SUMMARY:"That's Wild" Film Screening | Festival of Black and Independent Film (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The Diaspora Festival of Black and Independent Film is the Stone Center’s annual series spotlighting films from all corners of the African… More diaspora.\n\nThe 2021 festival is VIRTUAL. The films will be available for a 24 hour window starting at midnight\, on the date of the screening.\n\nRegistration required to received information on virtual screenings and invitations to ZOOM discussion events. Registration is free.\n\nREGISTER HERE: http://apps2.research.unc.edu/events/index.cfm?event=events.go&key=ADCD\nhttps://tinyurl.com/yzfgdvz3ABOUT\n“That’s Wild” (2020)\nDir.: Michiel Thomas | 63 min | Feature Documentary | USA \nGrowing up in Atlanta can be hard as highlighted by three real-life protagonists in That’s Wild. Sixteen-year-old Clifford tries to fill the void of his incarcerated father\, 13-year-old Ahmani struggles with the aftermath of a homeless childhood\, and 13-year-old Nicholas grapples with episodes of depression. When the boys sign up for the after-school program Wilderness Works\, they quickly begin to unpack the negative pressures that surround them in their day-to-day lives.CO-PROGRAMMING: These virtual screenings and the roundtable are co-sponsored by the Ackland Film Forum and the Department of English and Comparative Literature in celebration of the department’s 225th anniversary. \nTHE UNDRGROUND RAILROAD (Series | Amazon): Across his three feature films to date (Medicine for Melancholy\, Moonlight\, and If Beale Street Could Talk)\, Barry Jenkins has devised a new cinematic vocabulary for the portrayal of Black experience in the United States. With sumptuous imagery and hypnotic soundscapes\, Jenkins has embraced aesthetic beauty as a strategy for addressing the past and present injustices that bear on the lives of marginalized characters. His 2021 miniseries\, The Underground Railroad is adapted from Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name. A haunting\, atmospheric account of two runaway slaves in the Antebellum South\, the series is Jenkins’ most daring directorial work yet. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:UNC Process Series' Remembrance and Renewal Storytelling Festival (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Recognizing the power and potential of storytelling in its many forms at this pivotal moment in American culture and politics\, this 5-day festival draws on the skills of some of the nation’s most prominent and diverse storytelling practitioners. The Festival will feature both traditional and contemporary stories from nationally and locally known storytellers. The programming will focus on diverse voices\, all addressing these ideas: How can storytelling illuminate the world as it exists now? Can storytelling build community and create cultural and institutional change? What can a community do to invite a diversity of voices to share personal and cultural stories that have shaped the way they live and the way we understand others? Can storytelling be an effective platform to battle systemic racism? \nThe international\, national and local list of storyteller are an exciting collection of artists who are currently defining the art form: Andrew Ali Aghapour\, Charlotte Blake Alston\, Brenda Wong Aoki\, Milbre Burch\, Jasmin Cardenas\, Sam Gates\, Jaki Shelton Green\, Kaya Littleturtle\, Ashley Lumpkin\, Senora Lynch\, Daniel Reyes\, Carlos Robson\, Simon Tam\, Dovie Thomason and UNC student storytellers. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:The Spark with Tift Merritt: Flutronix
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the fourth episode of The Spark with Tift Merritt\, featuring Nathalie Joachim and Allison Loggins-Hull of Flutronix. In this livestreamed series\, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter and UNC alumna Tift Merritt returns to Carolina Performing Arts to take us behind the scenes in artist-to-artist video interviews that delve deep into the creative process. \nOn December 17\, Tift will sit down with Nathalie Joachim and Allison Loggins-Hull of Flutronix\, ingenious composers\, musicians\, and vocalists whose original works for flute\, voice\, electronics\, and live drums feature their signature art pop sound. \nLongtime friends of Carolina Performing Arts\, Joachim and Loggins-Hull have been artists-in-residence at CPA since 2018. While in residence\, they are creating an emotionally resonant new work known as Discourse\, in which the voices and personal stories of Chapel Hill are brought to vibrant life. Registration for this event closes at 12 PM EST on December 17\, 2020. If you have questions or concerns related to accessibility\, please contact us. \nThis event is generously co-sponsored by Maribel Carrion and Alan Weinhouse. \n\n\n	Related
