DESCRIPTION:The National Parks was formed by frontman Brady Parks in 2013 in Provo\, Utah. To date\, the band has independently released three full-length albums (and a standalone single\, “As We Ran”)\, which together have amassed more than 90 million streams and garnered praise from press outlets such as NPR’s All Songs Considered\, Paste\, CMT Edge\, Baeble Music\, and Pop Matters. DESCRIPTION:Andy Cabic’s musical being is\, like many curious 21st century musicians\, shaped and sustained by divergent tangents. If he’s not crafting a melancholy folk rock diamond in his Northern California studio\, he’s moving a dance floor with bossa nova and house DJ sets\, or helping curate a compilation of Japanese City Pop.   \nWhat’s magic about this new Vetiver LP Up On High is the way these tangents color the ten songs without undermining a distinct move to more elemental\, spacious and natural arrangements. At the heart of each of these ten songs is Cabic’s voice: sweet\, tender and weathered-a welcome and soothing old friend if ever there was one. There are other familiar friends: the album also features longtime engineer and collaborator Thom Monahan and the same resourceful and versatile band that helped Cabic make the more dense and layered Complete Strangers from 2015. \nUp On High was written on acoustic guitar. Having moved twice since Complete Strangers\, increasingly accustomed to a life in and out of boxes\, it was the easiest instrument to reach for in moments of inspiration. The basic tracking of the album took place over a few Spring days at a friend’s house in the high desert of California.  This simple set-up captured the organic immediacy of a roomful of friends playing together on the floor.  It’s alive and ever so subtly crackling with the intensity of a band working together\, teasing out the melody and rhythms of songs with warmth and intimacy. Cabic and Monahan took the fruits of this session to Los Angeles and finished the album at Monahan’s studio over the summer as other friends popped by to lend their talents. \nThis album reflects the world that Cabic created and lives in: Jorge Ben phrasings peek out from behind Tom Petty’s Wildflowers outtakes\, a gentle jangle lifts whispers of REM’s Murmur on a breeze up from Compass Point Studios. But Up On High is most clearly Cabic and his band inhabiting the realm the band was born in-sleek\, economical\, soulful\, and sometimes sadness-tinged melodies riding on the gentle choogle and sway of an ensemble moving in beautiful unison. DESCRIPTION:“Break the rules you think you are bound by.” \nThat’s the recurring sentiment Lætitia Tamko carried with her through the writing and recording of her second album under the Vagabon moniker. Her first\, 2017’s Infinite Worlds\, was an indie breakthrough that put her on the map\, prompting Tamko to tour around the world and quit her job in electrical/computer engineering to pursue a career in music full-time. Tamko’s self-titled Nonesuch Records debut finds her in a state of creative expansion\, leaning fully into some of the experimental instincts she flirted with on the previous album. This time around\, she’s throwing genre to the wind. Vagabon is a vibrant culmination of influences\, emotional landscapes\, and moods; a colorful and masterful statement by an artist and producer stepping into her own. \n“I was in a pretty tortured headspace when I returned home from touring Infinite Worlds. That album contained some of the first songs I’d ever written\, and more people than I could have ever imagined heard it\,” Tamko says. “I was proud to become a full-time musician and recognized how rare of a thing that is\, but was also debilitated by the very same fact. Fear overtook me and I couldn’t write. I felt stagnant and unsure of what to do next.” \nThat anxiety eventually thawed and gave way to a newfound sense of freedom as Tamko began to focus less on industry pressures and more on honing her craft as a songwriter and producer. “With this album\, I wanted to impress myself\,” Tamko says. “I wanted to be curious and I wanted to make big leaps as a producer. All I had access to on the road was my computer and Logic\, so naturally I started writing songs electronically with what was at hand.” \nVagabon was written and produced entirely by Tamko. Guitar-driven melodies are largely absent\, and in their place we are treated to a collection of songs buoyed by hybridized analog and digital arrangements. While Infinite Worlds situated the last Vagabon