DESCRIPTION:Karyn Oliver is part Joan Osborne\, a touch of Janis Joplin and a bit of Emmylou Harris – effortlessly oscillating from bluesy to country and back. Her musical inspirations come primarily from the eclectic mix of music to which she was exposed while growing up in the musically diverse culture of Washington\, D.C.  \nIn 2009\, Karyn moved to a town called Boring\, MD with a broken heart and a cheap guitar. It was from this place that she created her first solo album\, Red Dress\, that earned her Kerrville New Folk Finalist and Falcon Ridge Emerging Artist in 2011\, as well as 2010 Mid-Atlantic Song Contest winner. In 2011\, Oliver moved to New York City\, with a renewed heart and a better guitar. It is from this place that she created her latest solo album\, Magdalene\, and became a Kerrville New Folk Finalist for a second time in 2016.\n2017 brought Oliver to North Carolina\, where she is steeping herself in the great writers of the South\, and recorded a new album\, “A List Of Names”.\n“A List Of Names” is currently charting on both Folk (#8 in February!) and Americana radio.\n“The fire of a Folk musician is at the heart of the stories on ‘A List of Names.’ (The CD) shifts sounds\, blending diverse styles guided by the vocal drive of Karyn Oliver.”  �- The Alternate Root \n___________ \nBarry Gray has been writing songs since he was a teenager\, but only sharing them with others outside of his family for the last five years or so.  His songs are deeply personal and tap into common human emotions and struggles. He’s constantly in search of a way to capture the precious moments all humans share.  Barry was the 2018 recipient of the NC Arts Council Songwriting Fellowship.  Winning the Songwriting Fellowship allowed him to record his first record ‘Footsteps’ which he released in November2018.  ‘Footsteps’ meshes his sweet songs\, heartfelt vocals\, and tender guitar playing with perfectly placed contributions from a very talented group of NC musicians to produce a harmonious work.  You’ll hear Barry’s originals as well as covers of local and legendary artists at his shows. \n___________ \nWyatt Easterling\nA multiplatinum songwriter and producer\, Wyatt Easterling is a master storyteller and nowhere is this more apparent than on his latest record\, Divining Rod\, the top #5 Folk album in the month following its release in 2017. Back Porch Radio has also recognized Divining Rod as one of the top 25 folk albums of the year for 2017. This collection captures Easterling’s folk roots\, carving hope from heartache while spinning tales of return\, redemption\, and reclamation. With his smooth vocals and gritty lyrics\, punctuated by intricate guitar work\, Wyatt knows his way around a song and how to deliver it. DESCRIPTION:As the naturalist John Muir wrote\, “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.” It is for this reason that musician Tyler Ramsey goes into the woods when he is writing\, and why he and his wife have settled on a plot of land many miles outside of the nearest city of Asheville\, North Carolina\, to raise their young daughter. For Ramsey\, living deliberately and with a little space\, removed from distractions and the allure of needless consumption\, is how he feels most creative and at ease. And while writing For the Morning\, his first album since 2011’s The Valley Wind\, Ramsey tapped into that insulated world where imagination flourishes and sounds for mining are plentiful to create his most realized and regal work yet. \nThe Ramsey home is surrounded by mountains\, fields\, and trees\, and a small river winds through it all. Wild animals live in the family’s forest\, paying daily visits to sing their own songs. Ramsey’s hand-built music studio affords him a shelter from the cacophony or a chance to join the chorus\, depending on whether or not he has the windows open. The things he does at home are the things he sings about in his songs-neither costumed nor fabricated-and in keeping with his deliberate existence\, he clarifies that his lifestyle is not a badge to be worn but simply his preference. \n“Spending my time here in North Carolina\, swimming in the stream and walking around in the woods\, it’s part of my character as a musician\,” Ramsey says. “We live out in the country\, I built my own studio. Out here\, you have the ability to take your time and work on things slowly and comfortably. These are reasons why the music I make sounds like it does.” \nFor the Morning is filled with instrumentation connecting the listener to this setting: radiant acoustic piano and stark\, dexterous guitar fingerpicking; lilting\, poignant pedal steel and gentle\, babbling beats that mosey rather than rush. We are transplanted to Ramsey’s woods even before any words can take us there. But\, as he reveals\, the process that brought the album to life wasn’t just one sunny stroll in the pines-a newborn baby and a professional musician’s touring schedule create their own challenges. So\, it was up to Ramsey to find a balance\, and he learned to take advantage of any fleeting moments of