DESCRIPTION:The ArtsCenter’s perennial favorite (this will be their 26th time here at The ArtsCenter!)\, the Tannahill Weavers have spent a half-century as Scotland’s premiere folk band\, combining traditional melodies with driving rhythmic accompaniment and rich vocals to win fans beyond the folk and Celtic music scenes. Celebrating their golden anniversary\, they show no signs of slowing down. In 2014 the band was joined by innovative piper Lorne MacDougall\, who has arranged and performed pipes for many projects including the Disney Pixar movie Brave and Dreamworks’ How to Train Your Dragon 2. Co-founder of the bands Crooked Still and I’m With Her\, O’Donovan is the featured vocalist on The Goat Rodeo Sessions\, the Grammy-winning album by Yo-Yo Ma\, Stuart Duncan\, Edgar Meyer\, and Chris Thile. Her new project Songs and Strings includes the song cycle “Bull Frogs Croon” which uses stunning text by the late\, and former Poet Laureate of Oregon\, Peter Sears\, as well as traditional favorites and songs from her expansive career. \n  \nAoife O’Donovan website > \n  \n\n  \nBorn in the last year of the 1980s\, Taylor Ashton grew up surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the old growth rainforests of Canada’s west coast. His songs are inspired by the primeval crookedness of traditional old-time music\, the humor and heartbreak of Randy Newman\, the cosmic emotionality of mid-career Joni Mitchell\, and the sage vulnerability of Bill Withers. Somehow\, he finds a way to make this all work on the clawhammer banjo. He spent most of late teens and 20s as the frontman of Vancouver-based five-piece Fish & Bird\, releasing four albums of heady progressive folk and gracing stages like the Winnipeg Folk fest\, the Vancouver Folk Fest\, and Glasgow’s Celtic Connections festival. In the past few years he has increasingly spent his days in New York City. His most recent release finds him swapping songs with Grammy-nominated songwriter and guitarist Courtney Hartman\, on the pair’s 2018 duo album Been On Your Side. DESCRIPTION:Presented by Cat’s Cradle\n\nAUSTIN\, Texas — In James McMurtry’s new effort\, The Horses and the Hounds\, the acclaimed songwriter backs personal narratives with effortless elegance (“Canola Fields”) and endless energy (“If It Don’t Bleed”). This first collection in seven years\, due August 20 on New West Records\, spotlights a seasoned tunesmith in peak form as he turns toward reflection (“Vaquero”) and revelation ( closer “Blackberry Winter”). Familiar foundations guide the journey. “There’s a definite Los Angeles vibe to this record\,” McMurtry says. “The ghost of Warren Zevon seems to be stomping around among the guitar tracks. Don’t know how he got in there. He never signed on for work for hire.” \n  \nThe Horses and the Hounds is a reunion of sorts. McMurtry recorded the new album with legendary producer Ross Hogarth (John Fogerty\, Van Halen\, Keb’ Mo’) at Jackson Browne’s Groovemaster’s in Santa Monica\, California\, a world class studio that has housed such legends as Bob Dylan (2012’s Tempest) and David Crosby (2016’s Lighthouse) as well as Browne himself for I’m Alive (1993) and New Found Glory\, Coming Home (2006). McMurtry and Hogarth first worked together 30 years ago\, when Hogarth was a recording engineer in the employ of John Mellencamp at Mellencamp’s own Belmont Studios near Bloomington\, Indiana. Hogarth recorded McMurtry’s first two albums\, Too Long in the Wasteland and Candyland\, for Columbia Records and later mixed McMurtry’s first self-produced album\, Saint Mary of the Woods\, for Sugar Hill Records. Another veteran of those three releases\, guitarist David Grissom (Joe Ely\, John Mellencamp\, Dixie Chicks)\, returns with some of his finest work. \n \nAccordingly\, the new collection marks another upward trajectory: The Horses and the Hounds will be McMurtry’s debut album on genre-defining Americana record label New West Records (Steve Earle\, Rodney Crowell\, Lucinda Williams\, John Hiatt\, Aaron Lee Tasjan\, Buddy Miller\, dozens more). \n  \n“I first became aware of James McMurtry’s formidable songwriting prowess while working at Bug Music Publishing in the ’90s\,” says New West president John Allen. “He’s a true talent. All of us at New West are excited at the prospect of championing the next phase of James’ already successful and respected career.” McMurtry perfectly fits a label housing “artists who perform real music for real people.” After all\, No Depression says of the literate songwriter’s most recent collection\, Complicated Game: “Lyrically\, the album is wise and adventurous\, with McMurtry — who’s not prone to autobiographical