SUMMARY:The Martha Bassett Show: Colin Allured and Lyn Koonce
DESCRIPTION:The Martha Bassett Show welcomes Colin Allured and Lyn Koonce to their 2021 season opener! This old-time inspired radio show is recorded live at the Reeves Theater in Elkin\, NC and is broadcast on 88.5 WFDD\, live streamed to social media\, and presented as a podcast. It features the music of national and regional artists along with the music of Martha Bassett. \n  \nCOLIN ALLURED – Colin Allured is a multi-instrumentalist who offers a truly unique performance experience. He supports his intricately crafted songs with a visually fascinating and self styled footdrum set up and technique. This lifts the many styles and grooves of his songs into the sonic sphere of a full band. Yet the intimacy of the solo artist and the warmth of his lush baritone voice carry the sound. He graduated from the UNC School of the Arts in classical guitar studies\, has studied West African string music\, Indian classical music and has his roots in his dad’s 60s records. The devotion and refinement of his musicianship is all in service of great songs\, danceable beats and a soulful vibe. \n  \nLYN KOONCE – A recent winner of American Songwriter Magazine’s Lyric Contest for her song\, The River\, singer/songwriter Lyn Koonce\, engages audiences with her warmth and authenticity often turning heads from the first song. From ballads to blues\, Lyn’s music is skillful\, unique\, yet universal. It creates traction and stays with you long after the performance. Lyn opened for The Indigo Girls in early 2020 and in the same year released her 4th studio album\, “Begin Again” produced by award winning folk musician\, Amy Speace. \n  \n  \nWatch on YouTube >\n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:HAUNTED presented by Sonny Kelly
DESCRIPTION:Watch on YouTube >\nWatch Talk Back / Q&A >\n  \nThis performance and Q&A will be available to stream via The ArtsCenter’s YouTube through Juneteenth (Saturday\, June 19th\, 2021 at 11:59pm). Watching with family\, friends and community members is a great way to celebrate this important national holiday!\n  \nWhat does a daddy say to his baby boy when the boogie man is real? Confronted by a surge in White supremacist activity and Confederate nostalgia in the nation that he calls home\, one father struggles to explain this wave of hatred and bigotry to his son. In HAUNTED\, actor and playwright\, Dr. Sonny Kelly takes on the voices of historians\, ancestors\, elders\, youths\, politicians\, pundits\, and poets\, as he traces the roots and routes of modern day anti-Black violence in America. Kelly recounts the roots of hatred and fear embedded in the story of the 1898 lynching of Manley McCauley in Orange County\, North Carolina. He also tracks the routes of racialized violence in America as manifested in the colonial justice system\, the Wilmington Massacre of 1898\, the 2015 shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston\, South Carolina\, and the 2020 lynching of Ahmaud Arberry in Brunswick\, Georgia. Kelly digs deep to examine the impact that racial violence has historically had on our minds\, bodies\, and souls in the land of the free and the home of the brave. \n\n\n	Related

DESCRIPTION:Austin – Wednesday and Friday\, Apr 28-30\, 9 am-12 pm (Online)\nIn this 2-day workshop\, the instructor will guide students through the basics of creating wearable art using the Tiffany method of Stained Glass (copper foil and soft soldering) through interactive demonstrations on: basic glass cutting\, grinding\, basic foiling\, creating decorative foils\, basic soldering\, decorative soldering techniques\, creating jewelry with broken ceramics and found objects\, making jump rings and eye pins\, as well as discussions and information regarding tools and materials. SUMMARY:Introduction to Photographic Seeing (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Bielawski – Sunday\, Apr 25\, 1-2:15 pm (Online)\nWe are inundated with images. In the words of Susan Sontag\, “The inventory started in 1839 and since then just about everything has been photographed;” the photographic eye is “insatiable.” In this class we will separate the “simple sentence” photography commonly found on Instagram\, Facebook\, and (most importantly) advertising from more complex\, layered photography. We will also familiarize ourselves with the concepts of “first person” and “third person” photography by looking at the work of photographers like Stephen Shore\, Sally Man\, An-My Lê\, and