project in the realm of “indie rock\,” Vagabon is not easily defined. Grounded by Tamko’s expressive voice and knack for unique melodies\, the album flits between genres\, never lingering too long on one particular sensibility. \nLead single “Flood” exemplifies this growth; the production ebbs like a gentle tide before a cavernous drumbeat kicks in and the tone shifts completely. “I know\, even if I run from it I’m still in it\,” Tamko sings over and over again\, her capacious voice conveying a sense of resignation in the face of an external force beyond her control. The chorus is a hypnotic bit of pop alchemy that lingers long after the runtime. \n“The drums and vocal forward approach I took on the new album is drawn from my love for rap and hip-hop production as well as R&B and folk storytelling. That’s the music that got me excited about writing again\,” Tamko says. In addition to those influences\, the West African guitars and rhythms that soundtracked much of her childhood seep into moments throughout this album\, in no place more obvious than on “In A Bind.” The song opens with a fingerpicked melody as Tamko sings to someone she’s been orbiting for a while but can’t quite reach. “I know that I was gone a lot last year/ But I hoped you’d still be here\,” she sings. DESCRIPTION:Honey Magpie:\nKnown for vocal harmonies\, classical string instruments\, and nature-inspired lyrics\,  Honey Magpie is fronted by Millennial singer-songwriters Rachael Hurwitz (guitar\, keys) and Pippa Hoover (cello). Their sound invites comparisons to all-female folk groups like I’m With Her\, but draws more influence from pop than bluegrass or old time.  \nThe band formed in 2015\, when all members were in their mid-to-late 20s. Despite what felt like a late start in music\, Honey Magpie pursued performing and recording wholeheartedly. They gained early success in the Triangle when they won the band contest at the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival in 2015.  They released their debut album Honey Magpie in 2017\, and have since been featured in the Oak City Sessions video series and on WUNC’s The State of Things. Their single “Undecided” premiered on Pop Matters in January 2020.   \nTheir second album Midnight Morning draws from a richer range of musical influences and boasts a higher production level than Honey Magpie.  Listeners will recognize elements of 90s rock\, 60s pop\, country\, and femme-fronted indie pop\, supported by a full rhythm section of bass\, drums\, guitar\, and keys. DESCRIPTION:Founded in Athens\, Georgia by twin brothers Reid and Blaze Bateh\, and bassist William Brookshire\, Bambara have been steadily attracting attention since the release of their 2013 debut. Earning praise from places like Pitchfork\, NPR\, VICE\, Bandcamp\, Spin\, DIY\, BrooklynVegan and The Quietus\, and touring non-stop in the US and Europe with like-minded artists like IDLES\, METZ\, Girl Band and Daughters\, the band released their most celebrated album to date in 2018 with Shadow On Everything\, a release that NPR dubbed a “mesmerizing western\, gothic opus.” Today\, Bambara are announcing their follow up Stray (due out via Wharf Cat on February 14th\, 2020)\, with the premiere of the album’s first single “Serafina” on the FADER. \nA thunderous squall of a song\, “Serafina” provides an arresting introduction to the album. Channelling the anarchic energy of The Birthday Party and Gun Club\, in combination with Reid Blateh’s dramatic lyrical style the track imbues the story of a pair suburban misfits with apocalyptic weight. Bambara’s rhythm section rattles and bursts behind a frantic descending guitar lead as Reid\, in a fraying baritone\, weaves a tale set in his home state of Georgia that acknowledges the history of the place with subtle Civil War allusions\, while conjuring an immediate atmosphere of backwoods unease. As Reid tells to FADER\, it’s a song built to communicate an unhinged energy. \n“Stray is a death-obsessed album\,” says Reid. “Most of the songs are about different characters’ futile attempts at living meaningful lives under the weight of imminent annihilation. I wanted “Serafina” to feel different. I wanted the song to radiate a sort of wild-eyed hope. A youthful disregard for death itself. Serafina and Sadie live exactly how they want to live\, exploring their love for one another before a backdrop of flames. The knowledge of their own mortality takes nothing from their enthusiasm for life. If anything\, they see it as a challenge they might one day overcome together. When they say\, “We’ll never die” I want it to feel like they might actually have a shot.” \nBambara are embarking on a UK tour that begins in Bristol at the Simple Things Festival on October 19th. DESCRIPTION:Karyn Oliver is part Joan Osborne\, a touch of Janis Joplin and a bit of Emmylou Harris – effortlessly oscillating from bluesy to country and back. Her musical inspirations come primarily from the eclectic mix of music to which she was exposed while growing up in the musically diverse culture of Washington\, D.C.  \nIn 2009\, Karyn moved to a town called Boring\, MD with a broken heart and a cheap guitar. It was from this place that she created her first solo album\, Red Dress\, that earned her Kerrville New Folk Finalist and Falcon Ridge Emerging Artist in 2011\, as well as 2010 Mid-Atlantic Song Contest winner. In 2011\, Oliver moved to New York City\, with a renewed heart and a better guitar. It is from this place that she created her latest solo album\, Magdalene\, and became a Kerrville New Folk Finalist for a second time in 2016.\n2017 brought Oliver to North Carolina\, where she is steeping herself in the great writers of the South\, and recorded a new album\, “A List Of Names”.\n“A List Of Names” is currently charting on both Folk (#8 in February!) and Americana radio.\n“The fire of a Folk musician is at the heart of the stories on ‘A List of Names.’ (The CD) shifts sounds\, blending diverse styles guided by the vocal drive of Karyn Oliver.”  �- The Alternate Root \n___________ \nBarry Gray has been writing songs since he was a teenager\, but only sharing them with others outside of his family for the last five years or so.  His songs are deeply personal and tap into common human emotions and struggles.  Making a difference in the lives of those close to you\, both while you’re here and after you’re gone\, is a common theme.   He’s constantly in search of a way to capture the precious moments all humans share.  Barry was the 2018 recipient of the NC Arts Council Songwriting Fellowship.  Winning the Songwriting Fellowship allowed him to record his first record ‘Footsteps’ which he released in November2018.  ‘Footsteps’ meshes his sweet songs\, heartfelt vocals\, and tender guitar playing with perfectly placed contributions from a very talented group of NC musicians to produce a harmonious work.  You’ll hear Barry’s originals as well as covers of local and legendary artists at his shows. \n___________ \nWyatt Easterling\nA multiplatinum songwriter and producer\, Wyatt Easterling is a master storyteller and nowhere is this more apparent than on his latest record\, Divining Rod\, the top #5 Folk album in the month following its release in 2017. Back Porch Radio has also recognized Divining Rod as one of the top 25 folk albums of the year for 2017. This collection captures Easterling’s folk roots\, carving hope from heartache while spinning tales of return\, redemption\, and reclamation. With his smooth vocals and gritty lyrics\, punctuated by intricate guitar work\, Wyatt knows his way around a song and how to deliver it. DESCRIPTION:As the naturalist John Muir wrote\, “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.” It is for this reason that musician Tyler Ramsey goes into the woods when he is writing\, and why he and his wife have settled on a plot of land many miles outside of the nearest city of Asheville\, North Carolina\, to raise their young daughter. For Ramsey\, living deliberately and with a little space\, removed from distractions and the allure of needless consumption\, is how he feels most creative and at ease. And while writing For the Morning\, his first album since 2011’s The Valley Wind\, Ramsey tapped into that insulated world where imagination flourishes and sounds for mining are plentiful to create his most realized and regal work yet. \nThe Ramsey home is surrounded by mountains\, fields\, and trees\, and a small river winds through it all. Wild animals live in the family’s forest\, paying daily visits to sing their own songs. Ramsey’s hand-built music studio affords him a shelter from the cacophony or a chance to join the chorus\, depending on whether or not he has the windows open. The things he does at home are the things he sings about in his songs-neither costumed nor fabricated-and in keeping with his deliberate existence\, he clarifies that his lifestyle is not a badge to be worn but simply his preference. \n“Spending my time here in North