SUMMARY:Form Follows Function: Throwing with Purpose (Section A)
DESCRIPTION:Architect Louis Sullivan’s famous axiom “form follows function” meant that the purpose of a building should be the starting point for its design. Many potters would say the same is true for functional pottery. In this class we will concentrate on the function of wheel-thrown forms and how that purpose should inform the details of their design—i.e. how a drinking vessel tapers at the rim\, how a mug’s handle accommodates fingers\, and/or how a bowl contains a curved surface. Whatever your wheel-throwing goal\, this focus will improve your work. \nPrerequisite: at least one wheel-throwing class. \nMaterials: \nBasic wheel-throwing tool kit\, towels\, apron (optional) \n$20/bag of clay (beyond one bag included in course fee) \n  \nSection A) Molly Cronenwett – Mondays\, 9:30am-12pm\, Sept 9 – Oct 28 (not 9/16)\n  \nTuition includes one bag of clay and covers glazes and firing fees\, but not tools. Students may need to purchase a basic tool kit prior to the first class. \nYou can attend the Ceramics Open Studio during the duration of your class and up to two weeks after class ends. Go to this link for more information. \nAll ArtSchool registrations have a $3 processing fee added upon check-out. \nArtsCenter members receive 15% off of the cost of this course! \nAll ArtSchool classes are 15 years old and up unless otherwise specified. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Steve Forbert
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Cat’s Cradle \nBig City Cat: My Life in Folk Rock\, singer/songwriter Steve Forbert’s exceptional new memoir co-written with Therese Boyd\, allows him ample opportunity to candidly reflect on those specific circumstances that first brought him to the public eye. \nOriginally conceived as a stage play and screen treatment\, it finds him documenting his early adventures in the big city while pursuing his quest to make music. Sharing reflections and journals he kept at the time\, he weaves an absorbing narrative that fully documents the trials\, travails and triumphs that would eventually play out over the course of his prolific 40 year career. \nThe book is accompanied by its own soundtrack as well\, an A+ new album entitled The Magic Tree that offers a series of songs gleaned from previously recorded acoustic demos\, overdubbed with new backing tracks and fleshed out as a series of songs that ring with the verve and vitality that Forbert’s fans have always come to expect. Consistently upbeat and optimistic\, they convey a firm sense that age ought not diminish a lust for living. Then again\, that’s been Forbert’s mantra for quite some time\, honoring his past while plowing his way towards the future. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Richard Smith
DESCRIPTION:World-renowned fingerstyle guitarist Richard Smith makes his ArtsCenter debut! His repertoire includes original compositions\, gypsy swing\, Bach\, and Beatles\, not to mention classic fingerstyle guitar arrangements. Smith started playing guitar at age 5\, often getting a piece of music under his fingers after only a single hearing\, and developed a unique style combining thumbpicking and flatpicking. He has shared the stage with a virtual “who’s who“ of string wizardry\, including Joe Pass\, Les Paul\, Sam Bush\, and Béla Fleck. If you enjoyed Leo Kottke or Lulo Reinhardt\, this is a show you won’t want to miss! Expect fretboard fireworks as well as beautiful ballads during this intimate solo guitar performance. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:An Evening with Rissi Palmer with XOXOK
DESCRIPTION:Rissi Palmer\, who describes her musical style as “Southern Soul\,” has received widespread media attention in national publications including Ebony\, Parade\, People\, Newsweek\, Huffington Post\, Rolling Stone\, The Wall Street Journal and more. She has performed on the CBS Early Show\, CNN\, The Tavis Smiley Show\, Oprah & Friends\, at the White House\, Lincoln Center\, and the Grand Ole Opry. Rissi has also shared the stage with such notable artists as Charley Crockett\, Chris Young\, Taylor Swift and The Eagles\, to name a few. And\, on top of all that\, she made music history in 2007 with the release of her Top 40 debut single\, “Country Girl\,” becoming the first African-American woman to chart a country song since 1987. \nSince the release of her nationally distributed debut album\, Rissi has released two albums on her own indie label Baldilocks LLC\, including