SUMMARY:SEEDS: Artist Management & Digital Marketing in a Streaming World
DESCRIPTION:Blair Clark\, CEO + Director of Marketing & Strategy at Brooklyn Basement Records\, manager of Ron Pope & Miko Marks  \nDo you even need a manager when streaming is king? How can you market to all the streaming platforms? Rissi and Blair talk about their experiences on both sides of the streaming issue. Listen to this if you want your music in everyone’s ears. \nBlair Clark took a circuitous route to her career in music. While maintaining a full-time position in advertising in New York\, she began managing Ron Pope on the side\, shaping his career as it began to take off. She slowly took on a larger\, more central role in Pope’s project – helping with everything from merchandising and website design to fan engagement initiatives and album production. Proving herself to be an invaluable asset\, Blair quit her job in advertising to manage Ron full-time in 2012 and added other acts to her roster shortly thereafter. Her current roster includes Ron Pope\, Miko Marks\, & Emily Scott Robinson. \nIn addition to her work as a manager\, Blair co-founded Brooklyn Basement Records in 2015. The label was built around a DIY mentality and strives to take the knowledge garnered via years of success in the indie music sphere and apply it to the careers of each artist BBR partners with. With the needs of today’s artists in mind\, BBR has begun to function as a marketing agency for a growing roster of artists that want to retain ownership of their masters\, but need the support of a team behind their release. In 2021 she was named to the board of Directors for Rainey Day Fund\, which supports historically excluded & underrepresented artists in the roots and Americana space. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Schedule C for Artists
DESCRIPTION:Are you getting ready to prepare your 2021 taxes? Confused about write-offs and deductions? \nArtist and tax preparer Janet Ecklebarger will answer questions about the IRS Schedule C\, the tax form that you need to understand as you prepare your taxes for 2021. \nDuring this workshop\, Janet will guide us through the process of identifying and accounting for the many diverse income streams (from contract day jobs to grants\, awards\, and sales) and business-related expenses that comprise the livelihoods of many arts practitioners. Tax legislation is always changing and Janet will address how those changes will affect the various situations for artists and other self-employed individuals. \nA practicing artist herself\, Janet has keen insights into the complexity inherent in filing taxes for creative careers. Her experience working with clients for over 17 years has also contributed to her knowledge of record-keeping strategies that can be implemented throughout the year to help you streamline the process. \nIn addition to sharing her insights on tax-filing best practices for artists\, curators\, and creative producers\, Janet will also be able to address questions pertinent to individualized circumstances. \nPlease note: This class will be live-streamed to a private Facebook group. In order to access the content for re-watch\, participants must join the private FB group. The information to access the FB group will be provided during the class session and will be sent via email following the class. \n  \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Lectures in Art History: Ashley West\, Temple University
DESCRIPTION:“Local Innovation and Intermedial Thinking in Pre-Modern Augsburg” \nZoom\nRegistration Link at website (available until start of event) \nIn such an internationally-connected—even globally-connected—cultural and financial center as Augsburg in the early sixteenth century\, what is the importance of the sense of place and locality generated by its citizens and artists\, and what might we learn by drilling down to the street-level of activity and interaction taking place there? Central to this story is the painter and print designer\, Hans Burgkmair\, whose name appears in the Augsburg guild records in 1498 as master in the Painter\, Glazier\, and Sculptors’ Guild. Soon after becoming a master Burgkmair began to keep a steady workshop of apprentices – introducing the first into the guild records in 1499\, with three more listed in 1501. In 1508 Wolfgang Resch\, one of Augsburg’s most skilled woodblock-cutters\, lived in Burgkmair’s house. Tax records also indicate that the sculptor Sebastian Loscher resided with Burgkmair from 1510-14. The esteemed imperial armorers\, the Helmschmieds\, were particularly close to the Burgkmair household. In this talk I shall explore the living-working shared spaces of some of Augsburg’s key artist workshops\, arguing that the close proximity of various named craftsmen working