stillness whenever possible\, while also using his time on the road as its own form of inspiration. \nFor the Morning comes together seamlessly as a cohesive work from a master songwriter and musician. “Breaking A Heart” joins the aforementioned “Dream of Home” as a standout\, with sublime piano chords and beautiful guitar playing urged along by upbeat drum tracks\, Ramsey’s pristine vocals left hanging in the air like mist. The lament of the former tune is one not uncommon in Ramsey’s work\, and he notes that many of his favorite songs-his own or by others-are dotted with sadness. “I do gravitate toward sad music\, and heartbreak is a part of the songs I write\,” he says. “Writing a song is this huge emotional release and it can be very intense. DESCRIPTION:Heart Bones is a rare thing-a new band with a long history-which heightens both expectations and standards. See\, I think that when a new thing\, a creative thing\, clicks into place just right and does so immediately on a level that you just know and feel is true all at once\, often it’s all the little ways it dares to be just a little bit off that actually makes it work. And striking this ideal ratio of The Familiar and The New is the specialist’s true skill. This is exactly how Heart Bones excels. \nIt’s not hard to imagine that they shouldn’t exist at all: Sabrina Ellis and Sean Tillmann are obviously both tirelessly bustling and juggling and geographically separated by the entire height of the middle of the country. But put on their debut album Hot Dish and as soon as Sabrina’s first line enters\, completing the inversion of Sean’s first line which has just spun your head around\, the collaboration feels inevitable. Inevitable like\, “Damn\, right. Heart Bones. Guarding the center of vulnerabilities. Why do we have things called chest cavities instead of heart bones?”  The anatomical warping of their name makes more sense given how fragile our meaty bodies actually are.  \nBoth in concept and approach\, Sean and Sabrina share many commonalities: long histories of genre warping and adopting evolving personas to embody these progressions\, celebrating wildness and theatricality night after night throughout grueling tour schedules. And all this expressed in the persistent tension of dark themes made melodious\, a move that the true specialist knows will always make the struggle for balance feel deep and real.  \nIn hindsight\, Sean’s evolution seems so linear: his earliest band Calvin Krime dared to be fun in a subculture steeped in angst. And after it disbanded\, he sanded down the angular edges and stepped more clearly into a front-man role in Sean Na Na. But it was only the emergence of his alter ego Har Mar Superstar-at first pretending to be his own brother-that gave him the cover to risk fully expressing himself freely. The depths of his impulses came to play on the surface; the constant tensions of silliness and sincerity struck as immediate and true and deeply felt and always fun; stripping down to one’s skivvies isn’t only sexy\, it’s sexy because of the openness and vulnerability it represents. Over the course of 20 years\, it evolved from beats on a MiniDisc player to a seven-piece soul revue without the continuity of his character ever coming across as inconsistent\, a testimony to the acumen of his voice and his knack for hooks. \nAnd down in Austin\, Sabrina was carving their own unique path and persona. They perfected their glam snarl for a decade with the anthemic and brassy A Giant Dog\, their performances cocky\, provocative\, and raw. With her thoughtful narrative voice\, Palehound singer/songwriter Ellen Kempner imbues each song on the album with a radical sensitivity\, an unchecked depth of feeling that ultimately sparks a greater open-heartedness within the listener. \nCo-produced by Kempner and Gabe Wax (Beirut\, Soccer Mommy)\, Black Friday follows 2017’s A Place I’ll Always Go — a widely acclaimed release that landed on many year-end best-of lists. In creating the album\, Kempner and her bandmates Jesse Weiss (drums) and Larz Brogan (bass) recorded at Panoramic House in Stinson Beach\, California\, tracking most of the songs live and breathing a new vitality into Palehound’s elegantly detailed sound. \nUnrestrained in emotion but subtle in sonic flourish\, Black Friday opens with the stripped-back intensity of “Company\,” the first of many songs conveying a profound longing for a lost friend. From there\, Palehound shift into the joyful wonder of “Aaron\,” a song Kempner wrote for her partner in the midst of his transitioning process. “It’s about the past year of him coming out and me helping him through that\, and just watching him grow so much\,” she says. With her hushed yet urgent vocals\, Kempner reveals her ability to draw so much power from a single word\, turning “Aaron” into an indelibly tender expression of devotion and love. \nPalehound examine the intricacies of friendship and partnership all throughout Black Friday\, handling the subject with a level of attention rarely found in pop songs. On the quietly hypnotic title