DESCRIPTION:This is a seated show. \nIn their early days\, Damn Tall Buildings didn’t rehearse – they busked. Now\, whether live or on record\, the band still radiates the energy of a ragtag crew of music students playing bluegrass on the street. But anchoring that energy is their instrumental chops\, their strong songwriting\, and their varied influences that stretch beyond bluegrass\, even beyond American roots music altogether. Whether sharing lead vocals and instrumental solos or blending their voices into high-spirited harmony\, Damn Tall Buildings are a tight unit that contains more than the sum of its parts. \nPrimary vocalist and lyricist Max Capistran’s singing recalls old blues and The Band-style roots-rock\, whereas Sasha Dubyk’s time studying musical theater is evident in her rich vocal tone and soulful flair. The interplay between Avery Ballotta’s fiddle and Jordan Alleman’s banjo brings stratospheric dimension to the churning rhythm section of Capistran’s guitar and Dubyk’s bass. The band’s harmony singing is tight without being too slick – they sound like four individual voices joined together in celebration\, not a perfectly polished machine. Their choruses are the kind you sing along to with a glass raised into the air. Their lyrics find beauty and glory in the mundane\, workaday struggle of everyday life: time keeps passing\, you don’t like your job\, you drink too much\, you laugh with your friends\, you search for a home\, and you dream about what else might be out there. You carry on. This is what Damn Tall Buildings sings about\, what they seek to share with their audience. \nThis has long been the case\, even when their audience was simply whoever happened to be passing by. In 2013\, then students at Boston’s Berklee College of Music\, the band took their instruments to nearby street corners and jammed for hours on old bluegrass and blues songs\, traditional fiddle tunes\, and eventually their own original music. They had become fast friends: Ballotta and Alleman met playing frisbee on Boston’s Revere Beach\, while Capistran and Dubyk met in class\, when they were wrongfully accused of cheating off each other on a test because they had put down the exact same incorrect answer. Busking\, a continuous test of one’s ability to command an audience’s attention\, cemented their closeness and fostered their infectious\, captivating performance style. It’s how they learned half of their repertoire\, and it’s where Dubyk first picked up the bass. Since then\, they’ve made three albums: 2014’s Cure-All\, 2015’s self-titled\, and their forthcoming third album\, Don’t Look Down. DESCRIPTION:Formed in the summer of 2015\, Illiterate Light transcend expectations of typical rock music through their limitations as a duo. DESCRIPTION:Tall Heights have relentlessly built a career from the ground up. Starting as buskers on the streets of Boston and now performing in packed venues across North America\, Europe\, and beyond\, the duo has distilled their sound in an organic and unselfconscious way. The unmistakable DNA of their music draws on many elements\, but the blend of their two distinct voices\, in both harmony and unison\, is what elevates it and separates it from the pack. \nHailing from the Boston area\, Paul Wright and Tim Harrington met each other in their hometown of Sturbridge through Tim’s older brother. The friendship blossomed in high school when they both took up the guitar and began working on music together. It didn’t take long for them to see the potential hidden in these casual jam sessions. As Paul recalls\, “Tim transformed from kid brother to musical collaborator over the course of a summer.” \nTall Heights is now set to release two highly-anticipated singles\, ‘Keeps Me Light’ and ‘Under Your Skin’\, both mixed by Grammy-nominated engineer Damien Lewis. Following on the success of their viral single ‘Spirit Cold’\, this new material captures a similar authentic and meaningful energy\, but also shows a side we have not yet seen of the pair. The self-produced project\, recorded in their simple home studio\, captures that raw moment between albums\, delivering some of their most honest and heartfelt work to date. Written and recorded in a reflective lull between hectic periods of touring\, the new tracks reaffirm Tall Heights’ commitment to a singular sound and an equally rare friendship. \n‘Under Your Skin’ rides a wave of ethereal harmony\, creating a mesmeric atmosphere of nostalgia. The introspective track\, which features additional vocals from Berklee College of Music’s Upper Structure\, is a song for the next generation. It was written when Harrington was expecting his first child and completed soon after his son was born. Around that same time\, Wright’s brother had a daughter too. It was a moment of reckoning for Tall Heights\, a moment to peek over the partition into posterity. In their words\, “It’s a reflection on living. It’s about the joy of welcoming a new human into existence\, and the heartache of bringing them into a frightening\, twisted world. We liked the word play of “under your skin” being both a reference to blood relation\, AND how dads get