the children’s album Best Day Ever and her latest critically acclaimed EP\, The Back Porch Sessions. She is currently working on a new album scheduled for release in 2019. \nKeenan Jenkins’ musical career began during his Ph.D. studies at UNC-Chapel Hill\, where he played open mics and local showcases between long days on the third floor of the psychology building. By the time he’d finished his degree\, drained and discontent\, his musical moonlighting had meanwhile bloomed in full color. He took the cue and dove headfirst into the rich music scene in Carrboro\, NC. \nJenkins now performs as XOXOK\, crafting atmospheric soul music that is conceived on the fretboard\, cultivated at the microphone\, and cradled in headphones. The guitar and vocal influences are far-flung\, but cohesive—see Jeff Buckley\, Moses Sumney\, and Anna Calvi\, among others. His live performance is a model of intimacy and presence; armed with “sweet\, ringing vocals” (Queen City Nerve)\, XOXOK delivers impassioned songs with unabashed conviction. \nXOXOK’s debut EP Worthy is both a lush soundscape and an exercise in growth. On the opening track\, “Nancy\, M.D.”\, he declares\, “I need you / more than your patients will ever need you as their medic”. However\, by the final song (the title track\, “Worthy”)\, he has changed his tune: “I don’t need you to love me / I just want to be worthy”. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:An Evening with Bettye LaVette
DESCRIPTION:Bettye LaVette is no mere singer. She is an interpreter of the highest order. Whether the song originated as country\, rock\, pop\, or blues\, when she gets through with it\, it is pure R&B. She gets inside a song and shapes and twists it to convey all of the emotion that can be wrought from the lyric. To quote the late\, great George Jones: “Bettye is truly a ‘singer’s singer.’” \nOn these intimate shows\, Bettye is accompanied by her keyboard player\, Evan Mercer. She will be performing songs from throughout her 57 year career\, including songs that she used to perform in small Detroit clubs before her 21st Century resurgence began. Some of these songs she does not perform with her full band. \nHer career began in 1962\, at the age of 16\, in Detroit\, Michigan. Her first single “My Man – He’s a Loving Man”\, was released on Atlantic Records. She recorded for numerous major labels\, including Atco\, Epic\, and Motown\, over the course of the 1960s through the 1980s. \nThe 2000’s started what she calls her “Fifth Career”. Her CD\, A Woman Like Me\, won the W.C. Handy Award in 2004 for Comeback Blues Album of the Year. She was also given a prestigious Pioneer Award by The Rhythm & Blues Foundation. She has received Blues Music Awards for Best Contemporary Female Blues Singer and Best Soul Blues Female Artist. She recorded 4 CDs for hipster indie label ANTI- Records over the course of 8 years\, 2 of which received Grammy nominations. Her 2015 CD\, Worthy\, was also nominated for a Grammy. \nIn 2018 she released Things Have Changed\, an album of all Bob Dylan songs\, for Verve Records. It received two Grammy nominations\, one for Best Americana Album\, and one for the song “Don’t Fall Apart On Me Tonight” for Best Traditional R&B Performance. \nFans\, critics and artists have nothing but high praise for her live show and her vocal prowess. Now\, at 73 years old\, she is still performing with the ferocity of a woman half her age. She is one of very few of her contemporaries who were recording during the birth of soul music in the 1960s and is still creating vital recordings today. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Songs from the Circle 11
DESCRIPTION:The ArtsCenter’s annual Songs from the Circle shows are a celebration of the best in classic American Folk and Bluegrass. \nIn spring 2012 local guitarist Danny Gotham organized a memorable benefit concert involving a live presentation of songs from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s iconic album of 40 years prior\, Will the Circle Be Unbroken. Danny and his colleagues have made this a tradition at The ArtsCenter\, and Songs from the Circle returns for its 11th incarnation this year on June 14th. This event builds on the material of the album\, paying homage in a more general sense to the classics\, with an occasional original that stays in the spirit of classic country and bluegrass. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:The Singing OUT Tour 2019 with Crys Matthews and Heather Mae featuring JJ Jones and Joe Stevens.
