SUMMARY:Lindy Tuesdays (Starts Oct. 8)
DESCRIPTION:Lindy Hop—was originally the energetic form of partnered swing dancing that began in Harlem in the late 1920s and continues to thrive today.  Lindy works well with big band or jazz and can be danced to slower music as well.  It takes a bit longer to get started as the basic is technically more difficult for both the Leader and the Follower\, but the result is worth it as this dance has many fun variations. \nLindy Charleston (to distinguish it from 20’s Charleston)- ever see people on the dance floor doing Charleston and want to dance like that? Learn Front and Tandem Charleston Variations and add them to your Lindy repertoire. \n\nLindy classes take place every Tuesday of the month\, unless otherwise noted. Beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced level courses start at 6:15pm\, 7:15pm\, and 8:15pm\, respectively. Students may sign up for a month’s worth of classes online\, or drop in for a single class by purchasing a ticket at the front desk for $13. \n  \nOctober 8-29 \nLindy 1 a : 6:15-7:15pm (8-count focus)\nLindy 2: 7:15-8:15 (at least 3 months of Lindy required!)\nLindy 3: 8:15-9:15pm (at least 9 months of Lindy required and permission of instructor) \nFour 1-hour classes: $46 public\, Friends and college students with ID 15% discount; single class: $13 \n  \nLindy 1 (Beginner) \nLindy 1 classes introduce technique and vocabulary in three class sections: 6-count focus\, 8-count focus\, and Charleston focus. SUMMARY:Acting Intensive – Scene Study and Character Development
DESCRIPTION:Developing a character is a combination of how to prepare for the role by making specific choices through text work\, character and scene analysis\, and also how to develop and experience that role while behaving truthfully on the stage\, and on the camera. This course will begin with building a foundation of acting techniques through the exploration of games\, improvisations and scene study. The students will then explore a variety of on-camera acting techniques while applying these skills through weekly on-camera improvisations\, exercises and scenes. The main focus will be on the minimalist style of film acting\, the importance of listening and reacting\, and the challenges actors face in finding organic behavior in front of the camera. The festival\, which also includes two days of public workshops and a late night cabaret\, is a celebration of how puppetry can be used to affect radical change. \nAdmission is $15 or pay-what-you-can. \n  \nArtist: Miranda Elliot Rader \nArtist Bio: Miranda Elliot Rader is a puppeteer and performer from the west coast. She currently lives in Charlottesville\, VA. \nPerforming: Creation (10 min) \nShow Description: “Creation” is a feminist retelling of Genesis 1 and John 1\, “Creation” tells the story of the creation of the world from before the beginning of time to the present day. \n  \nArtist: Rae Red \nArtist Bio: Rae Anna Hample is a puppeteer\, animator\, visual artist and musician\, encouraging laughter in the face of darkness by translating everyday realities into play. Their work exposes magic and wonder within our daily functions\, from the wizardry of sight and color theory to the way water invisibly keeps our lives flowing smoothly like a ghost within the walls. They have presented their work in every type of space imaginable from dive bars and the backs of donut shops to The Museum of Human Achievement\, High Concept Labs\, and The Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History. \nPerforming: Shadow Ballads (40 min) \nShow Description: A collection of traditional ballads about death adapted by Rae Red to be sung along with shadow accompaniment. Using the simple technology of an overhead projector\, Rae creates an eerie yet beautiful experience of storytelling and song. \n  \nArtist: Lyon Forrest Hill \nArtist Bio: Lyon Forrest Hill has been a practicing puppet-maker and puppeteer for 20 years. He is the Artistic Director for the Columbia Marionette Theater in South Carolina. In addition to family-friendly entertainment\, Lyon has enjoyed recognition for his work in puppetry for adults. He has performed at the Puppeteers of America’s Regional and National Festivals\, as well as a number of National Puppet Slams at the Center for Puppetry Arts. He has also attended the O’Neil Puppetry Conference in Waterford\, CT\, and the Puppets in Prague workshop in the Czech Republic. \nPerforming: Tales of Woe: Works by Edgar Allan Poe (45 min) \nShow Description: A Harlequin host guides us through the dark and beautiful works of Edgar Allan Poe. Wire sculptures come alive\, a life-sized paper man is murdered\, and painted dreams drift by in this two-person show by Lyon Forrest Hill. Tales of Woe takes a fresh look at classic and obscure works by the master of the macabre using a unique integration of puppet\, illustration\, and performer. This piece of was work-shopped at the Eugene O’Neil Theater Center in Waterford\, CT and was performed at DragonCon in 2018. \n\n\n	Related

