SUMMARY:Virtual Illustration: Posters & Protest Signs (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays\, Sept 16th-Sept 30th\, 6:30-9pm\n  \nOur world is changing at record-breaking speed – we are making history\, right & left! But left to the news media\, the story is likely to be reduced to colorless sound bites. In class\, you’ll get to chronicle your own rich\, personal history/her-story for posterity – visually! \nClass will cover techniques to help you sort out your thoughts & feelings\, and turn your passionate opinions into strong visual statements. \nPosters – are typically advertisements. But here\, the ad is about something you feel strongly about. The idea is to help create community – at a safe distance – by hanging your printed posters all around town\, for passers-by to experience. Your poster becomes a substitute for face-to-face interaction. \nProtest signs – are self explanatory. The goal is to create an image & words that make a strong statement that reflects the student’s beliefs. \nThis is not a drawing class\, but basic drawing skills are all you need. Each student will get individual guidance (using Zoom’s break out rooms). Artwork will be shared via Google Photos. We’ll have on-camera demos and group critiques in each class. \n  \nSYLLABUS for 3-week Poster/Protest Sign class: \nStudents will pick a topic that interests them or affects them personally\, and create an illustration that reflects their own perceptions\, opinions\, & feelings. \nWeeks 1 & 2: Concepts & rough sketches \nStudents choose either a poster or protest sign. Making many rough sketches will help students to formulate and clarify ideas / concepts. So will discussion & critique. Students will work “in class” and at home on their illustration. There will be individual guidance offered in Zoom “Break-out” rooms. \nWeek 3: Gestalt / Group Critique \nStudents will “bring in” their finished illustration for group critique & discussion. There may also be time for polishing up their final work & individual guidance. \n  \nMATERIALS: \n1st week – Thumbnail Sketches \nPencils \nCheap office paper 8.5 x 11”; or sketchbook 9 x 12” or similar size\, for sketches \nKneaded eraser\, if you have it. Or any other kind will do. \nAdd for 2nd week – Roughs \nTracing paper; 9 x 12” minimum\, 11 x 17” is ideal ** \n** 11 x 17” Paper (or thereabouts) for Posters; 18” x 24” for Protest signs \nDrawing &/or painting medium(s) of your choice. Choose a medium you are already familiar with.* \nIf you’re using paint\, you may need thicker paper. 80# sketchbook paper is fine. \n** For Final Illustration – Poster: 80# paper or illustration board; either 12” x 18” or similar size. (Your paper depends on the medium(s) you’ll use. You can wait & get this after class starts.) * \nFor Final Illustration – Protest Sign: \nCorrugated cardboard (cut from a box is fine)\, 18 x 24” or similar size* \nHouse paint (preferably acrylic / latex)\, at least 2 high-contrasting colors (ex: black & white) \nHouse Paint brushes (1” & 3” or 4”) \nYou may also want a stick to attach to the back (Big paint stirrer sticks work well.) \n*Artwork could be done on computer instead. (as long as you know how to do it!). \nProtest posters could conceivably be printed on canvas or vinyl… but it can be costly. \n** Order paper from Dick Blick if you like: https://www.dickblick.com/items/10209-1079/ \n  \n  \nAbout the instructor: \nStacye Leanza is a professional muralist & illustrator\, with a BFA from Parsons School of Design in NYC. Her cartoons for kids have been published locally and her editorial illustrations nationally. Her murals are scattered around the Triangle; she has the distinction of having painted the largest mural in Chatham County. She has taught drawing and art to grown-ups and kids\, privately and in classes and workshops in both instructional and therapeutic settings. Her focus in the drawing class is on learning how to see\, by accessing the creative\, perceptive Right Brain. The immediate result is the ability to draw more realistically. Visit her Facebook page at “Leanza-art\, etc.\,” or her website: www.leanza-art.com. \n  \nThis class is conducted online! A computer with audio\, video\, and internet functionality is required. Student gives permission for The ArtsCenter and for instructor to use their image and comments in class recordings for promotional non-commercial purposes. Refunds and exchanges are not offered for online classes. \nAll ArtSchool registrations have a $3 processing fee added upon check-out. \n\nArtsCenter members receive 15% off of the cost of this course! \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Virtual Illustration: Op Ed/Editorial (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Leanza – Wednesdays\, Oct 14th – Oct 28th\, 6:30pm-9pm\n  \nOur world is changing at record-breaking speed – we are making history\, right & left. But left to the news media\, the story is likely to be reduced to colorless sound bites. In class\, you’ll get to chronicle your own rich\, personal history/her-story for posterity – visually! \nTechniques will be offered to help you sort out your thoughts & feelings\, and turn your passionate opinions into strong visual statements. \nOK\, so what is “Op-Ed”\, anyway?