DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year again! The traditional Holiday Circle Show (now in its 14th iteration) is coming around again like a Lucky Penny\, Friday\, December 18th\, at The ArtsCenter. We’ll be live-streaming this year’s show from The ArtsCenter’s Wynn Theatre. \nThe Circle show has been going strong for 14 shows about about 8 years now. Conceived by Danny Gotham\, the Circle shows are based on the “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” albums. The troupe added a holiday show each year and now holds two annual Circle shows. The Holiday show highlights songs that are guaranteed to put you in the holiday spirit and there is always plethora of local and national musicians to keep the event 200% entertaining. The usual suspects include Rebecca Newton\, Barry Gray\, FJ Ventre\, David Burney and many more\, with some special guests sprinkled in. It’s an ArtsCenter tradition and a mighty fine one at that! \nSpecial guests include Joseph Terrell of Mipso\, Jeffrey Dean Foster\, and Martha Bassett as emcee. SUMMARY:Painting the Light – Landscape in Dramatic Lighting (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Hamburger – Saturday\, October 17th\, 2pm-5pm (EST time zone)\n  \nDuring this virtual one-day intensive workshop\, students will learn to capture light in their landscape paintings. Students will work from their own photographs of the landscape in dramatic lighting situations (sunsets\, sunrises\, or that magic hour) to create their own tonalist interpretations. The workshop will include a discussion of examples of masterworks from throughout art history\, guided demonstrations\, student working periods\, and critiques. There will be time throughout to ask plenty of questions. We will cover composition\, underpainting\, color\, and value to create rich\, high-contrast paintings that evoke an emotional response to place. Some painting experience is helpful. Oil or acrylic paints are welcome\, but demonstrations will be in acrylics. \n\nMaterials:\n\n\nReference Photos – Images that you have personally taken are preferred. Sunsets/sunrises\, where things in the foreground are silhouetted are great. Think high contrast. The more the better\, preferably printed. The photos do not need to be of high quality.\nPaints – I recommend Golden Acrylics or Gamblin Oils\, but up to you. 37ml or larger. Below are suggested colors\, but many variations can work.\n\nblack\ntitanium white\nraw umber\nburnt umber\nyellow ochre\ncad yellow light\ncad red medium\nultramarine blue\nprussian blue\n\n\nSurface – Around 11x14in. Up to you whether to use a stretched canvas or panel. We’ll learn the fundamental skills of digital photography\, such as composition\, lighting\, exposure\, and focusing. Then\, using a free online photo editing program\, we’ll explore how to edit and transform our photos using techniques like distortion\, cropping\, cutting and pasting\, altering colors and more. They can all be sculpted out of paper\, paper mache paste\, and tagboard. SUMMARY:Virtual Illustration: Posters & Protest Signs (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Wednesdays\, Sept 16th-Sept 30th\, 6:30-9pm\n  \nOur world is changing at record-breaking speed – we are making history\, right & left! But left to the news media\, the story is likely to be reduced to colorless sound bites. In class\, you’ll get to chronicle your own rich\, personal history/her-story for posterity – visually! \nClass will cover techniques to help you sort out your thoughts & feelings\, and turn your passionate opinions into strong visual statements. \nPosters – are typically advertisements. But here\, the ad is about something you feel strongly about. The idea is to help create community – at a safe distance – by hanging your printed posters all around town\, for passers-by to experience. Your poster becomes a substitute for face-to-face interaction. \nProtest signs – are self explanatory. The goal is to create an image & words that make a strong statement that reflects the student’s beliefs. \nThis is not a drawing class\, but basic drawing skills are all you need. Each student will get individual guidance (using Zoom’s break out rooms). Artwork will be shared via Google Photos. We’ll have on-camera demos and group critiques in each class. \n  \nSYLLABUS for 3-week Poster/Protest Sign class: \nStudents will pick a topic that interests them or affects them personally\, and create an illustration that reflects their own perceptions\, opinions\, & feelings. \nWeeks 1 & 2: Concepts & rough sketches \nStudents choose either a poster or protest sign. But left to the news media\, the story is likely to be reduced to colorless sound bites. In class\, you’ll get to chronicle your own rich\, personal history/her-story for posterity – visually! \nTechniques will be offered to help you sort out your thoughts & feelings\, and turn your passionate opinions into strong visual statements. \nOK\, so what is “Op-Ed”\, anyway?“An op-ed article is …[one] in which the author states their opinion about a given topic\, often with a view to persuade the reader of their way of thinking…” – Benjamin Spall \nThe job of an op-ed illustration\, then\, is to capture the crux of the opinion\, (in this case\, yours). \nThis is not a drawing class\, but basic drawing skills are all you need. Each student will get individual guidance (using Zoom’s break out rooms). Artwork will be shared via Google Photos. We’ll have on-camera demos and group critiques in each class. \nStudents will pick a topic that interests them or affects them personally\, and create an illustration that reflects their own perceptions\, opinions\, & feelings. \nWeeks 1 & 2: Concepts & rough sketchesMaking many rough sketches will help students to formulate and clarify ideas / concepts. So will discussion & critique. Students will work “in class” and at home on their illustration. SUMMARY:Clay Stamp and Texture (Online)
