DESCRIPTION:“King Buffalo is a psychedelic trio in the classic format of bass\, drums\, and guitar\, whose expansive and thunderous music is anything but easily definable. \nFormed by three long-standing members of the blooming Rochester\, NY rock scene\, King Buffalo gathered in September of 2013 to start working on a new musical collaboration in a heavy rock vein. Their efforts spawned a demo release and several splits and one-offs which\, coupled with their impressive live show\, quickly gained them an international audience. \nNearly exactly three years after their formation\, written during and out of jam sessions\, (King Buffalo released Orion)… nine tracks that are texturally rich and oozing with psychedelic goodness\, yet honed and driving in the next blink of an eye. Lush\, shimmering melodies á la Dead Meadow and free-flowing grooves… with the full force of fuzzed-out stoner rock riffs\, all coinciding organically. Impressively\, King Buffalo’s focus extends beyond composition and into the technical realm; Orion was recorded entirely by the band in the very same rehearsal room that played host to the songs’ creation.” – Sludgelord \n“The question of how… heavy psych upstart trio King Buffalo will follow-up their debut full-length\, Orion\, is answered in the form of the three-track Repeater EP. In the year-plus since the album’s first\, (self-)release in 2016\, the three-piece of guitarist/vocalist Sean McVay\, bassist Dan Reynolds and drummer Scott Donaldson signed to Stickman Records and oversaw an official issue of the record and have toured Stateside with All Them Witches and in Europe alongside labelmates Elder\, and the EP brings three new cuts that represent the first new music they’ve produced following this productive time. \nIt is 24 minutes of material\, and more than 13 of that resides within the opening title-track (also the longest of the set; immediate points)\, but in terms of flow and conveying a sense of how their progression is unfolding\, Repeater feels like the first chapter in a larger story more than a standalone offering. That is to say\, the vibe is more mini-album than single-song showcase for throwaways or “extras” from a recording session. \nPart of that may of course owe to the fluidity in King Buffalo’s approach overall\, which was certainly a factor on Orion and just as certainly hasn’t at all been diminished by the stretches of time they’ve spent on the road\, but there’s a perceptible resounding in the molten aspects of “Repeater\,” “Too Little too Late” and “Centurion” that underlines the purposefulness with which King Buffalo engage such an open feel in what they do. Jamming is a crucial part of it at their foundation\, but as far out as they go\, their chemistry is put to use in servicing a song\, even in something as vast as “Repeater” itself\, which is their longest single track to-date. \nI don’t know and won’t try to speculate where King Buffalo might go with their sophomore full-length when the time comes for it\, how they might continue to grow\, what they might push toward in terms of arrangements or execution or general sound\, but Repeater finds them brimming with confidence both as individuals and as a unit\, and their songwriting here hits a new level of craftsmanship that only raises one’s hopes even after such an impressive debut long-player. DESCRIPTION:Raleigh-based Thirsty Curses is garage rock outfit formed in 2017 as a vehicle for singer-songwriter Wilson Getchell’s material. Thirsty Curses is  comprised of Wilson Getchell (vocals\, guitar\, piano) and Kelley Otwell (lead guitar)\,  Phillip Harrington (drums)\, and Claytron Herring(bass). \nThirsty Curses’ sound covers a fast array of rock ‘n roll subgenres including punk\, folk\, country\, prog rock\, 90s alternative\, and pop. 