“An op-ed article is …[one] in which the author states their opinion about a given topic\, often with a view to persuade the reader of their way of thinking…” – Benjamin Spall \nThe job of an op-ed illustration\, then\, is to capture the crux of the opinion\, (in this case\, yours). \nThis is not a drawing class\, but basic drawing skills are all you need. Each student will get individual guidance (using Zoom’s break out rooms). Artwork will be shared via Google Photos. We’ll have on-camera demos and group critiques in each class. \nStudents will pick a topic that interests them or affects them personally\, and create an illustration that reflects their own perceptions\, opinions\, & feelings. \nWeeks 1 & 2: Concepts & rough sketchesMaking many rough sketches will help students to formulate and clarify ideas / concepts. So will discussion & critique. Students will work “in class” and at home on their illustration. There will be individual guidance offered in Zoom “Break-out” rooms. \nWeek 3: Gestalt / Group CritiqueStudents will “bring in” their finished illustration(s) for group critique & discussion. There may also be time for polishing up their final work & individual guidance. \n  \nMATERIALS: \n1st week -Thumbnail Sketches – Pencils Cheap office paper 8.5 x 11”; or sketchbook 9 x 12” or similar size\, for sketches Kneaded eraser\, if you have it. Or any other kind will do. \n\nAdd for 2nd week – Roughs – Tracing paper; 9 x 12” minimum **Drawing &/or painting medium(s) of your choice. Choose a medium you are already familiar with. *If you’re using paint\, you may need thicker paper. 80# sketchbook paper is fine.** \nFor Final Illustration: 80# paper or illustration board; either 9 x 12” or similar size. (Your paper depends on the medium(s) you’ll use. You can wait & get this after class starts.) **Artwork could be done on computer instead. (as long as you know how to do it!).** \n** Order paper from Dick Blick if you like: https://www.dickblick.com/items/10209-1079/ \n  \nAbout the instructor: \nStacye Leanza is a professional muralist & illustrator\, with a BFA from Parsons School of Design in NYC. SUMMARY:Sonny Kelly is calling you to The Talk
DESCRIPTION:PLAYMAKERS REPERTORY COMPANY IS PARTNERING TO SHARE THIS ARCHIVAL RECORDING OF THE BULLDOG ENSEMBLE THEATER & STREETSIGNS CO-PRODUCTION \nWRITTEN & PERFORMED BY SONNY KELLY\nDIRECTED BY JOSEPH MEGEL \nIn Sonny Kelly’s one-person show\, the playwright\, performer\, and dad finds that the information his son needs to survive has radically expanded. And it’s up to him to give THE TALK. A virtuosic one-man show about the difficult conversation a father must have with his son in a racially-divided America. \nMany white Americans didn’t know “the talk” existed until Eric Holder mentioned it in a 2013 NAACP speech. The then-Attorney General talked about sitting his own fifteen-year-old son down\, after the death of Trayvon Martin\, for a conversation that would increase his odds of survival if he were ever stopped by the police. “This was a father-son tradition I hoped would not need to be handed down\,” Holder said. “But as a father who loves his son and who is more knowing in the ways of the world\, I had to do this to protect my boy.” In Sonny Kelly’s new one-person show\, a co-production of Bulldog Ensemble Theater and StreetSigns Center for Literature and Performance\, the playwright\, performer\, and dad finds that the information his son needs to survive has radically expanded. It includes the historical\, cultural\, theoretical\, and autobiographical contexts that ground the identity of a person who might otherwise be reduced to a screen on which prejudices\, fears\, and hatreds are projected. After a three-week run at The Fruit in January 2019\, the show closed with a week at Historic Playmakers Theatre in Chapel Hill. \nDr. Sonny Kelly is a master of storytelling\, acting\, Shakespeare\, theater arts\, poetry\, spoken word\, group facilitation\, interpersonal communication\, performance studies\, training and teaching. He captures the attention and imaginations of audiences of all ages with the power of words. Whether he is speaking English or Spanish\, this artist knows how to use humor\, energy\, drama and intellect to engage all crowds\, both large and small. With over 20 years of experience as a professional actor\, over a decade of youth work\, and a Master’s Degree in Communication Studies\, this artist knows the smart way to tap into the minds of students and workers of all ages. \n\n\n	Related