James van der Zee. This workshop is great for photographers of any kind\, and for anyone interested in photography. \nAbout the Instructor: \nMorgan Bielawski is a writer and photographer from Northern California. She honed her photography skills at Bard College in Upstate N.Y. with professors Stephen Shore and An-My Lê; there she developed a passionate interest in film photography. Morgan writes primarily short stories and nonfiction; her work has been published in The Documentarian\, Lux\, and Sui Generis. She also translates stories and poems from Russian and Middle English to (Modern) English. Morgan has a BA in Written Arts\, and two academic concentrations: one in film photography\, and another in Russian. In her spare time\, Morgan plays and records American folk music and looks after her two fish. \nThis class is conducted online! A computer with audio\, video\, and internet functionality is required. Students will receive Zoom login information the day before the class starts. Student gives permission for The ArtsCenter and for instructor to use their image and comments in class recordings for promotional non-commercial purposes. SUMMARY:Interactive Global Art Project
DESCRIPTION:Liotchev – Thursdays\, Mar 11-25\, 4-5 pm (Youth Online)\n  \nGrades 3-8 \n  \nYou Can’t Spell EARTH Without ART:  \nA FREE interactive global art project on climate change \n  \nJoin artist Ivan Liotchev in a FREE series of online workshops to create exciting and important art about climate change! \nAre you interested in saving our planet through art? Want to make a connection with young artists from around the globe? This 3-part workshop is the perfect way for young artists to learn about climate change\, connect with an art expert\, and create collaborative community artwork with students from Eastern Europe – all from the comfort of home! \nAs we all should know by now\, the climate is changing faster than ever before\, often in dangerous ways that may threaten our future survival. This may sound scary\, but did you know that there are many ways each and every one of us can do our part to avoid such disaster and change the climate for the better? \nFor this workshop series\, we will read parts of an easy-to-read book called Hugo’s History by Sabira Stahlberg. The book will teach us important lessons about how we can help stabilize the climate. We will then create drawings in response to what we learn from the book and our feelings towards it. Your drawings will be incorporated into a new series of artworks Ivan is making about climate change\, as well as featured on the project’s website! \nThis is a series of 3 one-hour workshops\, offered free of charge on a first-come first-served basis. Limited to 10 students\, grades 3-8. The book Hugo’s History will be distributed as a PDF upon signing up. \n  \nMaterials: Pencil\, eraser\, pens (ballpoint and/or ultra thin Sharpie type)\, markers for coloring\, white drawing paper (8 1/2 x 11 in. copy paper is fine)\, scissors\, clear tape \n  \nAbout the Instructor: \nIvan Liotchev is an artist based in Durham\, North Carolina and London\, UK. He earned his MFA from the Slade School of Fine Arts\, UCL\, London (2011) and BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts\, Boston (2004). Splitting his practice between painting and social-engagement\, in 2010 he founded the International Collaborative Drawing Project (ICDP)\, a participatory initiative which uses drawing as a starting point for cooperative creation. Originating within a working-class community in South London\, UK\, the project now works with diverse worldwide communities ranging from Hopi Native Americans to Geneva bankers\, developing drawing events\, exhibitions\, residencies\, public art and multi-media explorations. www.icdpdraw.com \n  \nThe project is supported by the North Carolina Arts Council\, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources\, Durham Arts Council\, local grants administrator\, and The ArtsCenter. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThis class is conducted online! SUMMARY:ARTivism: Using Arts-based Scholarship to Interrogate and Dismantle Racism