under their kids’ skin”. \nWith ‘Keeps Me Light’\, they explore the sense of safety felt in friendship. Even as humankind marches on into darkness\, there will always be a safe space in the heart of a friend. The track showcases a rich string arrangement\, additional a cappella vocals from Upper Structure\, and features Harrington’s parlor-sized resonator guitar\, which gives it a bluesy\, almost Southern grit. Together\, the two tracks give audiences an intimate look at a poignant and potent time in the lives of both artists. \nCombining Paul’s lifetime of classical training\, Harrington’s spontaneous artistic instincts\, and the prismatic union of their unique voices\, Tall Heights’ sonic imprint is in a category all its own. \nTall Heights’ recordings have amassed over 275 million streams. Ultrafaux has performed at top music festivals and concert halls all over the world both as a trio and as a larger ensemble featuring top guest musicians from the jazz\, bluegrass\, folk\, classical\, and world music scenes.  \nThe Ultrafaux Ensemble has been featured at Festival Django Reinhardt in France\, Django By The Sea ME\, Django-A-Gogo NY\, Napa Valley Jazz Society\, Kennedy Center DC\, Midwest Gypsy Swingfest\, Charm City Django Jazzfest\, Baltimore Jazzfest\, Django Birthday Festival NC\, Djangoary at Glen Allen Performing Arts Center VA\, and Preston Jazz and Improvisation Festival UK\, to name a few.   \nUltrafaux is an acoustic powerhouse of two guitars and upright bass that has thrilled a wide variety of audiences at jazz festivals and concert halls all over the world since their first CD release in 2014. Guitarists Michael Joseph harris and Sami Arefin trade dazzling leads and harmonize together on rich gypsy-inspired melodies. Ultrafaux started out as a trio but has evolved to include violin\, clarinet\, accordion\, and mandolin. The list of top guest artists include Evan Price (San Francisco)\, Jason Anick (Boston)\, Giacomo Smith (London)\, Connor Stewart (New Orleans)\, Jonathan Greene (New York)\, Dallas Vietty (Philadelphia)\, Danny Knicely (Virginia)\, Matt Andrews (Baltimore)\, and Aaron Malone (Washington\, DC). Lead guitarist and composer Michael Joseph Harris was invited to perform at the prestigious Festival Django Reinhardt in France in 2017 as the highlight of a European tour as well as Preston Jazz and Improvisation Festival in England in 2018 as part of a tour of the UK.  \nUltrafaux made the front page of The Baltimore Sun Weekend section in 2016 and was named one of the top 10 artists in Baltimore by Baltimore Style Magazine that same year. DESCRIPTION:“King Buffalo is a psychedelic trio in the classic format of bass\, drums\, and guitar\, whose expansive and thunderous music is anything but easily definable. \nFormed by three long-standing members of the blooming Rochester\, NY rock scene\, King Buffalo gathered in September of 2013 to start working on a new musical collaboration in a heavy rock vein. Their efforts spawned a demo release and several splits and one-offs which\, coupled with their impressive live show\, quickly gained them an international audience. \nNearly exactly three years after their formation\, written during and out of jam sessions\, (King Buffalo released Orion)… nine tracks that are texturally rich and oozing with psychedelic goodness\, yet honed and driving in the next blink of an eye. Lush\, shimmering melodies á la Dead Meadow and free-flowing grooves… with the full force of fuzzed-out stoner rock riffs\, all coinciding organically. Impressively\, King Buffalo’s focus extends beyond composition and into the technical realm; Orion was recorded entirely by the band in the very same rehearsal room that played host to the songs’ creation.” – Sludgelord \n“The question of how… heavy psych upstart trio King Buffalo will follow-up their debut full-length\, Orion\, is answered in the form of the three-track Repeater EP. In the year-plus since the album’s first\, (self-)release in 2016\, the three-piece of guitarist/vocalist Sean McVay\, bassist Dan Reynolds and drummer Scott Donaldson signed to Stickman Records and oversaw an official issue of the record and have toured Stateside with All Them Witches and in Europe alongside labelmates Elder\, and the EP brings three new cuts that represent the first new music they’ve produced following this productive time. \nIt is 24 minutes of material\, and more than 13 of that resides within the opening title-track (also the longest of the set; immediate points)\, but in terms of flow and conveying a sense of how their progression is unfolding\, Repeater feels like the first chapter in a larger story more than a standalone offering. That is to say\, the vibe is more mini-album than single-song showcase for throwaways or “extras” from a recording session. \nPart of that may of course owe to the fluidity in King Buffalo’s approach overall\, which was certainly a factor on Orion and just as certainly hasn’t at all been diminished by the stretches of time they’ve spent on the road\, but there’s a perceptible resounding in the molten aspects of “Repeater\,” “Too Little too Late” and “Centurion” that underlines the