The instructor will also discuss different ways to acquire tools and supplies and how to save money. \n  \nSection D (Austin) – Mon & Wed\, 6/29 & 7/1\, 9am – 12pm (TACOL Spring 2020)\n  \nAbout Jen Austin: Read our interview with Jen Austin here! \n  \nThis class is conducted online! SUMMARY:Self-Care Through Mandalas (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Potter – Saturday\, Feb 6th\, 1pm-3:30pm (Online)\n  \nDevelop self-awareness and infuse your creative practice with spirituality through the art of the mandala! \n“Mandala” is a Sanskrit word that literally translates to “container of essence” (manda—“essence”—and la—“container”). In ancient Hindu and Buddhist religious traditions\, mandalas were vessels for meditation and would be burned after being created to emphasize detachment. (Don’t worry\, we’re not going to burn our artwork\, although you’re welcome to if you’d like to really let go!) They’ve been reintroduced to the modern world thanks to Carl Jung\, who claimed mandalas were a map of one’s interior world. Art therapists today use mandalas to aide in reducing anxiety and depression\, since the repetition of lines and shapes can be soothing and help take your mind off your worries. \nIn this class\, you’ll learn varied approaches to making mandalas and will experiment until you find a style and process that works for you. You’ll come away with an appreciation for the rich spiritual tradition of mandala-making and have learned more about yourself through the art of the mandala! \n\n  \nAbout the instructor: \nCourtney Potter has worked as a professional painter\, photographer\, and art educator for the last decade. A Durham-based artist with regular sales and exhibitions\, Courtney is passionate about helping kids and adults alike tap into their creativity. In addition to being the middle school art teacher at Durham Nativity School\, Courtney teaching fluid painting & photography courses to kids and adults throughout the Triangle. When not busy making paintings\, photographing beautiful souls\, or teaching art\, you’ll probably find Courtney rock-climbing\, dancing\, reading\, or snuggling her 2 kitties Calypso and Thorn. \n  \nThis class is conducted online! A computer with audio\, video\, and internet functionality is required. Student gives permission for The ArtsCenter and for instructor to use their image and comments in class recordings for promotional non-commercial purposes. Refunds and exchanges are not offered for online classes. \n  \nAll ArtSchool registrations have a $3 processing fee added upon check-out. \n\nArtsCenter members receive 15% off of the cost of this course! \n  \nMaterials List for Mandala Workshop\nBelow is my recommended arsenal of materials for making mandalas. However\, you absolutely do NOT have to buy all these items online. I’m a big fan of using what you have to make art–after all\, resourcefulness is just creativity in action! For each art supply below\, I’ve listed alternate DIY supplies you can utilize for this class.\n  \n\nCompass/Protractor\n\nIf you can’t find your trusty protractor from high school geometry\, finding a variety of circular-shaped items at home will work just fine! Mixing bowls\, plant pots\, glasses\, spice jar lids\, and circular earrings are a few of my favorite items to trace!\n\n\nPencil and Eraser\n\nYour kid’s no. 2 pencils from elementary school will work just fine!\n\n\nRuler\n\nAny straight\, hard-edged item\, like a thick piece of paper\, will do.\n\n\nTemplates/Stencils (for tracing shapes)\n\nThis circle templateis good\, but if you find one with other shapes bring that!\n\n\nMixed Media Sketchbook (11×14)\n\nIf you don’t have access to a sketchbook\, mixed media\, or watercolor paper\, then standard computer paper will work fine. You just won’t be able to load it up with too much paint!)\n\n\nMarkers\n\nI like these 2 artist brands best: Copic Sketch Markers and Chartpak Art Markers\, which are blendable. But if all you have are Crayola markers that’s fine too! Just aim for a mix of fine point markers and thick markers.\n\n\nColored Pencils\nWatercolor Paint\n\n$5 sets are perfectly fine! I regularly use this Artists Loft Necessities Pan Set from Michael’s for my Mandalas!)\n\n\nWatercolor Brushes (small\, round-tip for detail work)\nMicron Pens\n\nI recommend #001\, #05\, #08\, and a Brush-tip. Fine point Sharpies and Regular Sharpies also work.\n\n\n1-2 sheets of 22×30 140lb cold-press watercolor paperforfinal project if you’d like to go BIG with your mandalas!\nAny other art supplies you’d like to bring! \n\nPaint pens\, acrylic inks\, stamps\, etc. The sky’s the limit!\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n	Related