track\, Kempner captures the specific ache of uneven emotional investment between friends\, framing her plaintive acceptance in particularly barbed lyrics (“You’re Black Friday and I’m going to the mall”). And on “Worthy\,” Palehound speak to the challenge of navigating self-confidence issues in relationships\, and delicately showcase Kempner’s lyrical finesse (“And I’ve won over your mother\, darling/And I’ve won over your sister too/And I won over your father\, darling/And I still don’t feel worthy of you”). \nWhile much of Black Friday unfolds with palpable compassion\, “Killer” takes on a vengeful mood as Kempner recounts a fantasy of doing away with a friend’s abuser. “It came from being so fed up with people who feel like they can take advantage of others sexually or physically or emotionally to get ahead or get what they want\, and just wanting to destroy that culture in general\,” she says. DESCRIPTION:Mattson 2 are Jared and Jonathan Mattson\, identical twins who have been collaborating almost literally from birth. They grew up in San Diego\, CA\, where in middle school they started playing music; decades later\, they had earned Master’s degrees in Music from the University of California Irvine. They formed their psych-jazz group Mattson 2 in 2003\, and released their first album\, Introducing the Mattson 2\, in 2009. Subsequent releases include collabs with pro skaters Ray Barbee\, Tommy Guerrero\, Farmer Dave (of Kurt Vile)\, and Money Mark (of Beastie Boys). Since then\, they’ve released an album with Chaz Bear – 2017’s Star Stuff\, recorded under the name Chaz Bundick Meets The Mattson 2 and which peaked at #1 on the Billboard contemporary jazz charts – and reinterpreted Coltrane’s legendary A Love Supreme which Jazz Times said “manages to hold Coltrane’s revered album in the highest esteem while absolutely shredding it to pieces.” Paradise\, their 8th record\, marks the first time that the brothers have added vocals. SUMMARY:Black Lips
DESCRIPTION:The story of the Black Lips began in Dunwoody\, Georgia\, a quiet\, conservative suburb of Atlanta\, in the year 1999. Born of a mutual love of Link Wray\, The Stooges\, and The Ramones\, and sealed through a shared dedication to defiance\, the band formed after childhood friends Jared Swilley and Cole Alexander were kicked out of Dunwoody High for separate\, yet equally bad\, behavior. The former classmates took their love of music and restless energy and channeled it into their newly found free time\, and joined by friends Ben Eberbaugh and Joe Bradley\, the Black Lips started playing shows around Atlanta\, at house parties and bars. They spent this time honing their sound – garage rock infused with blues\, psychedelia\, and punk\, plus a healthy dose of reckless abandon – and released their first 7-inch\, “Ain’t Coming Back\,” in 2002 on Die Slaughterhouse records (named in homage to the flophouse den they called home). Shortly before the band was set to head out on their first ever national tour\, Eberbaugh was tragically killed by a drunk driver. Devastated but determined to carry on in Eberbaugh’s honor\, the Black Lips hit the road as a trio just a few days later. \nIt’s been 15 years\, but that passionate dedication to touring has never left the band. The Black Lips have released eight full-length albums since that first tour\, and have traveled the country and the world extensively\, making a name for themselves as an electrifying\, must-see live act. It helps that the same mischievous spirit that helped speed up their exit from the educational system is still very much alive\, thriving in its new environment on stage\, resplendent with punk rock theatrics and miscellaneous bodily fluids\, amongst other things. The band’s energy and unique “flower punk” sound helped them build a rabid fan base\, and after releasing their first two albums through Bomp!\, they put out the critically celebrated Let It Bloom on In The Red records. DESCRIPTION:The first time one of his friend’s fathers saw singer/songwriter Tim Barry perform\, he summed up his thoughts with a Yogi Berra-worthy declaration: “You’re old-timey in a modern way.” \nThat’s a near perfect description for the artist who sums up his latest solo release\, Lost & Rootless in a single word: WOODEN. “That’s the feel that I was going for when I picked the songs\,” says Barry. “There’s violin\, voice\, a wooden resonator guitar…there’s a very subtle electric bass on one track\, but otherwise I wanted to do a wooden record.” \nTo create that stripped-down\, earthy sound\, Barry (along with sometime accompanists Josh Small and sister Caitlin Hunt) selected an equally wooden venue: his own shed\, mic’d up and MacGyvered with blankets\, bits of carpet\, and pallets for soundproofing. This gave Tim an opportunity musicians are rarely afforded: the ability to record any moment that inspiration struck\, without racing the clock or pulling out the wallet. “It’s not always relaxing in the studio unless you have so much loot you don’t care how much time you spend in there. To be able to go into my shivering cold