purposefulness with which King Buffalo engage such an open feel in what they do. Jamming is a crucial part of it at their foundation\, but as far out as they go\, their chemistry is put to use in servicing a song\, even in something as vast as “Repeater” itself\, which is their longest single track to-date. \nI don’t know and won’t try to speculate where King Buffalo might go with their sophomore full-length when the time comes for it\, how they might continue to grow\, what they might push toward in terms of arrangements or execution or general sound\, but Repeater finds them brimming with confidence both as individuals and as a unit\, and their songwriting here hits a new level of craftsmanship that only raises one’s hopes even after such an impressive debut long-player. DESCRIPTION:You can hear black midi’s rehearsal space from the other end of the road. A rhythmic racket blasts from behind the iron lion knocker on the door of a dilapidated Georgian townhouse in south west London. It’s only when they’ve finished playing that they can hear it bang and let you in… \nInside\, the energy only lessens a notch. Geordie Greep\, black midi’s curiously voiced singer\, and guitarist Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin sit with guitars on their laps\, occasionally flickering out riffs to illustrate a point. The repartee between the pair\, and bassist Cameron Picton and drummer Morgan Simpson\, is quiet but quick and laconic. \nIt’s a connection reflected in the intensely focused and driven live shows with which black midi have made their name\, Over the past year or so\, this fearsomely youthful group – Greep and Picton are 19\, Simpson and Kelvin just a year older – have built a reputation for fierce\, uncompromising and ever-evolving live shows that\, though they’ve drawn comparisons to the likes of Shellac\, sound like nothing else around at the moment. After a series of early gigs at Brixton’s Windmill\, their increasing reputation led to requests for support slots with Shame\, and a debut American tour that saw them win over new fans at SXSW and beyond. \nblack midi bonded over shared musical enthusiasms\, or “liking messed up things” as Kelvin puts it\, including an appreciation for rapper Danny Brown\, Death Grips\, Deerhoof\, Miles Davis and Talking Heads\, who they like so much they called a song… Talking Heads. Greep says that “we’ve always tried to make it heavy but danceable\, melodic but good rhythms. It is accessible music\, there are experimental aspects that we’ve taken from when we went crazy at the beginning\, we’ve just reigned it in to make something that is pop music.” \nIt feels like an explosion from a group of young men who have long been steeped in making music. Morgan Simpson grew up in a church and took up the drums when he was two. Greep started out playing along to the likes of Franz Ferdinand’s Take Me Out and Black Sabbath on “the OG” Guitar Hero. “I was like ‘this is badass’\, I thought the songs were sick so I borrowed CDs of my dad\, I got into that music and thought ‘now let’s learn the real guitar’”\, he says. The foursome all met at the Brit School\, the music college that has turned out the likes of Adele\, and are full of praise for their education and teachers for giving them a vital grounding in musical collaboration. \nWhile studying\, the group paid their way by teaching music and doing sessions for friends\, and Greep and Kelvin would go busking in Bromley. This actually ended up giving them one of their best songs\, Ducter. “Back when we were kids\, well three years ago\, but when you’re a kid\, busking is a chill way to make money. Some days versions of Jimi Hendrix’ ‘Purple Haze’ and blues and soul tracks might yield a couple of hundred quid\, others were less lucrative. Sometimes we got £5\,” says Greep. “It was one of those days when we got £5 and we thought\, ‘let’s just jam our own stuff.’ People were saying ‘what’s going on?’” \nWhen the group began\, they had far more rules and regulations about what should and shouldn’t be done. This evolved\, says Greep\, into an “anything goes” policy of experimentation\, “if it works\, if we keep thinking about it\, just do it. DESCRIPTION:At the center of Leslie Stevens’ music is that notoriously heart-catching voice. She can belt it out grandly when she wants to\, but the Los Angeles singer also possesses a distinctively honeyed tone that imbues her new album\, Sinner\, with a radiant charisma that sparks both ebullient love songs and more intimate ballads. \nStevens’ voice is so beguiling that she has developed a thriving sideline as an in-demand singer who has recorded and toured with a litany of disparate musicians\, including Florence + the Machine\, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James\, Father John Misty\, Jenny O.