SUMMARY:Glaze Mixing & Making with Fun Chemistry Fundamentals
DESCRIPTION:Make your own ceramics glazes! On Saturday\, students will learn about the four major components that make up a glaze and explore the properties and functions of a glaze recipe. Handouts will detail the themes discussed. On Sunday\, students will have the opportunity to make glazes themselves. \n  \nThe regular ceramics studio fee is included in tuition. However\, this fee will go towards glaze materials rather than clay & firing costs. SUMMARY:Zen and Spin: Mindful Centering on the Potter’s Wheel
DESCRIPTION:Explore basic mindfulness techniques and unravel the mystery of centering clay on the potter’s wheel. Participants will be guided in breathing\, attention setting\, and connecting clay throwing to mindful movement practices. Like Tibetan Monks who create sand mandalas\, we will focus our attention on the process. All clay will be reclaimed at the end of the workshop as a reminder that nothing is permanent. \n\nParticipants do not need to purchase a tool kit. Students will receive the customary bag of clay to continue their practice. SUMMARY:Visual Analysis: Understanding Your Ceramic Aesthetic
DESCRIPTION:In this course you will learn the process of visual analysis that helps artists and critics describe and evaluate artwork. We will discuss how the elements and principles of design apply to ceramic work and how to employ them in ways that appeal to your own particular artistic taste. This critical analysis will help you understand why you are thrilled by one piece and displeased with another. For the first half of the class we will focus on analyzing form and function. SUMMARY:Handbuilding and Wheelthrowing
DESCRIPTION:General handbuilding and sculpture techniques will be discussed and demonstrated. We will practice a few basic skills\, and then students are encouraged to devise their own ideas for projects which I will work with them to plan and complete. (I will always have ideas for projects if you’re not sure what to make). Students are encouraged to try wheel throwing as well. Intermediate wheel students looking to refine their skills are welcome to focus solely on wheelthrowing. I will be available for wheel throwing demos during the second half of class.
