DESCRIPTION:Dylan LeBlanc is engaging and soft-spoken in person\, yet his striking new album Renegade reflects the power of his live show – one that he simply describes as rock ‘n’ roll. While the album was recorded in just 10 days and tracked in three\, the intensity of the project marks the culmination of more than a decade on the road.  \n“I like the idea of a renegade – branching off from society or from the structure of the way our world is designed\,” he says of Renegade\, his first album for ATO Records. “It felt right to call it that. I wanted to write about the crueler\, nasty aspects of the world and life.”  \nLeBlanc’s observations are woven through Renegade\, though he’s more interested in telling the story than judging the characters for their decisions. The title track\, he says\, is “about troubled cocky young men charming young women who were intrigued by that way of life\, only for it to end in tragedy. I saw this countless times growing up.” Later he writes about his personal efforts to become a stronger person in “Born Again\,” after a childhood of being bullied for his long hair and an adolescence marked by insecurity\, fear\, and anger.  \nLeBlanc considers the new album a departure from his past work\, but only because there’s more of an edge to these sessions\, recorded with Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb in Nashville’s Studio A. This time around\, LeBlanc primarily stayed plugged in for the sessions\, giving Renegade a Tom Petty feel\, charged with a streak of ’80s rock. “I never really played electric guitar live in the studio like that\,” he says. “I’m so used to the rhythmic\, acoustic thing. It was just like playing in a show.”  \nSince 2016\, LeBlanc has toured with Alabama rock group The Pollies as his backing band. He’s known most of the band members since childhood\, growing up together in Muscle Shoals\, and considers them his closest friends. Because they’ve been playing songs on Renegade live\, it was only logical that the Pollies backed up LeBlanc in the studio\, too.  \n“They bring out a comfort in me to let loose\, let myself go a little bit more\, and get more immersed in the music\,” LeBlanc says. “It’s such a telekinetic thing\, because we’ve known each other for so long and we’ve played together a lot. It’s a band of guys that I know musically really well. They let me express myself creatively in a way that I probably wouldn’t be comfortable enough to do before.”  \nThese expressions are sometimes borne out of conversations with strangers\, such as the woman in “Domino” who shared her stories of prostitution with him\, or the man he met in New Orleans who inspired “Bang Bang Bang\,” whose life was dramatically altered by gun violence. On a more personal note\, “Damned” finds LeBlanc trying to wrap his head around religion\, while “I See It in Your Eyes” and “Lone Rider” capture the complications of relationships. One of the album’s quieter moments\, “Sand and Stone” is an effort to live in the present moment. As Renegade draws to a close\, “Magenta” evokes the slave history of a farm in Louisiana\, while “Honor Among Thieves” makes a powerful statement about ancestry\, immigration laws\, and land rights.  \nLeBlanc’s previous album\, 2016’s Cautionary Tale\, offered a satisfyingly mellow vibe in line with the ’70s musicians who influenced him. However\, once he started touring with the Pollies\, the sonic textures began to shift. Yet\, one of the strongest ties between the albums is LeBlanc’s blossoming confidence as a singer. SUMMARY:Indigo De Souza
DESCRIPTION:Indigo De Souza is a multifaceted artist and band based in Asheville\, North Carolina. The band is fronted by Indigo as lead singer and guitarist\, and backed by Owen Stone (bass)\, Ethan Baechtold (guitar)\, and ​Jake Lenderman (drums)​. Encouraged and supported by her mother\, Kimberly Oberhammer\, Indigo began writing music when she was 9 years old and quickly began to embody her art\, taking to the stage at age 11. Since then\, she’s been writing heart-wrenching lyrics descriptive and expressive of her own internal landscape’s interaction with the power of interpersonal relationships- from caregivers to romantic interests. This is all highlighted in the band’s first full album\, ​I Love My Mom\, ​recorded by Colin Miller in 2018. Both the music and her artful lines captivate listeners and provide solidarity in the pain and beauty felt in the world\, providing an intimate and powerful listening experience. After her performance in early 2019\, Audiotree Live described the 22 year old as a\, “punky indie pop songwriter whose eloquent\, passionate persona sits at the forefront of her snarky tunes. She transfixes you with unabashed\, meaningful stories put to effortlessly catchy hooks and explosive instrumentation.”  \nOutside of the indie pop band\, Indigo also fronts a neo-soul project\, Icky Bricketts\, with Ethan Baechtold. Ethan and Indigo have co-written these songs and lovingly refer to the project as their “brain-child”. Icky Bricketts began as a recording project\, but has recently grown to include a dynamic and energizing live band. DESCRIPTION:Andy Cabic’s musical being is\, like many curious 21st century musicians\, shaped and sustained by divergent tangents. If he’s not crafting a melancholy folk rock diamond in his Northern California studio\, he’s moving a dance floor with bossa nova and house DJ sets\, or helping curate a compilation of Japanese City Pop.   \nWhat’s magic about this new Vetiver LP Up On High is the way these tangents color the ten songs without undermining a distinct move to more elemental\, spacious and natural arrangements. At the heart of each of these ten songs is Cabic’s voice: sweet\, tender and weathered-a welcome and soothing old friend if ever there was one. There are other familiar friends: the album also features longtime engineer and collaborator Thom Monahan and the same resourceful and versatile band that helped Cabic make the more dense and layered Complete Strangers from 2015. \nUp On High was written on acoustic guitar. Having moved twice since Complete Strangers\, increasingly accustomed to a life in and out of boxes\, it was the easiest instrument to reach for in moments of inspiration. The basic tracking of the album took place over a few Spring days at a friend’s house in the high desert of California.  This simple set-up captured the organic immediacy of a roomful of friends playing together on the floor.  It’s alive and ever so subtly crackling with the intensity of a band working together\, teasing out the melody and rhythms of songs with warmth and intimacy. Cabic and Monahan took the fruits of this session to Los Angeles and finished the album at Monahan’s studio over the summer as other friends popped by to lend their talents. \nThis album reflects the world that Cabic created and lives in: Jorge Ben phrasings peek out from behind Tom Petty’s Wildflowers outtakes\, a gentle jangle lifts whispers of REM’s Murmur on a breeze up from Compass Point Studios. But Up On High is most clearly Cabic and his band inhabiting the realm the band was born in-sleek\, economical\, soulful\, and sometimes sadness-tinged melodies riding on the gentle choogle and sway of an ensemble moving in beautiful unison. DESCRIPTION:“Break the rules you think you are bound by.” \nThat’s the recurring sentiment Lætitia Tamko carried with her through the writing and recording of her second album under the Vagabon moniker. Her first\, 2017’s Infinite Worlds\, was an indie breakthrough that put her on the map\, prompting Tamko to tour around the world and quit her job in electrical/computer engineering to pursue a career in music full-time. Tamko’s self-titled Nonesuch Records debut finds her in a state of creative expansion\, leaning fully into some of the experimental instincts she flirted with on the previous album. This time around\, she’s throwing genre to the wind. Vagabon is a vibrant culmination of influences\, emotional landscapes\, and moods; a colorful and masterful statement by an artist and producer stepping into her own. \n“I was in a pretty tortured headspace when I returned home from touring Infinite Worlds. That album contained some of the first songs I’d ever written\, and more people than I could have ever imagined heard it\,” Tamko says. “I was proud to become a full-time musician and recognized how rare of a thing that is\, but was also debilitated by the very same fact. Fear overtook me and I couldn’t write. I felt stagnant and unsure of what to do next.” \nThat anxiety eventually thawed and gave way to a newfound sense of freedom as Tamko began to focus less on industry pressures and more on honing her craft as a songwriter and producer. “With this album\, I wanted to impress myself\,” Tamko says. “I wanted to be curious and I wanted to make big leaps as a producer. All I had access to on the road was my computer and Logic\, so naturally I started writing songs electronically with