SUMMARY:Upcoming Classic Film: Chaplin's "City Lights"
DESCRIPTION:The HILLSBOROUGH CLASSIC FILM SOCIETY’s holiday movie this year will be Charlie Chaplin’s “City Lights:” Sunday\, December 7th\, at 2pm. Please notice the location: this month only\, the film will be shown at the ORANGE COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY on West Margaret Lane in Hillsborough.\nChaplin made the film in 1931\, resisting the advent of sound just after talkies began to appear. In the essay that accompanied the Criterion restoration of the film\, Gary Giddins called it “an indelible masterwork of cinema\,” and noted that now\, nearly a century after its release\, it seems safe to call it a masterwork of Western civilization as well:\n“City Lights … represents both a beginning\, in that it has been endlessly imitated\, and an end\, in that it has never been superseded. … Chaplin’s new art was a form of storytelling combining burlesque comedy and dreadful pathos\, each tuned to a pitch so high that the audience is jolted from one physical response to another: laughter and tears\, the two faces of Comedy and–not Tragedy but rather–the melodramatic concession of Pathos …. Familiar territory today\, but … no one had brought it off before\, and Chaplin–the orphaned music hall clown who became\, through movies\, the most popular comedian the world has ever known–defied his partners warnings that his ambition would cost him his audience.”\nIt didn’t cost him his audience\, of course. Chaplin\, “the orphaned music hall clown\,” became\, through movies\, “the most popular comedian the world has ever known.”\nFrancesca Talenti will introduce the film and lead the discussion afterwards. Francesca is a Professor Emerita of Media Production at UNC-Chapel Hill. She is a filmmaker and animator\, a director and a media designer who has exhibited her work from The Folger and the Guthrie (design\, Hamlet\, Pericles)\, to Sundance\, to PBS National\, by way of Mumbai\, Göteborg\, Casablanca\, and many others. She has won 18 awards and has received numerous grants. She’s led the discussion for us on Vertigo (2019); Top Hat (2022); The Searchers (2023) ; West Side Story (2024); and a Christmas program of Chaplin films back in our second year of operation\, 2019.\nAs always\, the film is open to the public and free\, and the popcorn is free too. If you would like to attend\, please sign up by going to our website\,\nwww.hillsboroughclassicfilms.com\,\nscrolling down to the line “PLEASE REGISTER HERE\,” and clicking on the link.\nAnd\, once again\, please don’t confuse the location: this month only the film will be shown in the Orange County Public Library\, 137 West Margaret Lane in Hillsborough. (A note for those who are helped by the presence of subtitles: Since this is taking place in the Library Meeting Room subtitles would be difficult or impossible to see; luckily this is\, by and large\, a silent film.) \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:“Folk Art in the Library”
DESCRIPTION:The owners and artists of Mike’s Art Truck are happy to return to the Orange County Main Public Library in Hillsborough with a new collection of self-taught art featuring work by three popular folk artists: Ruby C. Williams\, Michael Banks\, and Sam Ezell. \nRoadside paintings by Ruby C. Williams like those in the exhibit once lured passers-by to her produce stand outside Plant City\, FL\, where she continues to farm. Her eye-catching images and misspelled messages have brought her considerable fame as an artist. They include “Watermelon Seller” a painting that was featured in a Smithsonian exhibition. Artist Michael Banks from Guntersville\, AL\, has an intense artistic drive that keeps him painting at a feverish pace. His distinctive images bend the boundaries of traditional folk art and dramatically fill one exhibit wall. Hillsborough’s own Sam Ezell started painting as a promise to a friend. Surprised how much he enjoyed making art\, and how much others enjoyed seeing his creations\, he has found no reason to stop. Samples of his happy artwork bring smiles to all. \nLongtime collectors of “outsider art” & friends of many artists\, Greg and Karen Mack founded Mike’s Art Truck to promote and sell the work of self-taught living artists. Mike’s Art Truck has no physical gallery location. Instead\, artwork is shown through cooperation with other businesses and public spaces\, and is displayed and sold online. The “truck” is only an imaginary one – driven by their cat Mike. Since moving to Hillsborough in 2012\, Mike’s Art Truck has curated folk art shows for the Orange County Public Library\, the Chapel Hill Public Library\, the Hillsborough Visitors Center\, the Whitted Building\,\nthe Orange County Historical Museum\, and the Hillsborough Campus of Durham Technical Community College. \nExhibition artwork is available for purchase directly through Mike’s Art Truck and can be picked up after the conclusion of the show. Contact Mike’s Art Truck for information by email at mikesarttruck@centurylink.net\, or visit their website www.mikesarttruck.com. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Writing About Home: A Poetry Workshop led by Pam Baggett
DESCRIPTION:Where is home? What do you love about it? What if you had to leave your home and move to another country? In this generative workshop\, we’ll write about homes we love\, past or present\, then turn our attention to the theme of immigration\, exploring the work of poets who write about what it’s like to lose a home due to violence\, poverty\, or the desire for better lives for their children. Through a series of prompts\, we’ll imagine what our lives would be like if forced to leave our own beloved homes. The workshop is free and open to the public; writers working at all levels and in other genres are welcome. Please register on-line at https://bit.ly/ocplwriting or at 919-245-2536. SUMMARY:Lee Smith & Nancy Peacock: The Importance of Mentorship
DESCRIPTION:In 1993 Nancy Peacock (Life Without Water\, A Broom of One’s Own\, The Life and Times of Persimmon Wilson) was struggling to write her first novel. She was not enrolled in a university or a writing class\, and with the exception of a smattering of friends who were also trying to figure out how to write their first novels\, was alone with the effort. She reached out to Lee Smith (Dimestore\, Guests on Earth\, Fair and Tender Ladies)\, from whom she’d taken a writing class years earlier. \nSmith suggested the young writer send her each chapter of the novel as she completed it\, and over a course of a year Nancy did just that\, mailing a first draft chapter roughly every month to her\, and building a relationship of mentorship that resulted in not only the completion of that novel\, but its publication in 1996\, and its selection is a New York Times Notable Book. Since then Peacock has gone on to write and publish two more novels and a memoir\, and has mentored other beginning writers. \nLocal authors Nancy Peacock and Lee Smith will host a public discussion on the importance of mentorship May 1\, 2018\, from 6:30 to 7:30 at the Orange County Library\, located at 137 W. Margaret Lane in Hillsborough. The event is free and open to the public. \nThis event is presented by the Piedmont Laureate program\, an initiative of the Orange County Arts Commission\, City of Raleigh Arts Commission\, Durham Arts Council\, and the United Arts Council of Raleigh & Wake County. The Piedmont Laureate program’s mission is to promote awareness and heighten appreciation for excellence in the literary arts throughout the Piedmont region.