in different materials brought about not only collaborations and creative energy in multi-media works\, but foremost artistic and technical innovations by Burgkmair during these years\, especially in the sphere of printmaking. What’s at stake ultimately here is the illumination of a localized topographic view of key artistic sites and networks—personal and professional —and an expansive idea of what the technical\, manual\, and cognitive processes were for a master like Burgkmair. \nAshley West is an art historian of the early modern period\, 1400-1700\, with a particular expertise in the history\, practice and theory of printmaking and with interests in imagery produced around different kinds of cross-cultural encounters between Europe and the Ottoman Empire\, the “New World\,” Africa and the East Indies. She studies processes of cultural transmission and the dissemination of knowledge in the early modern period\, as well as opportunities for artistic exchange through travel and portable objects\, pilgrimages\, diplomacy\, warfare\, global trade and exploration and early collecting practices. \nWest has been a fellow with the international research project on “BildEvidenz. History and Aesthetics” at the Kunsthistorisches Institut at the Freie Universität in Berlin and her work has been supported also by the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA) and the Andrew Mellon Foundation\, among others. She is currently working on the visual culture and technologies of sixteenth-century Augsburg as a site for negotiating the global and the local in everyday experience; and is co-editing a volume on the Cultural History of Collecting in Early Modern Europe for Bloomsbury Academic Press. \nWest has published on early etchings; woodcuts of late medieval relic collections; notions of visual history and the German sense of the past; early modern antiquarianism and early representations of peoples from the coast of Africa and India. Her forthcoming book\, Hans Burgkmair and the Visual Translation of Knowledge in the German Renaissance\, reevaluates notions of the German Renaissance through the prints\, drawings and paintings of Hans Burgkmair the Elder\, a contemporary of Albrecht Dürer. \nContact: Christoph Brachmann\, cbrachma@email.unc.edu\nImage credit: attrib. SUMMARY:“From Xo Ho to Mi Li: Horace Walpole and China” by Peter Sabor
DESCRIPTION:Jane Austen & Co. presents the third event in our “Asia & the Regency” series. Horace Walpole’s Hieroglyphic Tales are remembered as some of the most surreal literature produced in eighteenth- century England. In this talk\, Peter Sabor (McGill University) will explore the depiction of China in English literature through Walpole’s stories. \nAmong the many eighteenth-century European authors who took an interest in China without crossing or approaching its borders was Horace Walpole. The furthest east that he ever travelled was to Naples\, during his Grand Tour of Europe in 1739-41. He did\, however\, begin reading about China from an early age. In 1735\, as an eighteen-year-old undergraduate at King’s College\, Cambridge\, he acquired the opulent\, four-volume folio edition of Jean Baptiste du Halde’s Description géographique\, historique\, chronologique\, politique\, et physique de l’Empire de la Chine. Walpole’s early immersion in du Halde’s magisterial work seems to have worked on his imagination over the years; he put his interest in China to use in four of his later works. This talk will study Walpole’s uses of China in these four publications\, as well as an anonymous satirical response: An Answer from Lien Chi in Pekin\, to Xo Ho the Chinese Philosopher in London\, to which is annexed a letter from Philo-Briton to Lien Chi (1757). \nYou can read “Mi Li: A Chinese Fairy Tale” for free at the Literature Network:http://www.online-literature.com/…/hieroglyphic-tales/5/\nOr you can listen to a short audiobook on LibriVox: https://librivox.org/hieroglyphic-tales-by-horace-walpole/ \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:American Tastes in Japanese Art: The Influence of Sherman Emery Lee
DESCRIPTION:At this free virtual talk Dr. James Ulak will offer thoughts on Sherman Emery Lee’s (1918–2008) powerful influence in directing collecting tastes in Japanese art throughout America. Lee’s advice has benefited countless private and institutional collections — including the Ackland Art Museum — from the immediate post-WWII era\, through his distinguished museum career\, and well into his retirement years. His role as a confidant to the Rockefellers is well documented and on display in the Ackland’s current extraordinary exhibition of Asian art\, Buddha and Shiva\, Lotus and Dragon: Masterworks from the Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection at Asia Society \n\n\n	Related