In 2016\, abandoned ships received a Jim Henson Foundation Family grant for its original production What Keeps Us. \nPerforming: Waiting: Two experimental Puppet Tales (30 min) \nShow Description: “Waiting: Two experimental Puppet Tales” consists of “Insomnia” and “In the morning.” “Insomnia” is a table-top and object theatre piece about the intimacy of and longing for sleep. In the morning is a table-top show about the need and struggle to believe in a better tomorrow. \n  \nArtist: Edwin Salas \nArtist Bio: Edwin Salas is a puppeteer and performer with a background in dance from Mexico City currently based in Asheville\, NC. He has toured all over the world\, and was most recently seen at the National Puppetry Festival in Minneapolis. \nPerforming: Frijolito and The Orange Monster (45 min) \nShow Description: Our hero called “Frijolito\,” which means “Tiny Bean\,” is second-generation Mexican immigrant in the USA. Made in the style of glove puppet influenced by the tradition of the Comedia del Arte le Guarattele Napolitane from Italy\, this puppet show follows Frijolito as he attempts to rescue his girlfriend from an ICE detention center\, confronts racism\, and cheats death. \n  \nArtist: Toybox Theater \nArtist Bio: Toybox Theater is a multi-award-winning company\, performing for audiences of all ages for 20 years. Awards include: “Fan Favorite and Best Performance at the National Puppetry Festival\, funding from the Jim Henson Foundation\, and a UNIMA Citation for excellence in The Art of Puppetry\, the highest award given in the field. \nPerforming: Toybox Theater (45 min) \nShow Description: America’s favorite cartoon witch blends stand up comedy\, deft character acting\, and puppetry for one unique performance. SUMMARY:Lindy Tuesdays (Starts Sept. 10)
DESCRIPTION:Lindy Hop—was originally the energetic form of partnered swing dancing that began in Harlem in the late 1920s and continues to thrive today.  Lindy works well with big band or jazz and can be danced to slower music as well.  It takes a bit longer to get started as the basic is technically more difficult for both the Leader and the Follower\, but the result is worth it as this dance has many fun variations. \nLindy Charleston (to distinguish it from 20’s Charleston)- ever see people on the dance floor doing Charleston and want to dance like that? Learn Front and Tandem Charleston Variations and add them to your Lindy repertoire. \n\nLindy classes take place every Tuesday of the month\, unless otherwise noted. Beginner\, intermediate\, and advanced level courses start at 6:15pm\, 7:15pm\, and 8:15pm\, respectively. Students may sign up for a month’s worth of classes online\, or drop in for a single class by purchasing a ticket at the front desk for $13. \n  \nSeptember 10 – October 1\nLindy 1 a : 6:15-7:15pm (6-count focus)\nLindy 2: 7:15-8:15 (at least 3 months of Lindy required!)\nLindy 3: 8:15-9:15pm (at least 9 months of Lindy required and permission of instructor) \nFour 1-hour classes: $46 public\, Friends and college students with ID 15% discount; single class: $13 \n  \nLindy 1 (Beginner) \nLindy 1 classes introduce technique and vocabulary in three class sections: 6-count focus\, 8-count focus\, and Charleston focus. Each section is four weeks long. Together\, these three focus sections constitute the beginning syllabus for students who are new to Lindy Hop or wish to refine their basics. Students may start any of these sections from scratch with no previous knowledge of Lindy Hop or partner dancing. After completing all three sections (in any order)\, students may progress to Lindy 2. \nSection A (6-Count Focus) Tuesdays\, Sept. 10th-Oct. 1st\, 6:15-7:15pm \nSection B (8-Count Focus) Tuesdays\, Oct. 8th-Oct 29th\, 6:15-7:15pm \nSection C (Charleston Focus) Tuesdays\, Nov. 5th-Nov. 26th\, 6:15-7:15pm \nSection D (Bonus/Special Topic) Tuesdays\, Dec. 3rd-Dec. 10th\, 6:15-7:15pm \n  \nLindy 2 (Intermediate) \nIn Lindy 2\, students will learn to integrate the techniques and vocabulary covered in the Level 1 syllabus into comfortable and confident social dances\, be introduced to more classic Lindy Hop vocabulary and styling\, and continue to refine leading and following technique. \nPrerequisite: 3 sections of Lindy 1 (6-count\, 8-count\, and Charleston focus). \nTuesdays\, 7:15-8:15pm \n  \nLindy 3 (Advanced) \nIn Lindy 3\, we take a closer look at more subtle techniques for leading and following more complex movement patterns\, work on incorporating higher levels of musicality into the dance\, and apply a greater focus to personal movement\, rhythm and footwork. \nPrerequisite: 9 months of Lindy instruction and permission of the instructor. \nTuesdays\, 8:15-9:15pm \n  \n15% discount for month passes for members and UNC students. Single Classes must be purchased at the door and are not subject to the member discount. \nPlease include your class level in the comment section at checkout. \nAll ArtSchool Swing & Lindy month long registrations have a $2 processing fee added upon check-out. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:No Shame Theatre – Carrboro
DESCRIPTION:No Shame Theatre is an open performance venue for original and compelling works of theatre. \nPieces arrive up to an hour before show time.  They’re cast\, rehearsed\, and put on stage in front of a live audience an hour later. \nWriters\, directors\, actors\, dancers\, musicians — anything goes: Comedy sketches\, dramatic monologues\, songs\, dance pieces\, rants\, dadaist constructions\, magicians\, juggling\, puppets and things that we’re not even sure exist yet.The only rules are 1) pieces must be short (under five minutes)\, 2) original and 3) can’t damage the space or audience physically. \nNo Shame is a chance to experience 15 works of art that you’ve never seen before and may never see again.