 Indeed\, as was noted by Alternative Addiction in their review of the band’s sophomore record All Shook Up (2018)\, “the band has an eclectic sound that touches on everything from punk rock to folk. SUMMARY:black midi
DESCRIPTION:You can hear black midi’s rehearsal space from the other end of the road. A rhythmic racket blasts from behind the iron lion knocker on the door of a dilapidated Georgian townhouse in south west London. It’s only when they’ve finished playing that they can hear it bang and let you in… \nInside\, the energy only lessens a notch. Geordie Greep\, black midi’s curiously voiced singer\, and guitarist Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin sit with guitars on their laps\, occasionally flickering out riffs to illustrate a point. The repartee between the pair\, and bassist Cameron Picton and drummer Morgan Simpson\, is quiet but quick and laconic. \nIt’s a connection reflected in the intensely focused and driven live shows with which black midi have made their name\, Over the past year or so\, this fearsomely youthful group – Greep and Picton are 19\, Simpson and Kelvin just a year older – have built a reputation for fierce\, uncompromising and ever-evolving live shows that\, though they’ve drawn comparisons to the likes of Shellac\, sound like nothing else around at the moment. After a series of early gigs at Brixton’s Windmill\, their increasing reputation led to requests for support slots with Shame\, and a debut American tour that saw them win over new fans at SXSW and beyond. \nblack midi bonded over shared musical enthusiasms\, or “liking messed up things” as Kelvin puts it\, including an appreciation for rapper Danny Brown\, Death Grips\, Deerhoof\, Miles Davis and Talking Heads\, who they like so much they called a song… Talking Heads. Greep says that “we’ve always tried to make it heavy but danceable\, melodic but good rhythms. It is accessible music\, there are experimental aspects that we’ve taken from when we went crazy at the beginning\, we’ve just reigned it in to make something that is pop music.” \nIt feels like an explosion from a group of young men who have long been steeped in making music. Morgan Simpson grew up in a church and took up the drums when he was two. Greep started out playing along to the likes of Franz Ferdinand’s Take Me Out and Black Sabbath on “the OG” Guitar Hero. “I was like ‘this is badass’\, I thought the songs were sick so I borrowed CDs of my dad\, I got into that music and thought ‘now let’s learn the real guitar’”\, he says. The foursome all met at the Brit School\, the music college that has turned out the likes of Adele\, and are full of praise for their education and teachers for giving them a vital grounding in musical collaboration. \nWhile studying\, the group paid their way by teaching music and doing sessions for friends\, and Greep and Kelvin would go busking in Bromley. This actually ended up giving them one of their best songs\, Ducter. “Back when we were kids\, well three years ago\, but when you’re a kid\, busking is a chill way to make money. Some days versions of Jimi Hendrix’ ‘Purple Haze’ and blues and soul tracks might yield a couple of hundred quid\, others were less lucrative. Sometimes we got £5\,” says Greep. “It was one of those days when we got £5 and we thought\, ‘let’s just jam our own stuff.’ People were saying ‘what’s going on?’” \nWhen the group began\, they had far more rules and regulations about what should and shouldn’t be done. This evolved\, says Greep\, into an “anything goes” policy of experimentation\, “if it works\, if we keep thinking about it\, just do it. DESCRIPTION:At the center of Leslie Stevens’ music is that notoriously heart-catching voice. She can belt it out grandly when she wants to\, but the Los Angeles singer also possesses a distinctively honeyed tone that imbues her new album\, Sinner\, with a radiant charisma that sparks both ebullient love songs and more intimate ballads. \nStevens’ voice is so beguiling that she has developed a thriving sideline as an in-demand singer who has recorded and toured with a litany of disparate musicians\, including Florence + the Machine\, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James\, Father John Misty\, Jenny O.\, Joe Walsh\, Jackson Browne\, Jonny Fritz\, and John Fogerty. \nStevens might be a singer’s singer\, but it is her bold original songwriting that elevates Sinner from a merely dazzling vocal showcase into an artistically ambitious\, poignantly affecting and sometimes startling work. The new album is released on LyricLand LLC and out on Thirty Tigers/The Orchard\, and Stevens is scheduled to head out on the road for a series of European festivals in August and September 2019. Produced by Jonathan Wilson (Dawes\, Roger Waters\, Father John Misty) – who added to the record’s moody atmosphere by playing a variety of instruments (guitars\, bass\, drums\, percussion and even Mellotron) – Sinner is a stirring statement of purpose by the native Missouri singer. \nStevens’ two previous full-length recordings – Roomful of Smoke (when she fronted the beloved country-rock combo Leslie Stevens & The Badgers) and her first solo album\, The Donkey and the Rose – led Los Angeles Times to declare that she is “one of the city’s best” and L.A. Weekly to anoint her as Best Country Singer in 2018. But Sinner represents something of a daring step forward for the singer-guitarist. Although the album features such quintessential Stevens folk-pop gems as “Sylvie” and the ethereal consolation of the country-rock ballad “You Don’t Have to Be So Tough\,” Sinner also branches out into unexpected territory\, like “Teen Bride\,” a candied reverie that’s as close as Stevens has ever come to 1950s-style teen pop. \n“Teen Bride” floats by so airily\, with Stevens’ lulling voice adorned by beams of celestial\, churchy