DESCRIPTION:This class will cover how to add surface texture to greenware using a variety of means. We will discuss textures that can be found around the home and yard and I will collect a variety of them so students can see what kind of interesting textures they can make. I will also demonstrate how to make small clay stamps and small texture rollers that students will be able to personalize and use for many projects.\n\nStudents are welcome to simply watch the class or roll out their own slab and experiment as their workspace allows while we discuss the topic.\n\nThis class will be a 3 hour class held online through Zoom. There will be time for questions throughout the class and at the end.\n\nEnrolled students will be given directions for clay pickup\, completed work drop off for firing\, and final work pick up after firing that follow current health guidelines. \n  \nMaterials required:\n  \nclay (one bag of clay included with tuition) \nclay tools for fine detail work \nobjects that students think would make good texture \nrolling pin or soup can for flattening clay \n\n  \nOtterness – Saturday\, August 8th\, 9am-12pm (TACOL 2020)\nAbout the instructor: Nina Otterness graduated in 2012 from UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in Studio Art and a concentration in ceramics. SUMMARY:Plein Air Painting Looking Out Your Window (Online)
DESCRIPTION:In this 2.5 hour workshop\, students will learn plein air painting techniques that they can employ from the comfort of their own home\, while finding inspiration from the view out their window.  During the workshop\, students will work on their own paintings as the instructor does a demonstration and offers individual critiques. Students will also be shown examples from art history of artists who have painted vistas of and through their windows.  This workshop is open to students of all skill levels who work in oils\, watercolor\, or acrylic painting.  The instructor will be demonstrating techniques in oils and watercolor.  There will be a focus on composition\, color\, massing\, and atmospheric perspective. \n  \nMaterials List: \nThe ArtSchool is making an effort to reduce the materials required for online classes where possible. For this class\, students should have quality brand paints in oil\, watercolor\, or acrylic. Williamsburg\, Gamblin\, Danial Smith\, Old Holland\, Schmincke\, Winsor & Newton are all great options. DESCRIPTION:Austin – Wed & Fri\, 10/14 & 10/16\, 9am-12pm (Online)\n  \nIn this 2-day workshop\, the instructor will guide students through the basics of creating wearable art using the Tiffany method of Stained Glass (copper foil and soft soldering) through interactive demonstrations on: basic glass cutting\, grinding\, basic foiling\, creating decorative foils\, basic soldering\, decorative soldering techniques\, creating jewelry with broken ceramics and found objects\, making jump rings and eye pins\, as well as discussions and information regarding tools and materials. \n  \nMaterials List: \nThe ArtSchool is making an effort to reduce the materials required for online classes where possible. For this class\, handouts detailing *tools and supplies\, a course outline\, and other information will be emailed to participants prior to class. \n  \n*It is not necessary to collect these items before class as it may be challenging to acquire all items in time. If you have tools\, supplies\, and a project in mind\, you may work along with the instructor. However\, you may find it more beneficial to treat the class like an interactive tutorial where you observe the process and ask questions of the instructor as needed and take notes. The instructor will also discuss different ways to acquire tools and supplies and how to save money. \n  \nAbout the instructor: \nJennifer Austin has been working in stained glass since 1995. She began her journey in glass at the former Stained Glass Art Design in Durham\, NC. She furthered her studies in design work and leaded construction through the Durham Arts Council. Her work is in private collections on the east and west coasts. Hundreds of students have attended her classes and workshops since she began her teaching career in 2000. In addition to teaching at her private studio\, “The Kaleidoscope”\, in Mebane\, NC\, she has also taught for The Alamance County Arts Council\, Central Carolina Community College and has been an instructor for The ArtsCenter since 2001.
