SUMMARY:Ceramic Jewelry and Surface Design (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Eastman – Fridays\, Nov 5 – Dec 3\, 9 am-12 pm (In-Person)\nWhether you are new to clay or want to experiment with shifting scale and function\, this class is a great chance to explore creating wearable ceramic art. We will cover small slab construction\, bead-making\, carving\, sgraffito\, mishima\, and glaze alternatives. After our work is fired\, we will experiment with combining our clay creations with cord\, wire\, and other materials to create finished jewelry pieces. \nNote: No class on Friday\, 11/26 \n  \nInstructor Bio: \nAngela Eastman is an artist and designer residing in Hillsborough\, North Carolina. She holds an MFA in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art and completed the Core Fellowship program at Penland School of Crafts. Her sculptural works explore the relationships between adaptability\, consumption\, and a sense of home. Angela teaches workshops to adults and youth in a wide variety of media\, including basketweaving\, ceramics\, textiles\, paper crafts\, and metalworking. \n  \nDue to the spread of the Delta Variant starting October 1\, 2021\, The ArtsCenter will be requiring proof of vaccination and masks (as per state-mandate) for anyone who attends our ArtSchool classes and in-person performances. SUMMARY:Polymer Clay Jewelry Making for Beginners (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Hooper – Saturday\, October 23\, 10am – 12pm (In-Person)\n  \nLearn to create your own accessories to perfectly match your style. In this workshop you’ll design and create your own custom earrings. From custom color mixing\, to the perfect size and style\, you’ll design stud or dangle earrings that you’ll want to wear everyday! Polymer clay is incredibly lightweight\, durable\, and so easy to clean – it’s the perfect medium for any beginner to learn to create with. In this workshop you’ll learn the best supplies and the basics of working with clay from an experienced clay artist who can’t wait to answer all your questions and help you perfect your creations. Bring a friend and come create with us! \nNote: Students will need to return to the Box office the following week to pick up their finished earrings. \n  \nInstructor Bio: \nLauren Hooper is a self-taught artist who loves to help people live a joyfully creative life. She loves teaching others how to find and develop their creative skills. Traveling the world\, making stuff\, and telling stories are her greatest passions and her day job. DESCRIPTION:Eastman – Sundays\, Sep 19 – Oct 3\, 10 am-1 pm (In-Person)\nWant to learn to add unique designs to your pottery\, or to transfer your drawings to ceramics? This three week workshop will start with drawing exercises using found objects and organic forms to develop pattern and line during the first week. In the second week we will cover techniques such as sgraffito\, mishima\, slip transfer\, and more to embellish leather-hard greenware with your designs. After bisque firing\, we will have one final meeting to glaze your creations. Beginners welcome\, but some experience working with clay will be useful. \nStudents are welcome to bring their own leather-hard greenware to work with\, or practice on clay slabs that will be available in class. \n  \nInstructor Bio: Angela Eastman is an artist and designer residing in Hillsborough\, North Carolina. She holds an MFA in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art and completed the Core Fellowship program at Penland School of Crafts. Her sculptural works explore the relationships between adaptability\, consumption\, and a sense of home. SUMMARY:Handbuilding and Wheel Throwing (In-person)
DESCRIPTION:Otterness – Saturdays\, Aug 7 – Aug 28\, 9am – 12pm (In-person)\n  \nHandbuilding and Wheel Throwing  \nThis class will cover a general overview of handbuilding and wheel throwing techniques. I will demonstrate a few basic skills\, and then students are encouraged to devise their own ideas for projects which I will work with them to plan and complete. (I will always have a list of ideas for projects if you’re not sure what to make). Beginning students are encouraged to try wheel throwing if they have never done so before or they can focus solely on handbuilding and sculptural projects. Intermediate wheel students looking to refine their skills are welcome to focus solely on wheel throwing. I will also discuss and demonstrate the use of colored slips\, underglazes and glaze techniques for decorating.  \nStudents will need to purchase a set of basic ceramics tools before the start of the first class for their personal use. 8 piece pottery tool kits can be found online or in local craft stores for $10-$15.  \n  \nTuition includes the cost of clay\, glaze materials\, and firing fees. Mixed-level students are invited to practice wheel-throwing techniques with the goal of refining your approach\, building new skills\, and challenging yourself to throw more advanced forms. Molly will focus on techniques for throwing with consistent results\, while also emphasizing the importance of design for making functional pots. Interested students may work on component making such as lids\, spouts\, handles\, and/or matching sets. Everyone will finish their work with surface decoration and/or glazing. Prerequisite: at least one beginning wheel-throwing class. \n  \nMaterials needed: Basic clay tool kit\, hand towels (optional: apron) \n  \nAbout the Instructor: \nMolly Cronenwett is an artist\, photographer\, teacher and mother who lives in Hillsborough. After growing up in Michigan and New Hampshire\, she moved to NC in 1997 to earn an MA in Art History from UNC-Chapel Hill and a second BA in Art Education from NCCU. Since migrating south\, Molly has taught art and art history to all ages—from preschoolers to adults—at a charter school\, at her own community art school in Hillsborough\, and through private lessons and camps at her home. She specializes in ceramics\, drawing\, and painting. As a studio teacher\, Molly believes a focus on art history offers students a deeper understanding of art\, as well as a catalog of successful imagery and ideas. She wants her students to realize that they are part of an enormous global community of artists—past and present—from whom they can gain inspiration. \n  \nTuition includes the cost of a bag of recycled clay\, glaze materials\, and firing fees. DESCRIPTION:Otterness – Saturdays\, October 10th\, 17th\, and 31st\, 9am-12:30pm (In Person)\n  \nThis three-session class will cover the scope of making a ceramic mug. In the first class students will learn how to throw a mug on the wheel as well as how to handbuild a mug. The second class will cover trimming thrown work and adding handles and slip decorations to complete work for bisque firing. In the final class we will glaze our bisqued mugs. Class size will be capped at 4 students to ensure social distancing protocol can be followed. Students are encouraged to research mugs online and bring images to the first class for guidance and inspiration. \n  \nPlease note dates: October 10th\, 17th\, and 31st. 9am-12:30pm. \n  \nMaterials: \n-Tuition includes the cost of glaze materials\, firing fees\, and a bag of clay. \n-Students are highly encouraged to purchase and bring a set of clay working tools for personal use on the wheel and handbuilding. Simple 8 piece sets can be purchased online or at local craft/hobby stores. Students will also need to bring plastic grocery bags with which to cover their work and boxes in case they wish to take work home to work on in between classes. \n  \nAbout the instructor: Nina Otterness graduated in 2012 from UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in Studio Art and a concentration in ceramics. After graduation she was a research collaborator with Professor Nam at UNC Chapel Hill for 2 years. She has been teaching at the Carborro Arts Center since 2014. She currently live in Mebane with her husband and two young boys as well as 11 geese and 7 ducks. DESCRIPTION:Explore basic mindfulness techniques and unravel the mystery of centering clay on the potter’s wheel. Participants will be guided in breathing\, attention setting\, and connecting clay throwing to mindful movement practices. Like Tibetan Monks who create sand mandalas\, we will focus our attention on the process. DESCRIPTION:Students of all skill levels are encouraged to take this class. Whether you’ve never used a wheel or you have years of experience you’ll learn how to build and expand your skills and create beautiful functional ceramic forms. For students already comfortable with the basics we will focus on improving your skills and throwing larger and more consistent forms. For those looking to move into large and complex forms the focus will be on learning to control more clay and adjusting your technique appropriately. All students will learn to work with glazes and other decorating methods that will result in lovely\, functional pieces of pottery. \n  \nSection D) Anya Avrutskaya – Thursdays\, 6:30-9pm\, May 14 – Jun 11 (Spring 2020)\n\nAll ArtSchool registrations have a $3 processing fee added upon check-out.Tuition includes one bag of clay and covers glazes and firing fees\, but not tools. SUMMARY:Visual Analysis: Understanding Your Ceramic Aesthetic
DESCRIPTION:In this course you will learn the process of visual analysis that helps artists and critics describe and evaluate artwork. We will discuss how the elements and principles of design apply to ceramic work and how to employ them in ways that appeal to your own particular artistic taste. This critical analysis will help you understand why you are thrilled by one piece and displeased with another. For the first half of the class we will focus on analyzing form and function.
