SUMMARY:Intuitive Painting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Intuitive Painting | 7.15 – 7.16\nJoin instructor Heather Gerni in a safe and playful space that encourages students to find their creative voice\, have fun\, and see what naturally unfolds on the canvas. \n  \nThe first half of the workshop is the “unlearning”. Students will experiment\, play\, and sling paint how we might imagine a child would. Layer upon layer\, we create a chaotic mess on our canvas. The second half of the workshop is simplifying the chaos to create a unified cohesive painting. \n  \nThis process helps with letting go of expectations\, finding our inner child\, and allowing our creativity and artistic style to unfold organically and authentically. DESCRIPTION:Theo Cokkinos – Thursdays\, October 6-27\, 7:00 – 8:30pm\n  \nWho is this class for?  \nThis class is for anyone wanting a mode of expression. No previous experience is required. The ideal student is someone who is curious about their ability to learn and create with little more than their hands and a piece of paper.   \n. \nWhat will students learn\, and how will they learn it? \nStudents will be inspired and empowered to explore the possibilities of a single piece of paper. Theo will be their coach\, sharing what he has learned and encouraging independent study.   \n. \nProjects that will be undertaken in the course:  \nA variety of gift objects. Japanese washi paper will be made available for students to transform paper models into gifts for family and friends. And yes\, every gift requires the appropriate box\, which we will also be learning how to make.   \n. \nMaterials/equipment that will be used:   \n\nScrap paper \nKami paper \nJapanese washi paper \nHeavyweight brown wrapping paper \n\n\nPaper cutter \nScissors \nGlue sticks \nRulers \nPaper clips \n\n. \nWhat will students be required to bring to class?:  \n\nStudents will be required to bring $20 to the first class session\, which will cover the cost of an origami book and class materials provided by the instructor.  \n\n. \nInstructor bio:  \nTheo Cokkinos grew up in Queens\, NY of Cypriot and Greek American parents. His interest in origami appeared in the mid 90s while he worked as a groundskeeper in Malibu\, CA. It was during this time\, living a simple life with no TV\, radio\, or internet\, that he began to wonder – What can I make with my hands with what is readily available? Scrap paper and origami books from the local library were easy to find.  There at his table\, he sat day after day reading the diagrams as he folded and then folded again until he got it right . . . and then\, a finished product. Yes . . . a feeling of satisfaction. Now on the the next. And so it was. There is a wonderful feeling of accomplishment when you can take a simple piece of paper that has been tossed into the bin and reconfigure it into a keepsake. In 2002\, he made a crane for his sister. Having a creative mind\, she asked if he could work small scale to make her a pair of crane earrings. In completing this project\, he learned to combine paper with metal. This led to the construction of several hanging mobils. After moving to North Carolina he went on to sell origami jewelry at Spiral Jewelry (Hillsborough)\, Firefly (Carrboro)\, and NC Craft Gallery (Carrboro). He has taught for the Carrboro Parks & Recreation Department and at the Seymour Center in Chapel Hill\, and is delighted to now offer a class at The ArtsCenter.   \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Intuitive Painting (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Gerni – Saturday & Sunday\, Mar 12 & 13\, 10am-4pm (In-Person)\n  \nThis weekend workshop provides a non-judgmental and playful space that encourages students to find their creative voice\, have fun\, and see what naturally unfolds on the canvas.\nThe first half of the workshop is the “unlearning”. We experiment\, play\, and sling paint how we might imagine a child would. We create a chaotic layered mess on our canvas. The second half is simplifying the chaos to create a unified cohesive painting. This process helps with letting go of expectations\, finding our inner child\, and allowing our creativity and artistic style to unfold organically and authentically. SUMMARY:Pet Portrait in Oil Paint (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:King – Saturday & Sunday\, Dec 4 & 5\, 1 pm-4 pm (In-Person)\n  \nStudents will learn how to complete a pet portrait in oil paint in this two day workshop. Emphasis will be on drawing the shadow and light shapes first\, then developing the form and adding highlights and darkening shadows. The instructor will supply photos to work from throughout the first day\, and explain the qualities of a good reference photo so that students can find or take photos for Day 2. On the second day\, students will work from their own photos to create a finished portrait of the animal of their choosing. This is scheduled in the holiday season so you can gift a portrait of your fur-baby to yourself\, or paint a loved one’s best friend/fur-baby as a gift! \n  \nAbout the Instructor: \nChristy is known for both her representational oil paintings and whimsical cut paper collages. She finds inspiration in North Carolina nature\, when drawing and painting from life\, and through the process of painting itself which provides a constant opportunity for learning and new experiences. Now in Chapel Hill\, Christy grew up in eastern North Carolina and has also lived in DC and Nashville. She is an art educator with experience designing curriculum and teaching at Montessori schools and art museums including the National Portrait Gallery and Frist Art Museum. She majored in studio art and elementary education at UNC Chapel Hill and also has a master of education from Vanderbilt University. Her art is represented by Well+Wonder\, Serena & Lily\, and G.