tales — credibly inhabiting characters from all walks of life.” “[McMurtry] fuses wry\, literate observations about the world with the snarl of barroom rock\,” National Public Radio says. “The result is at times sardonic\, subversive and funny\, but often vulnerable and always poignant.” \n  \nHis lauded storytelling — check out songs such as “Operation Never Mind” and “Ft. Walton Wake-Up Call” on The Horse and the Hounds— consistently has turned heads for decades now. “James writes like he’s lived a lifetime\,” said John Mellencamp back in 1989\, when Too Long in the Wasteland hit the Billboard 200. “James McMurtry is one of my very few favorite songwriters on Earth and these days he’s working at the top of his game\,” says Americana all-star Jason Isbell. “He has that rare gift of being able to make a listener laugh out loud at one line and choke up at the next. I don’t think anybody writes better lyrics.” McMurtry’s albums Just Us Kids (2008) and Childish Things (2005) back the claim\, each scoring endless critical praise. The former earned McMurtry his highest Billboard 200 chart position in two decades (since eclipsed by Complicated Game) and notched Americana Music Award nominations. Childish Things spent six full weeks topping the Americana Music Radio chart in 2005 and 2006\, and won the Americana Music Association’s Album of the Year\, with “We Can’t Make It Here” named the organization’s Song of the Year. \n  \nOther accolades include a 1996 Grammy nomination for Long Form Music Video for Where’d You Hide the Body and an American Indie Award for Best Americana Album for It Had to Happen (1997).  \n  \nMcMurtry tours year-round and consistently throws down unparalleled powerhouse performances\, reflected in the release of two live discs: the universally lauded Live in Aught-Three on Compadre Records\, and 2009’s Live in Europe\, which captured the McMurtry band’s first European tour and extraordinary live set. Along with seasoned band members Ronnie Johnson\, Daren Hess\, and Tim Holt\, Live in Europe features special guests Ian McLagan (Faces) and Jon Dee Graham (True Believers\, Skunks). DESCRIPTION:Transactors Improv celebrates the ups and downs of romantic love with Valentine’s Day Musical at The ArtsCenter\, Feb. 14. The performance is comprised of five stand-alone episodes\, each improvised from audience suggestions and featuring made-up-on-the-spot songs. Each episode will be introduced with an existing song by the likes of Kurt Weill\, John Prine\, and Lennon and McCartney. \n“Love shows are a Transactors tradition\,” says company director Greg Hohn. “It’s our favorite subject because the emotions are so high\, from despair to euphoria. The audience gets caught up in it too. We had a marriage proposal take place during one of our performances and\, who knows\, maybe someone’s been dumped mid-show too. Regardless\, it’s a rollercoaster ride.” \nThe cast for Valentine’s Day Musical includes special guest Dana Marks\, Anoo Tree Brod\, Greg Hohn\, Bart Hubbard\, Steve Scott\, Steven Warnock\, and Jane Allen Wilson. Glenn Mehrbach provides piano accompaniment. Jenn Evans handles lights and sound. \nTransactors Improv is the longest-running improvisational theater in the south. Their work focuses on emotion\, physicality\, character\, commitment\, teamwork\, and fun. \nThe company formed in 1983 at The ArtsSchool in Carrboro\, N.C.\, as a children’s theater. Much of its work was scripted\, but over time the group metamorphosed into a professional touring company performing improvisational theater for audiences of all ages. \nTransactors Improv performs primarily in Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill and has appeared coast to coast and from Florida to Canada. The company has been heard on National Public Radio and the Canadian Broadcasting Co. Born out of the rich Acadian ancestry of its members and bandleader Michael Doucet’s spellbinding fiddle playing and soulful vocals\, BeauSoleil’s distinctive sound derives from New Orleans jazz\, blues\, rock\, folk\, Zydeco\, country and bluegrass. DESCRIPTION:Do you like to sing? Have you thought about joining a chorus but are too busy to commit? Do you sing in the shower\, in your car\, or along to the radio?  If you answered “yes” to any of these questions\, then you belong in PopUp Chorus! \nPopUp Chorus is the only chorus where you can show up when you want and skip it when you’re too busy. No audition\, no ongoing commitment. Just show up and sing with an ad hoc bunch of other lovely\, excellent people. Together\, we form a chorus\, and are never the same group twice. \nAt each event\, singers arrive and “learn” two or three pre-announced familiar songs\, guided by our funny and encouraging conductor\, Allan Friedman. When each song is ready (we embrace imperfection!) we do a final performance and applaud ourselves heartily!  