\, Joe Walsh\, Jackson Browne\, Jonny Fritz\, and John Fogerty. \nStevens might be a singer’s singer\, but it is her bold original songwriting that elevates Sinner from a merely dazzling vocal showcase into an artistically ambitious\, poignantly affecting and sometimes startling work. The new album is released on LyricLand LLC and out on Thirty Tigers/The Orchard\, and Stevens is scheduled to head out on the road for a series of European festivals in August and September 2019. Produced by Jonathan Wilson (Dawes\, Roger Waters\, Father John Misty) – who added to the record’s moody atmosphere by playing a variety of instruments (guitars\, bass\, drums\, percussion and even Mellotron) – Sinner is a stirring statement of purpose by the native Missouri singer. \nStevens’ two previous full-length recordings – Roomful of Smoke (when she fronted the beloved country-rock combo Leslie Stevens & The Badgers) and her first solo album\, The Donkey and the Rose – led Los Angeles Times to declare that she is “one of the city’s best” and L.A. Weekly to anoint her as Best Country Singer in 2018. But Sinner represents something of a daring step forward for the singer-guitarist. Although the album features such quintessential Stevens folk-pop gems as “Sylvie” and the ethereal consolation of the country-rock ballad “You Don’t Have to Be So Tough\,” Sinner also branches out into unexpected territory\, like “Teen Bride\,” a candied reverie that’s as close as Stevens has ever come to 1950s-style teen pop. \n“Teen Bride” floats by so airily\, with Stevens’ lulling voice adorned by beams of celestial\, churchy organ and wisps of jazzy guitar\, that you might not notice that she has deftly sketched a tear-jerking portrait of a tragic teen pregnancy in just a few loaded lyrics (“A God who lied”) wrapped up in a 2:32-minute pop confection: “Song in her head/And he stood like a man/With a rose on his chest/She was with child/With a boy at her breast.” \nEven more provocative is “The Tillman Song\,” a strangely surreal and passionately raging anthem about Pat Tillman\, the popular NFL defensive back who enlisted in the U.S. Army at the height of his career only to be killed in Afghanistan in a controversial friendly-fire incident. The song transcends right- and left-wing ideologies as Stevens blends a reverential appreciation for Tillman’s service with impressionistic imagery that sears and gets to the heart of the matter\, even as Jonathan Wilson’s furious hard-rock guitar solos punctuate her rueful words: “I chose to stay and be the artist/And you chose to go and kill/And I have slaughtered my own armies/And you have done no ill/You shouted ‘This war is illegal/And I believe in love’/as the bombs fell into Baghdad/And the hawks came for the doves.” \nLinks: Website | Facebook | Instagram | Spotify \n\n\n	Related

DESCRIPTION:After two studio albums and nearly seven years as a band\, Free Throw is making a significant change to their identity. The group – who has sung openly of personal struggles related to substance abuse and body image – is holding nothing back on What’s Past is Prologue\, their third full length record\, due out March 29\, 2019 on Triple Crown Records. \nPast releases may have provided small glimpses into Free Throw’s history as a band and personal lives outside of music\, but What’s Past is Prologue is the group at their most forthcoming. The 12 tracks contained on the album detail the continuing mental health struggles of lead singer Cory Castro\, and serve as a complete story of what happens when you decide that everything in your life needs to change. \n“This album is very much about me hitting rock bottom from a mental health standpoint and the process I took in building myself back up\,” Castro explained. “With the last record\, I was trying to talk about my mental health\, but at the time I was actually going through it. The last album felt like I was yelling from the void. This time I’m looking back into the void and I’m able to understand what was going on.” \nThe beautiful anguish that often comes with personal growth and an unexpected reckoning of self is palpable from the album’s outset. Beginning with “Smokes\, Let’s Go” – a track of transition that features surprisingly delicate vocals and simple strings switches to impassioned shouts and furious instrumentals – Free Throw lead us out of the darkness and into the light. \nAs Castro explains\, the record is split into two parts. The first half of What’s Past is Prologue explores the weight of personal blame\, with singles – including the gunning and practically unstoppable “Tail Whip\, Struggle” and the limitless\, swaying tenderness of “Stay Out Of The Basement” – setting the stage for an impactful finale. As the album nears its conclusion\, “Today Is Especially Delicious” provides a tumultuous turning point\, with the band tearing through Castro’s shouted confession of “Is this what I had planned for my life/I need a hand of some type to pull me up and break this cycle of drinking for breakfast.” \nThat frank sincerity propels the album forward\, and serves as a catalyst of change for the band. As a group\, Free Throw has consistently turned their darkest days into moments that fans can sing and dance-along to\, and for the first time\, the band has arrived at this place where it’s all coming together\, and maybe this is really only just the beginning. “This is the first Free Throw record with a happy ending\,” Castro said. “The album leads to an ending of where the band stands today.
