SUMMARY:Basic Hand-Building (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, Sept 13th\, 1pm-4pm\n  \nThis class will cover the basics of handbuilding: How to stick two pieces of clay together so they won’t fall apart or crack afterwards! We will also cover decorating and glazing techniques to familiarize students with the entire process. \n  \nI will demonstrate simple form construction as well as additions such as handles and lids. Students are welcome to simply watch the class or make work as their workspace allows while the session is live.\n  \nThis class will be a 3 hour class held online through Zoom. There will be time for questions throughout the class and at the end.\n\nEnrolled students will be given directions for clay pickup\, completed work drop off for firing\, glazing\, and final work pick up after firing that follow current health guidelines. \n  \nMaterials required:\nclay\nclay tools (can also just use fork\, butter knife\, old credit card)\nrolling pin or soup can for flattening clay\ncomputer with video and sound capacities\n\nOtterness – Sunday\, Sept 13th\, 1pm-4pm (TACOL 2020)\n  \nAbout the instructor: Nina Otterness graduated in 2012 from UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in Studio Art and a concentration in ceramics. After graduation she was a research collaborator with Professor Nam at UNC Chapel Hill for 2 years. She has been teaching at the Carborro Arts Center since 2014. She currently live in Mebane with her husband and two young boys as well as 11 geese and 7 ducks. She is currently working on expanding her knowledge of surface decoration techniques as well as combining her love of the natural world with her ceramic design. \n  \nThis class is conducted online! And it’s up to him to give THE TALK. A virtuosic one-man show about the difficult conversation a father must have with his son in a racially-divided America. \nMany white Americans didn’t know “the talk” existed until Eric Holder mentioned it in a 2013 NAACP speech. The then-Attorney General talked about sitting his own fifteen-year-old son down\, after the death of Trayvon Martin\, for a conversation that would increase his odds of survival if he were ever stopped by the police. “This was a father-son tradition I hoped would not need to be handed down\,” Holder said. “But as a father who loves his son and who is more knowing in the ways of the world\, I had to do this to protect my boy.” In Sonny Kelly’s new one-person show\, a co-production of Bulldog Ensemble Theater and StreetSigns Center for Literature and Performance\, the playwright\, performer\, and dad finds that the information his son needs to survive has radically expanded. It includes the historical\, cultural\, theoretical\, and autobiographical contexts that ground the identity of a person who might otherwise be reduced to a screen on which prejudices\, fears\, and hatreds are projected. After a three-week run at The Fruit in January 2019\, the show closed with a week at Historic Playmakers Theatre in Chapel Hill. \nDr. Sonny Kelly is a master of storytelling\, acting\, Shakespeare\, theater arts\, poetry\, spoken word\, group facilitation\, interpersonal communication\, performance studies\, training and teaching. DESCRIPTION:Students will learn basic drawing techniques as they create observational drawings. Students will build on their ability to identify contour lines of an object then add value to create a realistic drawing using shading techniques including highlights and shadows. SUMMARY:Self-Care Through Mandalas (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Potter – Saturday\, Feb 6th\, 1pm-3:30pm (Online)\n  \nDevelop self-awareness and infuse your creative practice with spirituality through the art of the mandala! \n“Mandala” is a Sanskrit word that literally translates to “container of essence” (manda—“essence”—and la—“container”). In ancient Hindu and Buddhist religious traditions\, mandalas were vessels for meditation and would be burned after being created to emphasize detachment. (Don’t worry\, we’re not going to burn our artwork\, although you’re welcome to if you’d like to really let go!) They’ve been reintroduced to the modern world thanks to Carl Jung\, who claimed mandalas were a map of one’s interior world. Art therapists today use mandalas to aide in reducing anxiety and depression\, since the repetition of lines and shapes can be soothing and help take your mind off your worries. \nIn this class\, you’ll learn varied approaches to making mandalas and will experiment until you find a style and process that works for you. You’ll come away with an appreciation for the rich spiritual tradition of mandala-making and have learned more about yourself through the art of the mandala! \n\n  \nAbout the instructor: \nCourtney Potter has worked as a professional painter\, photographer\, and art educator for the last decade. A Durham-based artist with regular sales and exhibitions\, Courtney is passionate about helping kids and adults alike tap into their creativity. Paint\, draw\, write\, glue and doodle with no rules.  Book pages with text and images give you something to respond to instead of a blank page and that can be creatively freeing. Build backgrounds\, add textures\, layer transparent materials\, collage papers\, incorporate text\, drip paint\, explore stencils\, and more. All you need is an old book\, acrylic paint materials\, glue stick\, matte medium\, and any materials you have that can be glued\, stenciled or added to a book page. I will share some of my favorite mixed media techniques to help you get started or continue on your journaling path. \n\nThis class is conducted online!
