, gift shops and home decor retailers. Her background in successfully navigating the world of licensing includes experience creating themed groupings of work based on her abstract paintings as well as work featuring iconographic images and quotes. \nWillie’s work has appeared on stationery\, home décor\, wall art\, and gift products across the US and internationally. DESCRIPTION:Zoom: Pre-register at the link on our website (available until start of event) \nJiha Moon’s gestural paintings\, mixed media\, ceramic sculpture\, and installations explore fluid identities and the global movement of people and their cultures. She says\, “I am a cartographer of cultures and an icon maker in my lucid worlds.” She is taking cues from wide ranges of history of Eastern and Western art\, colors and designs from popular culture\, Korean temple paintings and folk art\, internet emoticons and icons\, fruit stickers and labels of products from all over the place. She often teases and changes these lexicons so that they are hard to identify yet stay in a familiar zone. \nMoon (b. 1973) is from DaeGu\, Korea and lives and works in Atlanta\, GA. She received her MFA from the University of Iowa\, Iowa City. Her works have been acquired by Asia Society\, New York\, NY\, High Museum of Art\, Atlanta\, GA\, The Mint Museum of Art\, Charlotte\, NC\, Smithsonian Institute\, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden\, Washington\, DC\, Weatherspoon Museum of Art\, Greensboro\, NC and The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts\, Richmond\, VA.