DESCRIPTION:The Race\, Racism\, and Racial Equity (R3) Symposium\, co-hosted by the University Office for Diversity and Inclusion\, the Jordan Institute for Families\, and the UNC School of Social Work‘s Office of Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion\, is a series of virtual events that bring together scholars and researchers from across campus to share their work with Carolina and the broader community. \nThe third event in the R3 series\, “ARTivism: Using Arts-based Scholarship to Interrogate and Dismantle Racism\,” will be held on Wednesday\, Feb. 24\, 3–4:30 p.m. \nThe arts can help us better understand systems of oppression and their impacts\, challenge white supremacy\, foster dialogue around race and racism\, and advance racial equity. This event will highlight work by UNC scholars and current and former graduate students to do just that through a variety of artistic genres\, including performance\, storytelling\, music\, painting\, and photography. We are also honored to include a spoken word performance by Chapel Hill’s inaugural Poet Laureate\, CJ Suitt. \nPanelists will include: \n\nCharlie Dupee\, Visual Artist\, Graduate Student\, Department of Art & Art History\nMichael A. Figueroa\, PhD\, Assistant Professor\, Ethnomusicology\, Department of Music\nSusan Harbage Page\, MFA\, Visual Artist\, Photographer\, Associate Professor\, Department of Women’s & Gender Studies\nSonny Kelly\, PhD (UNC ’20)\, Performer\, Storyteller\nJacqueline E. Lawton\, MFA\, Assistant Professor of Playwriting\, Play Analysis\, Theatre for Social Change & Dramaturgy\, Department of Dramatic Art\n\nR3 “ARTivism: Using Arts-based Scholarship to Interrogate and Dismantle Racism” will be moderated by Dr. Travis Albritton\, Associate Dean for Diversity\, Equity & Inclusion at the School of Social Work. \n“We deeply appreciate how our community has responded to the R3 symposium. Our first two events gathered thousands of participants to engage in reckoning with UNC’s racist past and representation\, language\, and cultural appropriation\,” said Allison De Marco\, R3 co-convener\, Advanced Research Scientist\, Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute and Equity Lead\, Jordan Institute for Families. “I am so looking forward to collaborating with my colleagues to present our third event focused on scholarship that uses artistic media to confront racism and white supremacy. Art can touch our hearts and open us up to challenging conversations.” \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Drawing 101 (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Liotchev – Tuesdays\, Jan 12th – Feb 2nd\, 7pm-9pm (Online)\nSuggested experience level: Beginner to Intermediate \nStart the new year off by getting down to the basics with drawing! Whether you’ve never drawn before or are looking to brush up on your skills\, this course will examine the nuts and bolts of drawing which underpin arguably all creative practice. \nThe first class will start with gesture drawing – learning to quickly capture the essence of a scene while recognizing the connection between sight\, mind\, body\, hand and heart. The second and third classes will look at the foundational elements of drawing such as composition\, proportion\, line\, scale\, perspective\, value\, shading\, hatching and texture. Preference will be given to drawing from life (still life\, self-portrait\, portrait (if you have a sitter)\, interior or exterior views\, such as looking through a window)\, but drawing from photographs is also welcome. Along the way\, we’ll also study historical artists who excelled at drawing\, including da Vinci\, Egon Schiele\, Frida Kahlo\, Andy Warhol\, and Lucian Freud. The final class will seek to combine the different skills and concepts learned\, as students are guided to understand their own personal approach to drawing and how to best use and tweak their skillset to their best advantage. \nMaterials \n· Pencils (HB\, 2B\, 4B and 6 or 8B) \n· Graphite sticks (HB\, 2B\, 4B and 6 or 8B) \n· Erasers (kneaded is preferable over rubber) \n· Drawing paper (at least 100lb weight; 140lb is ideal; around 12 x 16 in.) \n· Masking tape \n· Ruler (optional) \n· Conté or wax crayons (optional) \nNote: Please have your subject matter planned for the first class\, whether that’s a still life set-up\, mirror for a self-portrait\, photograph or interior/exterior view. \nThis class is conducted online! A computer with audio\, video\, and internet functionality is required. Student gives permission for The ArtsCenter and for instructor to use their image and comments in class recordings for promotional non-commercial purposes. Refunds and exchanges are not offered for online classes. \nAll ArtSchool registrations have a $3 processing fee added upon check-out. \n\nArtsCenter members receive 15% off of the cost of this course! \n\n\n	Related