DESCRIPTION:Ask anyone about the new generation of social justice music-makers and they’ll mention either Heather Mae or Crys Matthews. Mae\, a powerhouse performer and earthshaking vocalist\, has turned her personal struggle with mental health and body image into an empowering message of self-love\, a universal light force that shines for every audience member. Matthews is a powerful lyricist whose songs of compassionate dissent reflect her lived experience as what she lightheartedly calls “the poster-child for intersectionality”. These two singer-songwriters have joined forces with JJ Jones (Girlyman) and Joe Stevens (Coyote Grace) for The Singing OUT Tour. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Che Apalache
DESCRIPTION:Che Apalache is a four-man Latingrass band based in Buenos Aires with members from Argentina\, Mexico and the United States. Their style combines South American music and Bluegrass\, ranging from vivid Latin rhythms to a cappella mountain gospel songs sung in four part harmony. The group’s founder is Joe Troop (fiddle)\, a North Carolina-born multi-instrumentalist\, singer-songwriter and composer who moved to Argentina in 2010. While patiently carving out a niche in the local music scene\, Joe taught bluegrass and old-time music for a living. That’s how he met Pau Barjau (banjo)\, Franco Martino (guitar) and Martin Bobrik (mandolin)\, his most dedicated students. They quickly became picking buddies and in 2013 decided to form Che Apalache and hit the stage\, initially as a bluegrass band\, but eventually incorporating Latin American styles into their repertoire. Blending instrumental prowess with tight vocal harmonies\, they have created an authentic blend of genres to reflect the nature of their lives. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:William Fitzsimmons
DESCRIPTION:Singer-songwriter and music producer William Fitzsimmons’ latest record\, Mission Bell is a chronicling of the tumultuous last year of his life\, particularly of the separation from his second wife. An initial version of the album was originally recorded in Fitzsimmons’ home studio in the summer of 2017 but was subsequently abandoned during the course of\, and as a result of\, the separation. \nIn 2018 William traveled to Nashville\, TN to start recording the album over from square one. Working with producer Adam Landry (Deer Tick\, Los Lobos\, k.d. Lang\, Vanessa Carlton)\, Fitzsimmons spent a month’s time rebuilding the lost record\, with contributions from friends\, including Abby Gundersen and Rosie Thomas. The resulting 11-song album tells the story of a decade-long marriage destroyed and eventually rebuilt from the ground up. \nThe process and the results are both painful and healing\, but also respect the complexity of humans\, especially at their worst. This is not an exercise in “good-guy\, bad-guy” songwriting; rather an attempt to find empathy\, even when people are at their most depraved. Mission Bell includes songs about betrayal\, but also reconciliation and forgiveness. Choosing to go deeper than mere absolutism and fate\, these are stories of people doing their best\, but still managing to often destroy each other in the process. \n“Having to let go of the first version of this record was incredibly strange and something I’ve never done before. But it was the right thing to do. That record was made at a time when nearly all involved\, including myself\, were living dishonestly and selfishly and poorly\, and it was clear in the results. When I was forced to see the truth of how rotten things had become inside and around me\, I deleted every note and every word. My dear friend and manager\, Rishon\, connected me with producer Adam Landry\, and together the two of us spent weeks upon weeks breathing back life into a project that I thought was lost for good. By the time we finished\, I felt like I had reclaimed something that was taken from me and I remain terribly proud of this work as a result\,” says Fitzsimmons. \nSonically\, Mission Bell is Fitzsimmons’ first analog tape-centric album. The sounds are raw\, real\, and tangible. The familiar comforts of acoustic guitars are present but now joined generously by synthesizers\, electric guitars\, drum loops and violins. “Cutting to tape was new and honestly rather terrifying to me. There’s no “we’ll fix that in post” kind of shit going on. What you play is what you’re gonna hear on the record. But there’s a specialness you get in a performance when you don’t have a parachute. You either play it like it matters to you or you don’t and I think that comes through so clearly in the recordings.” \nOriginally from Pittsburgh\, PA\, Fitzsimmons currently resides in Nashville\, TN. \n\n\n	Related
