DESCRIPTION:“Under the looming threat of death\, how might we inspire life? Through what mechanisms could we resist the psychological violence and despair inspired by the threat of violence while at the same time usher in hope?” \nDO or DIE: Affect\, Ritual\, Resistance features the work of visual artist Fahamu Pecou\, who elevates and re-contextualizes Black life and death to inspire hope\, healing\, and a sense of justice. The exhibition seeks to reframe the political and societal violence against Black bodies in America by incorporating imagery from African-based spiritual traditions.  \nThis exhibition will be on display in the Robert and Sallie Brown Gallery and Museum from Sept. 19 through Nov. 21.  \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Black-Owned Bookstores: Their Struggle of
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 2019 Diaspora Lecture as we examine the pioneering role of Black bookstores\, an often-overlooked element in the story of Black community development and Black empowerment in the United States.  \nThe event will feature a presentation by Professor Joshua C. Davis whose recent book\, From Head Shops to Whole Foods:\nThe Rise and Fall of Activist Entrepreneurs (Columbia University Press\, 2017) includes a chapter entitled “Liberation Through Literacy: African American Bookstores\, Black Power\, and the Mainstreaming of Black Books”. Davis’ research included extensive review of FBI files and additional interviews with the owners of Black bookstores. His work\, featured in the Atlantic (“The FBI’s War on Black-Owned Bookstores”\, February 19\, 2018) concluded that there had been an organized campaign to undermine the key and central role of Black bookstores in community life. \nThere will be a panel discussion following Davis’s presentation featuring activist/author/scholar Michael Simanga and activist/author/lecturer Clarence Lusane. \nThe 2019 African Diaspora Lecture-Roundtable will take place in the Hitchcock Room of the Stone Center at 6:30 pm on Friday\, March 29. DESCRIPTION:The Stone Center will kick off its 30th anniversary with the opening of the exhibition With Us Comes the Parallax. This show will feature works by past Stone Center visiting artists\, dating back to 2004. The opening will also include talks by some of the participating artists\, including Toni Scott\, Arturo Lindsay\, Lucia Mendez\, Michael Platt\, Wendy Phillips\, and Stefanie Jackson. \nEach piece will also be auctioned off as part of the Stone Center’s 30th anniversary funding campaign.
