SUMMARY:Ackland Film Forum: “Filibus” Watch Party and Panel
DESCRIPTION:This spring\, in collaboration with the Film Studies Programs in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at UNC-Chapel Hill\, the Ackland Film Forum continues its all virtual series on Queer Cinema\, now expanding to a selection of four international films for a look at Global Queer Cinema. View the selected films on your own or join us for a watch party. Watch parties will be followed by a live post-film panel discussion with scholars from around the globe. \nThe first film in the Global Queer Cinema series will be Filibus (Mario Roncoroni\, 1915\, Italy). The film will be available to stream January 29-February 4\, 2021 with a watch party on Tuesday\, February 2 at 7:30 p.m. followed by a live panel discussion at 9 p.m. Register below to receive a link to stream the film and a link to attend the panel via Zoom on February 2. \nThis program is sponsored by UNC University Libraries. The series is supported in part by Laughing Gull Foundation. \nAbout Filibus \nDirected by Mario Roncoroni and scripted by future science fiction author Giovanni Bertinetti\, Filibus is the most exciting\, witty\, feminist\, steampunk\, cross-dressing aviatrix thriller you will ever see! Previously seen in a badly subtitled\, imperfect version\, Filibus was recently remastered by the Eye Filmmuseum\, restoring the film’s marvelous range of Desmet tinting and toning in the original nitrate material. To bring the film back to its flavor of the period — when the characters Fantomas and Arsène Lupin were worldwide sensations — Milestone hired young poet Austin Renna to write new intertitles based on an improved translation by Eye’s archivist Elif Rongen-Kaynakçi. To go with this fantastical film\, the famed Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra AND Donald Sosin have created two new stunning scores! –Milestone Films \n7:30 p.m. Watch Party | Tweet along with Ackland and UNC Film Studies using #AcklandFilmForum \n9:00 p.m. Panel \nLink to the panel is provided with registration. Streaming links will be sent at a later date. Registration is open!\nCourtesy of Milestone Films.\nTickets \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Blood Done Sign My Name
DESCRIPTION:Mike Wiley brings to life the recollections of author Tim Tyson surrounding the 1970 murder of Henry “Dickie” Marrow in Oxford\, NC and the events that followed. Marrow\, who was black\, was chased from a local store by three white men after reportedly making a crude remark to the wife of one of those men. The conflagration of events shapes the life of the narrator and delves into the racial fabric of America. \nAcclaimed gospel scholar and singer\, Mrs. Mary D. Williams reinforces the action on stage with powerful and moving renditions of spirituals such as “Oh\, Freedom\,” “Swing Low\, Sweet Chariot\,” and “Soon I Will Be Done.” \nThis special\, on-stage performance was recorded in front of a live Zoom audience. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Angels Among Us: A Virtual Choral Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Compelling\, powerful\, and beautiful music amplifies the angelic theme of this season’s repertoire. Encompassing a wide range of musical styles and genres\, Angels Among Us illumines the stories of angels both sacred and secular. The message of the messengers is multi-faceted: hopeful\, healing\, watchful\, compassionate\, merciful\, loving and revealing. \nFor this concert\, we are creating virtual projects of a sampling of our repertoire. These projects are the result of the contributions of many participants – conductor\, singers\, pianist\, section leaders\, and the audio/video designer and editor. A link to the concert on our YouTube channel and a downloadable program will be posted on our website and social media accounts on February 6\, 2021 at 7:00pm. \nWe look forward to the day that we will once again rehearse and perform our music in person\, but until then\, we are grateful for the virtual season that has kept Women’s Voices Chorus singing together during the pandemic. We hope that you enjoy our virtual concert\, Angels Among Us. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Freeman Vines: Hanging Tree Guitars\, Virtual Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Hanging Tree Guitars introduces the work of African American luthier and visual artist Freeman Vines. Vines’ sculptures are imbued with an expressive form and symbolic imagery\, shaped by hand from repurposed wood sourced from the natural and built landscapes around his home in an eastern North Carolina farming community. \nFreeman Vines’ instruments are sculpted from repurposed wood and found materials which are arranged to illuminate the spirit of each object. Among Vines’ most arresting works are a series of guitars carved from sections of a black walnut tree on which an African American man named Oliver Moore was lynched in 1930\, an event that marked one of the final documented lynchings in the state of North Carolina. Vines has crafted this wood into potent and haunting objects\, reclaiming the trophies of past racial violence and transforming it into guitars and a collection of sculpture. \nImages by Timothy Duffy offer a lens on Vines’ person\, environment\, and art\, framing and refracting the psychological impact of the work within the social and historical context of the American South. Transcribed interviews with Vines immerse viewers in the artist’s worldview\, exploring themes of memory\, racial identity\, and spirituality in the rural South. \nA companion book\, Hanging Tree Guitars by Freeman Vines withZoe Van Buren and photographs by Timothy Duffy is now available at musicmaker.org. \nThis exhibit was made possible with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Live Stream: “The Immigrant” Live Score by Tim Carless
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, November 7th\, 2020\, Tim Carless presents The Immigrant\, the second film in his series of Charlie Chaplin live-scores streaming the first Saturday of October\, November and December. \nThe Immigrant\, made in 1917\, is the eleventh of twelve films that Charlie Chaplin made for the Mutual Film Company. It begins aboard a ship\, bound for America\, and upon arrival\, the passengers marvel at the sight of the Statue of Liberty. It features Edna Purviance and Eric Campbell\, both regulars in Chaplin films. This is the first time that Charlie’s character embarks upon a romantic relationship onscreen which in and of itself is remarkable. Although filmed during the silent-era\, Chaplin employed musicians on the set to play music to create moods as the scenes were shot. He later offered\, “The Immigrant touched me more than any other film I made. I thought the end had quite a poetic feeling.” The film made it into the National Film Registry in 1998. \nCarless will be performing on solo guitar live from his studio in Carrboro. The performance can be watched on The ArtsCenter’s YouTube Live: youtube.com/theartscenterlive/live \nWe hope you will join us for another outstanding free live-streamed event! \n\n\n	Related