It’s simple and could not be more fun. DESCRIPTION:Transactors Improv presents their annual holiday musical! This improvised\, full-length show features songs and scenes made up on the spot from audience suggestions. This year’s theme is Secret Santa in a university department. Glenn Mehrbach is the musical director and Broadway veteran Lisa Jolley is the company’s special guest. \nTransactors Improv: If you ho-ho-ho\, they’re doing comedy; if you don’t they’re doing drama. \nTransactors Improv is the longest-running improvisational theater in the south. Their work focuses on emotion\, physicality\, character\, commitment\, teamwork\, and fun. \nThe company formed in 1983 at The ArtsSchool in Carrboro\, N.C.\, as a children’s theater. Much of its work was scripted\, but over time the group metamorphosed into a professional touring company performing improvisational theater for audiences of all ages. \nTransactors Improv performs primarily in Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill and has appeared coast to coast and from Florida to Canada. The company has been heard on National Public Radio and the Canadian Broadcasting Co. SUMMARY:Daughter of Swords and the Dawnbreaker Band
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Cat’s Cradle \nIn 2017\, Alexandra Sauser-Monnig began recording a set of songs… …about a breakup that had yet to happen. Her partnership had drifted into a comfortable state of indecision\, stalling when it came time to make big life moves or chase new horizons. She had the sense that she needed to slip the relationship in order to pursue everything else life might have in store-more music\, more adventures\, a general sense of the unknown. Those feelings drifted steadily into a set of songs that lamented the inevitable loss but\, more important\, outlined the promise of the future. Recording the ten tracks that became her stunning solo debut\, Dawnbreaker\, under the new name Daughter of Swords gave Sauser-Monnig permission to go. \nDawnbreaker began as the first phase of Sauser-Monnig’s return to music after stepping to the sidelines for the better part of a decade. Her college trio\, Mountain Man\, rose to quick acclaim for their peerless harmonies around 2010\, but the friends slowly drifted apart\, following their own interests to different coasts and concerns. While working on a flower farm as a farmhand\, though\, Sauser-Monnig realized that she missed the emotional articulation she found in writing songs and singing them and resolved to start again. She pieced together an album just as Mountain Man-now newly gathered in the fertile Piedmont of North Carolina-began to regroup for its second LP\, 2018’s aptly named Magic Ship. Working with Sylvan Esso’s Nick Sanborn\, Sauser-Monnig shaped what began as quiet reflections into confident compositions\, crackling with country swagger and a sparkling pop warmth. They were\, after all\, preemptive odes to the next phase of life. \nCalling the ten tunes of Dawnbreaker breakup songs is to hamstring them with elegiac expectations\, to paint them as sad-eyed surrenders to loss and grief. Sure\, there is the gentle opener “Fellows\,” a hushed number that explores the turmoil of being unable to reciprocate the feelings of a wild and shy\, tall and fine man. And there’s the blossoming country shuffle of “Easy Is Hard\,” where Sauser-Monnig stands in the yard and sees her lover leave\, his taillights fading into the night sky; she can’t sleep\, so she gets up to turn the lights and stereo on\, to “feel my soul coming down.” \nEven there\, amid the throes of a life convulsion\, there is a wisp of hope and possibility\, framed by the way “the dim light change[s] into dawn\, rosy blue\, pink fawn.” The very heart of Dawnbreaker is not the impending breakup that inspired many of its songs but the sense of liberation and breaking out that the breakup inspired. Buoyed by the insistent patter of a drum machine and rich acoustic guitars\, Sauser-Monnig finds herself in search of new thrills during “Gem\,” whether pondering the fleeting nature of existence at a waterfall’s edge or watching the shapes of mountains seemingly dance beneath her headlights. The muted\, harmonica-lined boogie of “Sun” begins with a vulnerable confession\, a revelation of loneliness; it is\, however\, a low-key anthem for the open road\, about giving oneself over to the infinity of solitude and an endless strip of asphalt.