shed and play music whenever it hit me was pretty awesome\,” he says. \nOpening Lost & Rootless with the forlorn “No News From The North” (drawn from 2005’s solo debut Laurel Street Demos\, one of which he has re-recorded for each subsequent release)\, Barry then unspools twelve more songs toggling between spare soliloquies and toe-tappers\, telling tales of sadness and of celebration\, and portraying the narrator as both partier and poet. \nWith a cohesive musical feel\, a vivid cast of characters\, and not one but two mentions of his own daughter Lela Jane\, one might think there’s a larger tale being told here. Don’t spend too much time trying to tie it all together\, though: “I’m not bright enough to make a concept record!” Tim exclaims. “Going all the way back to the early days of my music\, I just write what’s around me\, what I feel\, who I know.” \nThe album is thick with examples of that that autobiographical (and auto-geographical) writing style\, featuring references to Richmond’s Laurel Street\, its Manchester neighborhood\, and the James River (each also calling back to Barry’s past recordings). His surroundings also set the scene for one of the album’s story song highlights: “Solid Gone\,” about one family’s fight to survive outside the confines of the law. Tim notes that the subject matter reads a bit like a country music stereotype\, “But that’s what it’s about: drugs\, guns and family. I’m not sure the average fan of Willie Nelson would like it\, but it’s what happens in the state of Virginia.” \nThe one song on the album that’s not drawn from Barry’s background or environment is a reverent cover of “Clay Pigeons” by the late Austin musician Blaze Foley (the subject of the Lucinda Williams song “Drunken Angel”). Originally turned on to the song via a mixtape from a friend\, Tim quickly became obsessed. “It was just TOO GOOD\,” he stresses. Seeing that the song only had a paltry number of YouTube views\, “I started asking everyone I knew if they knew the song. Only two people out of maybe twenty did\, so I said\, “F*** that\, I’m recording this!” \nOf course\, the challenges of making an album don’t end with the recording: figuring out the best order for the songs is another chore entirely. In keeping with his old-school approach to creating the music\, Tim took to a slightly vintage sequencing method. “My favorite part of the entire recording project is using cassette to sequence the album\,” he says. “I really believe in listening beginning to end\, and it forces me to listen all the way through. DESCRIPTION:Lifelong friends and deep-north natives\, musical group Michigan Rattlers play heavy- hearted folk-rock with an aching dose of Midwestern nice. Graham Young (guitar)\, Adam Reed (upright bass)\, and Christian Wilder (piano) began writing music and performing together in their Northern Michigan high school. \n“Petoskey is a small place. Beautiful\, but secluded. It’s hard to start a musical career in a place where there are more deer than people.” \nStill\, they regularly played every bar\, cafe\, and stage in town\, developing a musical chemistry informed by the likes of AC/DC\, Creedence Clearwater Revival\, Bob Seger\, and more. \nAfter a few years apart\, Reed and Young settled down in Los Angeles\, recorded a short demo\, and began playing locally. The demo found its way into the hands of super-producer Johnny K (Plain White T’s\, 3 Doors Down)\, and they cut the bulk of their first EP at NRG Studios in just one day. \n“My favorite music is recorded that way\,” continues Reed. “You get in a room\, plug in\, and cut songs live. The energy of the recording comes directly from the physical performance\, and it puts the listener into that specific time and place.” \nThis self-titled Michigan Rattlers EP attracted glowing reviews from No Depression\, Bluegrass Situation\, B3 Science\, and Rolling Stone\, who named the band one of their “Ten New Country Artists You Need To Know” in 2016. They spent the rest of that year and much of the next touring in support of this release. \nIn September 2017\, Pianist Christian Wilder was added to the band’s lineup. Now a trio\, the group headed into the studio to record their newest EP\, Wasting the Meaning. Comprised of three cover songs\, the project was conceived as a way to explore deeper into the recording process and pay homage to some of their favorite songwriters. \nCurrently\, the group is hard at work recording their first full-length release. Deconstructed and repurposed\, these artifacts manifest as a playfully ironic nod to early 2000’s electro pop and indie rock.  \nFor the band\, Florida Guilt is a cathartic release. The decrepit state\, harboring a decaying population\, embodies the ethos of McDermott’s religious upbringing. DESCRIPTION:Get Gone\, the potent debut album by the Shreveport\, Louisiana natives in Seratones\, makes a strong case that this little-known corner of the state is fertile ground\, musically speaking. A.J. Haynes (vocals)\, Connor Davis (guitar)\, Adam Davis (bass) and Jesse Gabriel (drums) serve up a combination of Southern musicality\, garage rock ferocity\, and general badassery. \nHaynes’s powerful singing voice\, first honed at Brownsville Baptist Church in Columbia\, Louisiana at age 6\, rings across every track. Davis’s bass and Gabriel’s playing propel every song with the grit\, energy\, and rawness of punk\, the feeling of soul\, and occasionally\, a little jazz swing. The other Davis offers a clinic in guitar riffs\, from swaggering blues to searing interstellar leads. \nRecorded at Dial Back Sound studios in Mississippi\, Get Gone is all live takes\, a portrait of the Seratones in their element. Add the soul and swagger of a juke joint with the electricity coursing through a basement DIY show\, and you’d begin to approach the experience of seeing this foursome live. The well-paced\, multi-faceted set showcases a band dedicated to sonic exploration. “Don’t Need It\,” which opens with a muscular swing and tight guitar lines\, builds into a monster finish with a nasty corkscrew of a guitar line. “Sun\,” a brawny thrasher\, courses with huge\, raw voltage riffs. “Chandelier\,” a mid-tempo burner and vocal workout by Haynes\, goes from croon to a crescendo that would shake any crystals hanging from the rafters. \nShared history in the city’s music scene brought the Seratones together a few years ago. All four had played together with one or another in various local punk bands\, bonding through all-ages basement shows\, gigs at skate parks and BBQ joints\, and late nights listening to jazz and blues records. In a city of multiple genres\, no fixed musical identity and a flood of cover bands\, these adventurous musicians carved out their own path\, personifying the do-it-yourself ethos. The group was quickly recognized after forming\, winning the Louisiana Music Prize in 2013. \n“Shreveport is always shifting its identity\,” says Haynes. “You can do a lot of different things when it seems like every band is its own genre.” \nSeratones’s music\, created with collaborative songwriting and spontaneous creativity\, is certainly their own\, due perhaps in part to Shreveport’s unique sonic geography. The city sits at a nexus roughly equidistant from Memphis soul\, Mississippi Delta Blues\, and New Orleans jazz\, with Texas swing located just over the nearby state border. The band’s sound draws from those touch points and more\, ranging from Black Sabbath’s Paranoid to Kind of Blue. They’ll happily connect the dots between Ornette Coleman and Jello Biafra. \nSeratones have different names for the amalgamation of styles found on their debut: Their own “expression of freedom\,” music that’s “all about waking people up\,” a safe space to feel what you want. DESCRIPTION:On his Polyvinyl debut ​Born Hot​\, Chris Farren opens with a question he’ll spend much of the album trying to answer: ​Why do I feel out of place in my own outer space? ​Telegraphing his inner narrative with a childlike candor\, the Florida-born artist lays bare his most intense anxieties and-in the very same breath-documents the mildly soul-crushing minutiae of everyday life: the strange indecency of blasting AC/DC bangers through an iPhone speaker\, the inexplicable bleakness of a Starbucks franchise tucked inside a Target. But with his irrepressible sense of humor and utter lack of self-seriousness\, Farren defuses the pain of even the deepest insecurity\, gracefully paving the way for pure pop catharsis. \nOn ​Born Hot​ Farren fully embodies the sensitive-goofball dichotomy found in all his work\, especially his exuberant live show: a solo performance in which he plays to live-recorded backing tracks while projecting purposely wacky visuals (his own face duplicated thousands of times\, text that reads “ANOTHER PERFECT SET” at the end of each closing song). By the same token\, Farren went full-on tongue-in-cheek in choosing ​Born Hot​’s title and cover art-a crudely drawn self-portrait that captures him lounging shirtless\, looking every bit the ’70s-pop Lothario. \n“In my lyrics there’s so much self-examination that teeters on self-loathing\, and I like to juxtapose that with an aesthetic that’s completely the opposite\,” says Farren. “It’s a defense mechanism\, because I feel embarrassed talking about my feelings so very plainly\, but at the same time I also just find the idea of having that much self-confidence really funny.” \nIn the making of ​Born Hot​\, Farren recorded in his L.A. apartment and worked entirely on his own\, embedding his inventive take on classic power-pop with flashes of folk and punk and ’50s doo-wop. On “Love Theme from ‘Born Hot\,’” he slips into a sunny synth-pop reverie\, bringing bouncy rhythms and radiant synth tones to a heart-on-sleeve message of romantic determination. “I wrote that when two different couples in my life were splitting up\, and I felt kind of rattled but also so lucky to have my wife\,” says Farren. Moodier and more darkly charged\, “Search 4 Me” reveals his struggle to live in the present\, articulating his anxiety in pieces of fragile poetry (e.g.\, “And you glared at me so loudly that I burst into confetti”).
