DESCRIPTION:Family Performance Series: The Magic Of African Rhythm \nSaturday\, April 29th \nShow: 7:00pm \nThe Magic Of African Rhythm is a Durham-based ensemble of performers and teaching artists that uses traditional and original songs\, music\, dance\, and storytelling to explore African history and culture with audiences and students. Ensemble members hail from Guinea and Liberia West Africa\, with blood ties to Barbados\, South Carolina\, and the richest parts of the African Diaspora. The Magic Of African Rhythm’s mission is to connect and reconnect to traditional African culture and values\, providing a welcoming experience for all ages.  Tickets are only $10 – Free for children under 5! \nOn April 29th\, The Magic Of African Rhythm will present a dance and drumming teen workshop\, family performance\, and an all-ages community tapestry project at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro. Their interactive presentation\, Djembe Fire!\, is a singing\, dancing\, and drumming adventure highlighted by the melodies from their storytelling instruments. \nThere is an added (free!) opportunity for teens to take a dance and drumming workshop at 4pm on April 29th. She first taught\, performed\, and choreographed in Boston\, where she was a member of Susan Rose and DanceWorks\, serving on the faculties at Radcliffe\, DanceWorks and the Boston Conservatory. Her music has been described as “beautifully haunting” (Bandcamp Daily)\, “stunning” (Foxy Digitalis)\, and “spellbinding” (Lost and Found Sounds). Bandcamp featured her albums Sonic Essences and lightness as New & Notable releases\, and her music has appeared on radio shows from Asheville to Australia and in audio compilations from Washington\, DC\, to Oxford\, UK. She has performed at Carnegie Hall\, and in addition to her own shows and festival performances\, she has opened for John Cale (The Velvet Underground). \nTonight\, Winter will present an evening of music\, poetry\, and visuals centered around her newest work\, Frost\, a collection of songs consisting of the poems of Robert Frost set to wintry piano and voice compositions\, or sometimes spun wildly into ambient space.  The art-folk trio\, The River Otters will open. \nArt-Folk trio\, The River Otters\, are world builders. Each of their compositions is a carefully rendered landscape with its own cast of characters and gravitational rules. Hailing from the woodlands of Orange County\, NC\, their raga-infused chamber blues and soft-spoken country narratives evoke the complexities of the forest. With a wide range of influences that includes John Fahey\, Ahmad Jamal\, and Leonard Cohen\, they play an eclectic array of original and traditional songs that are both deep and approachable. Their music not only soothes and delights but inspires reflection.