Carolina\, swimming in the stream and walking around in the woods\, it’s part of my character as a musician\,” Ramsey says. “We live out in the country\, I built my own studio. Out here\, you have the ability to take your time and work on things slowly and comfortably. These are reasons why the music I make sounds like it does.” \nFor the Morning is filled with instrumentation connecting the listener to this setting: radiant acoustic piano and stark\, dexterous guitar fingerpicking; lilting\, poignant pedal steel and gentle\, babbling beats that mosey rather than rush. We are transplanted to Ramsey’s woods even before any words can take us there. But\, as he reveals\, the process that brought the album to life wasn’t just one sunny stroll in the pines-a newborn baby and a professional musician’s touring schedule create their own challenges. So\, it was up to Ramsey to find a balance\, and he learned to take advantage of any fleeting moments of stillness whenever possible\, while also using his time on the road as its own form of inspiration. \nFor the Morning comes together seamlessly as a cohesive work from a master songwriter and musician. “Breaking A Heart” joins the aforementioned “Dream of Home” as a standout\, with sublime piano chords and beautiful guitar playing urged along by upbeat drum tracks\, Ramsey’s pristine vocals left hanging in the air like mist. The lament of the former tune is one not uncommon in Ramsey’s work\, and he notes that many of his favorite songs-his own or by others-are dotted with sadness. “I do gravitate toward sad music\, and heartbreak is a part of the songs I write\,” he says. “Writing a song is this huge emotional release and it can be very intense. DESCRIPTION:Heart Bones is a rare thing-a new band with a long history-which heightens both expectations and standards. See\, I think that when a new thing\, a creative thing\, clicks into place just right and does so immediately on a level that you just know and feel is true all at once\, often it’s all the little ways it dares to be just a little bit off that actually makes it work. And striking this ideal ratio of The Familiar and The New is the specialist’s true skill. This is exactly how Heart Bones excels. \nIt’s not hard to imagine that they shouldn’t exist at all: Sabrina Ellis and Sean Tillmann are obviously both tirelessly bustling and juggling and geographically separated by the entire height of the middle of the country. But put on their debut album Hot Dish and as soon as Sabrina’s first line enters\, completing the inversion of Sean’s first line which has just spun your head around\, the collaboration feels inevitable. Inevitable like\, “Damn\, right. Heart Bones. Guarding the center of vulnerabilities. Why do we have things called chest cavities instead of heart bones?”  The anatomical warping of their name makes more sense given how fragile our meaty bodies actually are.  \nBoth in concept and approach\, Sean and Sabrina share many commonalities: long histories of genre warping and adopting evolving personas to embody these progressions\, celebrating wildness and theatricality night after night throughout grueling tour schedules. And all this expressed in the persistent tension of dark themes made melodious\, a move that the true specialist knows will always make the struggle for balance feel deep and real.  \nIn hindsight\, Sean’s evolution seems so linear: his earliest band Calvin Krime dared to be fun in a subculture steeped in angst. And after it disbanded\, he sanded down the angular edges and stepped more clearly into a front-man role in Sean Na Na. But it was only the emergence of his alter ego Har Mar Superstar-at first pretending to be his own brother-that gave him the cover to risk fully expressing himself freely. The depths of his impulses came to play on the surface; the constant tensions of silliness and sincerity struck as immediate and true and deeply felt and always fun; stripping down to one’s skivvies isn’t only sexy\, it’s sexy because of the openness and vulnerability it represents. Over the course of 20 years\, it evolved from beats on a MiniDisc player to a seven-piece soul revue without the continuity of his character ever coming across as inconsistent\, a testimony to the acumen of his voice and his knack for hooks. \nAnd down in Austin\, Sabrina was carving their own unique path and persona. They perfected their glam snarl for a decade with the anthemic and brassy A Giant Dog\, their performances cocky\, provocative\, and raw.
