DESCRIPTION:What do an Irish immigrant\, an unhoused person\, an essential worker and a child in her unstudied wisdom have in common? Their humanity calls to our own.  \nThis free storytelling performance for adult audiences is a retrospective show for our times\, comprised of three original dramatic monologues written across Milbre Burch’s nearly-fifty-year career alongside family history and a personal story. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free\, in-person\, creative poetry workshop with the talented Chapel Hill Poet Laureate\, Cortland Gilliam.  \nAcross the globe\, Black\, Indigenous\, and other minoritized communities of color are among the most vulnerable to the adverse consequences of environmental crises and the solutions proposed to remedy them. Nevertheless\, popular media often separates environmental concerns from the socio-political-economic contexts that produce them\, thereby marginalizing the knowledge and contributions of non-White environmental organizers and communities. \nThis two-hour environmental justice education and poetry writing workshop will incorporate lessons from local struggles for environmental justice within BIPOC communities to help connect the sometimes abstract idea of climate change to its effects on people’s real-life experiences.Participants will then  practice writing poetry as an exercise in radical imagining and political advocacy for an equitable and just environmental future. From their poetry\, each participant will choose words they find important. \nEach word will be planted in the ground to grow into powerful\, living voices of expression in public spaces throughout Chapel Hill. In early March\, there will be several opportunities to volunteer as a Floragardener to plant your word. SUMMARY:Langston Hughes’s 1931 visit to Chapel Hill: The Scottsboro Case and Legal Lynching
DESCRIPTION:OCCRC\, Carolina Public Humanities\, and the Chapel Hill Public Library will host NCSU English Professor Dr. Jason Miller to discuss Langston Hughes’ most famous anti-lynching poem\, which he debuted in Chapel Hill during his 1931 visit to Orange County. His appearance was so controversial that police were stationed outside the door of his public reading. Though he wrote nearly three dozen anti-lynching poems between 1919-67\, none equaled the immediate or lasting impact of “Christ in Alabama.” This multimedia presentation documents and contextualizes the most unforgettable moment in Hughes’s lifelong national campaign against American lynching culture. SUMMARY:History\, Race\, and a Way Forward in the Chapel Hill Community: Reparations Book Club
DESCRIPTION:YOU are invited to join authors William “Sandy” Darity and Kirsten Mullen in a community reading of their book\, “From Here to Equality: Reparations for Black Americans in the 21st Century” in a 4-part community book club. DESCRIPTION:All interested community members are invited to participate in a focus group to provide input on the 140 West Plaza and the Exhale sculpture from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday\, October 16th in Room A at the Chapel Hill Public Library (100 Library Drive\, Chapel Hill\, NC). \nIn June of 2018\, Town Council directed staff to initiate a stakeholder input process to explore ideas for activating the 140 West Plaza and receive input about the idea of relocating the Exhale sculpture. This focus group is one of those stakeholder input sessions. \nWe expect this session to last one hour. The session is divided into four short guided activities designed to innovatively engage stakeholders\, so please bring your creativity and curiosity!