what was at hand.” \nVagabon was written and produced entirely by Tamko. Guitar-driven melodies are largely absent\, and in their place we are treated to a collection of songs buoyed by hybridized analog and digital arrangements. While Infinite Worlds situated the last Vagabon project in the realm of “indie rock\,” Vagabon is not easily defined. Grounded by Tamko’s expressive voice and knack for unique melodies\, the album flits between genres\, never lingering too long on one particular sensibility. \nLead single “Flood” exemplifies this growth; the production ebbs like a gentle tide before a cavernous drumbeat kicks in and the tone shifts completely. “I know\, even if I run from it I’m still in it\,” Tamko sings over and over again\, her capacious voice conveying a sense of resignation in the face of an external force beyond her control. The chorus is a hypnotic bit of pop alchemy that lingers long after the runtime. \n“The drums and vocal forward approach I took on the new album is drawn from my love for rap and hip-hop production as well as R&B and folk storytelling. That’s the music that got me excited about writing again\,” Tamko says. In addition to those influences\, the West African guitars and rhythms that soundtracked much of her childhood seep into moments throughout this album\, in no place more obvious than on “In A Bind.” The song opens with a fingerpicked melody as Tamko sings to someone she’s been orbiting for a while but can’t quite reach. “I know that I was gone a lot last year/ But I hoped you’d still be here\,” she sings. DESCRIPTION:Founded in Athens\, Georgia by twin brothers Reid and Blaze Bateh\, and bassist William Brookshire\, Bambara have been steadily attracting attention since the release of their 2013 debut. Earning praise from places like Pitchfork\, NPR\, VICE\, Bandcamp\, Spin\, DIY\, BrooklynVegan and The Quietus\, and touring non-stop in the US and Europe with like-minded artists like IDLES\, METZ\, Girl Band and Daughters\, the band released their most celebrated album to date in 2018 with Shadow On Everything\, a release that NPR dubbed a “mesmerizing western\, gothic opus.” Today\, Bambara are announcing their follow up Stray (due out via Wharf Cat on February 14th\, 2020)\, with the premiere of the album’s first single “Serafina” on the FADER. \nA thunderous squall of a song\, “Serafina” provides an arresting introduction to the album. Channelling the anarchic energy of The Birthday Party and Gun Club\, in combination with Reid Blateh’s dramatic lyrical style the track imbues the story of a pair suburban misfits with apocalyptic weight. Bambara’s rhythm section rattles and bursts behind a frantic descending guitar lead as Reid\, in a fraying baritone\, weaves a tale set in his home state of Georgia that acknowledges the history of the place with subtle Civil War allusions\, while conjuring an immediate atmosphere of backwoods unease. As Reid tells to FADER\, it’s a song built to communicate an unhinged energy. \n“Stray is a death-obsessed album\,” says Reid. “Most of the songs are about different characters’ futile attempts at living meaningful lives under the weight of imminent annihilation. I wanted “Serafina” to feel different. I wanted the song to radiate a sort of wild-eyed hope. A youthful disregard for death itself. Serafina and Sadie live exactly how they want to live\, exploring their love for one another before a backdrop of flames. The knowledge of their own mortality takes nothing from their enthusiasm for life. If anything\, they see it as a challenge they might one day overcome together. When they say\, “We’ll never die” I want it to feel like they might actually have a shot.” \nBambara are embarking on a UK tour that begins in Bristol at the Simple Things Festival on October 19th. Additionally\, they are today announcing a Brooklyn show at St. Vitus on November 8th and a full US tour in support of the album to take place in 2020. Full details can be found below. \nOne thing you won’t be able to avoid on Bambara’s Stray is death. It’s everywhere and inescapable\, abstract and personified. Death\, however\, won’t be the first thing that strikes you about the group’s fourth album. That instead will be its pulverising soundscape; by turns\, vast\, atmospheric\, cool\, broiling and at times – as on stand out tracks like “Sing Me To The Street” and “Serafina” – simply overwhelming \nThe album began when the band locked themselves in their windowless Brooklyn basement to write.
