Silk painting is known to have therapeutic benefits for the mind. As the colors flow\, so will stress. Students will begin with the basics of silk painting & all the tools and materials you need to set up. We will explore a variety of techniques for working with dyes\, gutta resist and other additives to create different effects on the fabric. By the end of the workshop students will have gained the skills needed to create their own wearable art using this amazing\, timeless medium. \n\nI thoroughly enjoyed my time in Atula’s silk painting class. She was able to give me the confidence\, with clear and simple instructions\, to help me complete my beautiful project. Her class was fun and well organized. I highly recommend the experience. \n\n. \n\nAtula’s Silk Painting Class was super fun AND productive. Atula is very knowledgable and shares that knowledge with a generous helping of humor and unconditional encouragement. I really appreciated how she demonstrated the techniques first and then came around the class and guided us individually\, suggesting ways to improve or giving ideas as to what can be done but never in a way that cramped creativity. Being an artist herself\, she is sensitive to foster that in others. Making “mistakes” was seen as part of your creations uniqueness. Areas of focus will include\, composition\, color\, and painting in both the abstract and representational. No pre-requisites are required. \n. \nMinimum enrollment: 3 \n. \nMaximum enrollment: 8 \n. \nMaterials needed: \nSmall tackle box or something to contain your art supplies\, Water colors *tube set *pack of at least 10 or more\, at *minimum the primary colors plus black and white. Windsor & Newton brand (or comparable are great\, sold at Michael’s). Two to three water color brushes small round\, medium round\, large or medium flat. 1-2 Pads of water color paper 11×15 Strathmore is great\, a pad of disposable palette paper or a plastic palette for paint\, a container for water. A pencil for drawing. The in person workshops will be 3 hrs long and a model / human subject and concept to photograph will be provided. During the week there will be daily assignments that continue to teach the concepts learned in class and expand on the techniques. It is imperative for this workshop that you have access to children or adults so that you have subjects to photograph. \nEditing Tutorial on ZOOM – Mid Week – Wednesday Zoom – I will be doing a live editing demo using Adobe Lightroom. \nThere will be a Facebook Group to join as Art Center Live Participants so that you can easily communicate with me and the class. Group members can share images in a safe place and get encouraging feed back to help them grow as an artist.Photographers will experience an actual portrait session in each workshop. They will learn methods that allow them to explore their personal portrait voice. They will have more clarity on the kinds of images they want to create and how to plan and execute a portrait project. \n. \nMinimum enrollment: 4 \n. \nMaximum enrollment: 8 \n. \nMaterials needed: DSLR & Lenses. 50mm 1.8\, 85mm\, 35 mm or 24mm\, Lensbaby lens – 2 out of 5 would be great. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, Jun 12\, 9am – 4pm (In-person)\n  \nEmphasis will be on drawing the shadow and light shapes first\, then developing the form and adding highlights and darkening shadows. The instructor will supply photos to work from throughout the day\, or students can bring pre-approved photos of their own pets to practice with. In the first several painting sessions of the day\, students will practice the initial steps of a pet portrait\, and in the afternoon students will complete one pet portrait fully. \n  \nSupply List: \n\nTitanium White\nIvory Black\nCadmium Red Medium\nYellow Ochre\nUltramarine Blue (optional)\nCadmium Yellow Medium (optional)\nCerulean Blue (optional)\nArches brand Cold Pressed 140 lb. 12 Sheet Tape-Bound Oil Paper Pad 12×16 inches\nPaint Palette (any but I love the New Wave 12×16 glass palette with gray background)\nMasterson Palette Seal Box that fits your palette (optional but highly recommend)\nPaper Towels (blue “shop” towels are great – find them at hardware stores)\nPalette knife or single edge blade to scrape palette\nArtist Tape\nTwo empty jars with lids (Instructor will provide Gamsol and Linseed Oil)\nBrushes: Student choice\, but Instructor favorites are small brights or flats (4\,6\,8) … (favorite brand Trekell Golden Taklon) and one larger brush for initial wash/background/large shapes\n\n  \nAbout the Instructor: \nChristy is known for both her representational oil paintings and whimsical cut paper collages.  She finds inspiration in North Carolina nature\, when drawing and painting from life\, and through the process of painting itself which provides a constant opportunity for learning and new experiences.  Now in Chapel Hill\, Christy grew up in eastern North Carolina and has also lived in DC and Nashville.  She is an art educator with experience designing curriculum and teaching at Montessori schools and art museums including the National Portrait Gallery and Frist Art Museum.  She majored in studio art and elementary education at UNC Chapel Hill and also has a master of education from Vanderbilt University.  Her art is represented by Well+Wonder\, Serena & Lily\, and G. SUMMARY:Beginning Film Photography: Black and White
DESCRIPTION:Bielawski – Sundays\, May 9-30\, 1-2:30 pm (In-person)\n  \nIn this four-session course\, we will learn to operate a film camera and to expose film properly for light with shutter speed and F-stop. We will focus on composition techniques and study the work of other important photographers including Walker Evans\, Sally Mann\, Henri Cartier-Bresson\, Robert Frank\, and An-My Lê among others. This is a composition class\, not a darkroom one! Negatives will be developed and printed outside of class so that we can focus on developing the photographic eye. Prior experience with film photography is welcomed\, but not at all required. \n  \nAbout the Instructor: \nMorgan Bielawski is a writer and photographer from Northern California. She honed her photography skills at Bard College in Upstate N.Y. with professors Stephen Shore and An-My Lê; there she developed a passionate interest in film photography. Morgan writes primarily short stories and nonfiction; her work has been published in The Documentarian\, Lux\, and Sui Generis. She also translates stories and poems from Russian and Middle English to (Modern) English. Morgan has a BA in Written Arts\, and two academic concentrations: one in film photography\, and another in Russian. In her spare time\, Morgan plays and records American folk music and looks after her two fish. \n  \nMaterials \n– A 35mm film camera with a lens (fixed focal length of 50mm or 28mm is best\, but variable lenses are welcome too) \n– Ilford xP2 400 speed black and white film (1 roll of 36 frames required\, more are encouraged!) You can buy film here. \n– A light meter if your camera does not have one built in. \n  \nFees \n– Development and printing fee: $25 per rolls of film.