organ and wisps of jazzy guitar\, that you might not notice that she has deftly sketched a tear-jerking portrait of a tragic teen pregnancy in just a few loaded lyrics (“A God who lied”) wrapped up in a 2:32-minute pop confection: “Song in her head/And he stood like a man/With a rose on his chest/She was with child/With a boy at her breast.” \nEven more provocative is “The Tillman Song\,” a strangely surreal and passionately raging anthem about Pat Tillman\, the popular NFL defensive back who enlisted in the U.S. Army at the height of his career only to be killed in Afghanistan in a controversial friendly-fire incident. The song transcends right- and left-wing ideologies as Stevens blends a reverential appreciation for Tillman’s service with impressionistic imagery that sears and gets to the heart of the matter\, even as Jonathan Wilson’s furious hard-rock guitar solos punctuate her rueful words: “I chose to stay and be the artist/And you chose to go and kill/And I have slaughtered my own armies/And you have done no ill/You shouted ‘This war is illegal/And I believe in love’/as the bombs fell into Baghdad/And the hawks came for the doves.” \nLinks: Website | Facebook | Instagram | Spotify \n\n\n	Related

DESCRIPTION:After two studio albums and nearly seven years as a band\, Free Throw is making a significant change to their identity. The group – who has sung openly of personal struggles related to substance abuse and body image – is holding nothing back on What’s Past is Prologue\, their third full length record\, due out March 29\, 2019 on Triple Crown Records. \nPast releases may have provided small glimpses into Free Throw’s history as a band and personal lives outside of music\, but What’s Past is Prologue is the group at their most forthcoming. The 12 tracks contained on the album detail the continuing mental health struggles of lead singer Cory Castro\, and serve as a complete story of what happens when you decide that everything in your life needs to change. \n“This album is very much about me hitting rock bottom from a mental health standpoint and the process I took in building myself back up\,” Castro explained. “With the last record\, I was trying to talk about my mental health\, but at the time I was actually going through it. The last album felt like I was yelling from the void. This time I’m looking back into the void and I’m able to understand what was going on.” \nThe beautiful anguish that often comes with personal growth and an unexpected reckoning of self is palpable from the album’s outset. Beginning with “Smokes\, Let’s Go” – a track of transition that features surprisingly delicate vocals and simple strings switches to impassioned shouts and furious instrumentals – Free Throw lead us out of the darkness and into the light. \nAs Castro explains\, the record is split into two parts. Shook Twins refer to these folks in the title of their fourth album\, Some Good Lives. Throughout fourteen tracks\, the duo-identical twin sisters Katelyn Shook [vocals\, guitar] and Laurie Shook [banjo\, vocals]-pay homage to everyone from a late grandpa and godfather to Bernie Sanders. \n“We realized there was a theme\,” Katelyn reveals. “Even though our minds are mostly on the women of today and wanting the monarchy to rise up\, we have several men in our lives who have been such positive forces. We wanted to thank them and honor the good guys who showed us the beauty in this crazy world we live in. So\, it’s an album for Some Good Lives that have crossed paths with ours-and to them\, we are grateful.” \nLaurie agrees\, “It’s also an acknowledgment of our thankfulness of the good life that we get to live.” \nHowever\, the pair derived their own strength from these relationships. These amazing players helped us realize that we could be more than just ‘folk pop’. We started adding other genres to the word like ‘disco\,’ ‘psychedelic\,’ ‘funk\,’ and ‘soul.’ We really honed in on a new sound.” \nThey initially teased that evolution with the single “Safe.” Its airy acoustic guitar and delicate harmonies materialize as a heartfelt and hypnotic rumination on love. DESCRIPTION:The National Parks was formed by Brady Parks in 2013 in Provo\, Utah and has since independently released three studio albums. Upon the release of their debut LP\, Young (2013)\, the band climbed to #13 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter chart and with their sophomore record\, Until I Live (2015)\, the 4-piece became a Billboard Regional Heatseeker. Building upon their original sound of twanged-out\, punk rock gutterbilly (Life of Sin 2004 and Gutterbillyblues 2007)\, they began picking up stray musicians along the way and adding to their sound; washboard\, accordion\, mandolin and banjo (Ghost of the Rails 2009 and 7 Devils 2011) creating a sound referred to as “hobocore”\, “gypsy-punk” or “americana-punk”\, while never being stuck in any one sound. \nEnter 2018 and The Goddamn Gallows have reinvented themselves once again with The Trial. The Bridge City Sinners take folk songs in the direction of a punk rocker. A rowdy folksy mosaic of banjo\, violin\, guitar\, mandolin\, upright bass\, & ukulele. The Sinners started their journey as a rotating cast of friends in 2016 who just wanted to play music on the streets “busk” in Portland\, Oregon. They have transitioned into a powerful force playing festivals in 2018 such as Vans Warped Tour\, NW String Summit\, the Fest\, & Seattle Folklife Festival. \nBefore the Bridge City Sinners\, lead singer Libby Lux and upright bass player Scott Michaud infrequently started playing music together on the streets of Portland\, Oregon over eight years ago. Without rehearsal\, nor a plan\, a few times a year they would meet up with other various street musicians to sing and yell at passer byers. Years before that\, on their separate journeys\, they traveled\, hitch-hiked\, and howled at the moon across the United States\, Canada\, and Mexico. In hobo fashion\, they earned what they’d eat and roofs over their heads by the papers and coins tossed into their hat.  \nThrough their years of wandering\, they were able to pick up a rich catalog of songs passed through the traveling / busking community. In 2012\, their mutual best friend and lead singer of folk-punk band Profane Sass\, passed away when he fell off a train in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania. In a way the Bridge City Sinners are a homage to keep his spirit alive and continue passing along the music they all sang together on the streets\, hidden in trains\, and in living rooms across the continent. This community has allowed Liz to be a part of many magically haphazard nights\, where the movers and shakers of the Nashville music world\, such as Okey Dokey\, Becca Mancari\, Rayland Baxter\, Desert Noises\, Morning Teleportation\, Erin Rae\, Brittany Howard\, Cage the Elephant\, Michael Nau and many more converge to make music and art and lose track of time. Her latest album is a product of that pulsating energy in Nashville that has had some of the greatest influence in her work. \nWindow Flowers is the culmination of a year where Liz made a purposeful effort to do something creative every day. Whether it was directly related to music or not\, this creative process challenged and inspired her to continually put herself in new situations and pushed her to become a better songwriter and guitar player. The tentative newcomer that is present in her early recordings was all but gone in the making of the album. Her absorption into the collaborative community is evidenced by guest appearances on Window Flowers including Will Brown (Michael Nau) on the keys\, Michael and Ben Ford (Airpark) bgv’s/ guitar and songwriting\, Gianni Gibson (Future Thieves) percussion\, Leah Blevins on BGV’s\, Emily Kohavi (Kacey Musgraves\, Eminem etc.) on violin and Steve Dawson on pedal steel. Liz Cooper & The Stampede and their guests spent five days tracking Window Flowers at Welcome to 1979 in Nashville\, Tennessee. TJ Elias\, who co-produced the album with the band\, sparked the relationship by approaching Liz one night backstage at The Ryman Auditorium after hearing her songs through a mutual friend and musician\, Cody Huggins. \nWindow Flowers is a collection of music that deals with the weight of mundanity\, and politely tells it to fuck off. When listening to “Sleepyhead” you hear remembrances of her early Nashville recordings\, mixed with the powerful assertion that this is Liz Cooper\, a force that will continue to shape and mold her own course of creating music. Whether you see Liz Cooper & The Stampede in a dive bar or a theater venue\, you feel like you are being transported to another time and place. DESCRIPTION:For a guy whose career has evolved more by serendipity than design\, Ben Dickey’s professional journey has turned into one heckuva ride. It’s not every day an obscure musician’s famous actor/director friend hands him the lead in a passion-project indie film\, and he not only winds up sharing the screen with one of his musical heroes\, he also wins a Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Prize for Dramatic Achievement in Acting – and a Variety magazine “for your consideration” plug for a Best Actor Oscar nomination. 

Dickey’s acting debut in Blaze\, Ethan Hawke’s biopic about doomed Texas singer-songwriter Blaze Foley\, has already led to more roles\, including their pairing as bounty hunters in The Kid\, a western directed by Vincent D’Onofrio. But just as exciting\, as far as Dickey’s concerned\, is the opportunity it provided to record with that musical hero\, longtime Bob Dylan guitarist Charlie Sexton (who played Blaze’s other troubled Texas songwriting legend\, Townes Van Zandt). After they did the film’s original cast recording (on Light in the Attic Records)\, Sexton produced Dickey’s solo album\, A Glimmer on the Outskirts. That inspired Sexton\, Hawke and Blaze executive producer Louis Black to form SexHawkeBlack Records\, a new Austin-based imprint under the umbrella of Nashville’s Dualtone Records. Dickey’s March 7\, 2019 release is the label’s first. \nIt’s hardly Dickey’s first recording foray\, however. In fact\, he says\, he preferred the idea of forming a label to shopping for one because he’d been signed before – and still bears scars from watching the dream morph into a momentum-sucking nightmare. But SexHawkeBlack president Erika Pinktipps happens to be friends with Dualtone’s founder; that connection quickly turned into an actual alliance. “We’re all doing this together\,” Dickey says\, “[it’s] a group of people who all care about each other and have similar artistic arrows pointed in the same direction.” \nDickey was 10 when his artistic arrow started pointing toward music; that’s when his grandfather handed down his 1935 Gibson L-30 archtop. “He was a magical fellow\, and his guitar is\, too\,” Dickey says. “So I wanted to be magic\, too.” 

Within a year\, his grandfather was gone. The magic\, fortunately\, stayed. But conjuring it wasn’t always easy for a kid growing up in Little Rock\, Arkansas\, far from his dad – a college football star who’d moved to Georgia after the parental split\, when Dickey was 4. Ten years later\, Dickey’s mother left\, too – following her friend and boss\, Bill Clinton\, from the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion to the White House. Dickey moved into his grandmother’s basement – and became one more angry\, disaffected teenage rocker. 

He formed his first “real” band\, Shake Ray Turbine\, at 16\, made his first record at 17 and began touring at 18\, ditching Little Rock Central High (most famous students: the Little Rock Nine) for an $850 Ford van.
