SUMMARY:UNC Process Series' Remembrance and Renewal Storytelling Festival (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Recognizing the power and potential of storytelling in its many forms at this pivotal moment in American culture and politics\, this 5-day festival draws on the skills of some of the nation’s most prominent and diverse storytelling practitioners. The Festival will feature both traditional and contemporary stories from nationally and locally known storytellers. The programming will focus on diverse voices\, all addressing these ideas: How can storytelling illuminate the world as it exists now? Can storytelling build community and create cultural and institutional change? What can a community do to invite a diversity of voices to share personal and cultural stories that have shaped the way they live and the way we understand others? Can storytelling be an effective platform to battle systemic racism? \nThe international\, national and local list of storyteller are an exciting collection of artists who are currently defining the art form: Andrew Ali Aghapour\, Charlotte Blake Alston\, Brenda Wong Aoki\, Milbre Burch\, Jasmin Cardenas\, Sam Gates\, Jaki Shelton Green\, Kaya Littleturtle\, Ashley Lumpkin\, Senora Lynch\, Daniel Reyes\, Carlos Robson\, Simon Tam\, Dovie Thomason and UNC student storytellers. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:The Spark with Tift Merritt: Flutronix
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the fourth episode of The Spark with Tift Merritt\, featuring Nathalie Joachim and Allison Loggins-Hull of Flutronix. In this livestreamed series\, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and UNC alumna Tift Merritt returns to Carolina Performing Arts to take us behind the scenes in artist-to-artist video interviews that delve deep into the creative process. \nOn December 17\, Tift will sit down with Nathalie Joachim and Allison Loggins-Hull of Flutronix\, ingenious composers\, musicians\, and vocalists whose original works for flute\, voice\, electronics\, and live drums feature their signature art pop sound. \nLongtime friends of Carolina Performing Arts\, Joachim and Loggins-Hull have been artists-in-residence at CPA since 2018. While in residence\, they are creating an emotionally resonant new work known as Discourse\, in which the voices and personal stories of Chapel Hill are brought to vibrant life. Discourse has grown into a community-centered social change initiative and is set to premiere in 2021 after the initial premiere was delayed due to precautions related to COVID-19. \nFree and open to the public; registration required. Registration for this event closes at 12 PM EST on December 17\, 2020. If you have questions or concerns related to accessibility\, please contact us. \nThis event is generously co-sponsored by Maribel Carrion and Alan Weinhouse. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:The Spark with Tift Merritt: Wynton Marsalis and Carlos Henriquez
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event closes at 12 PM EDT on November 19\, 2020. \nJoin us for the third episode of The Spark with Tift Merritt\, featuring Wynton Marsalis and Carlos Henriquez. In this livestreamed series\, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and UNC alumna Tift Merritt returns to Carolina Performing Arts to take us behind the scenes in artist-to-artist video interviews that delve deep into the creative process. \nOn November 19\, Tift will sit down with Wynton Marsalis\, internationally acclaimed musician\, composer\, and managing and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center\, and Carlos Henriquez\, bassist for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) and lecturer at the Northwestern University School of Music. \nMarsalis and the JLCO are no strangers to Chapel Hill. In the 06/07 season—CPA’s second season ever—they began a long tradition of performing on our stage. In this interview\, Merritt will take us “backstage” with Marsalis and Henriquez for a candid conversation about their work\, their lives\, and turning points in their work as artists\, with Jazz at Lincoln Center and beyond. \nMarsalis’s transformational work at Jazz at Lincoln Center began in 1987\, when he co-founded a jazz program at Lincoln Center\, which grew into  the acclaimed institution that today serves as an international destination for jazz and education. Henriquez’s history with JLCO is nearly as long: during his time as a student in the LaGuardia High School of Music & Arts and Performing Arts’ Concert Jazz Ensemble\, they won first place in the 1996 Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival. Just two years later\, Henriquez joined the Wynton Marsalis Septet and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:The Spark with Tift Merritt: Pedja Mužijević
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event closes at 12 PM EDT on October 22\, 2020. \nJoin us for the second episode of The Spark with Tift Merritt\, featuring pianist Pedja Mužijević. In this livestreamed video series\, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and UNC alumna Tift Merritt returns to Carolina Performing Arts to take us behind the scenes in artist-to-artist interviews that delve deep into the creative process. \nPedja Mužijević has defined his career with creative programming\, unusual combinations of new and old music\, and lasting collaborations with other artists and ensembles. Called “mesmerizing\,” “precise\,” and “enigmatic\,” Mužijević’s bold programming draws inspiration from his many creative pursuits. His performances at Carolina Performing Arts alone have included pieces for a prepared piano as well as an immersive\, intimate concert he curated and performed with the UNC Chamber Singers at CURRENT ArtSpace + Studio in fall 2018. Based on the series Merritt produced for the acclaimed Marfa\, Texas Public Radio\, The Spark peels back the polished performance to reveal the elbow grease\, risk\, fire\, and courage behind the art—and artists—we think we know. Each month\, Tift will welcome a new artist for a 45-minute livestreamed conversation that gets to the heart of their work\, followed by a 15-minute audience Q&A.
