DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough and Mike’s Art Truck are happy to present the art of Hillsborough artist Barbara Younger. The new show\, “The Songs of The Beatles: Folk Art by Barbara Younger\,” will be on display starting September 6\, 2024 at the Alexander Dickson House\, the historic building which houses the Hillsborough Visitors Center. \nArtist Barbara Younger\, inspired by an art class at a local senior center\, is discovering how much fun it can be to listen to her own inner artist. The fun\, it seems\, is contagious\, as her artwork is greeted with enthusiasm and support at local galleries\, art shows\, and online. She refers to her work as “happy art” and she is excited to be able to share both the art and the happiness! \nYounger’s artwork consists of paintings and collages\, many pieces containing elements of both. She enjoys learning about the lives of other artists and experimenting with their techniques\, as well. Her subjects are illustrated with simple figures\, including a wide array of people and animals enjoying life. The artist seeks out souvenirs and ephemera related to a theme for constructing her collages and enhancing her paintings. \nThe current show focusing on the songs of The Beatles is made up of forty pieces meant to trigger a memory or a smile from viewers who appreciate the music of the “Fab Four.” Each piece represents a song. Like many of her generation\, Barbara Younger admires the band’s whimsical lyrics and musical innovations. DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough and Mike’s Art Truck are happy to present “More Stars Than Heaven: Art by Eric Legge” at the Alexander Dickson House\, home of the Hillsborough Visitors Center. The exhibit is on view now through April 11\, 2024. \nSelf-taught artist Eric Legge leads a peaceful life in the mountains of Georgia\, contemplating the universe and surrounding himself with creatures and objects that he has found by “happy accident.” Putting discarded art supplies\, dumpster finds\, and the occasional beaver stick to good use\, Legge creates paintings and assemblages that radiate positive energy. \nAnticipating this new show in Hillsborough\, NC\, the artist was moved by the history of the exhibit’s venue. Near the end of the American Civil War\, The Alexander Dickson House was used by Confederate forces\, as they prepared for the largest surrender of the war at nearby Bennett Farm. The surrender put an end to the Civil War in the Carolinas\, Georgia\, and Florida. The house itself nearly surrendered to the development of a shopping center\, but was salvaged and relocated in 1983. In his artwork Eric Legge follows the threads of thought and spirituality that shape our existence and describe our universe\, whether we reside in a “Mars Hotel” or a farmhouse in Hillsborough\, NC. DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough and Mike’s Art Truck are pleased to extend the current exhibition of paintings by self-taught folk artist Jessie Lavon. The held-over show\, “A Sharecropper’s Daughter: Folk Art by Jessie Lavon\,” is on display now through April 11\, 2024 at the Alexander Dickson House\, the historic building which houses the Hillsborough Visitors Center. \nArtist Jessie Lavon speaks of herself as a sharecropper’s daughter. She remembers that sharecropper\, her mother\, as the best friend she ever had. She remembers a lot about the old days when she was a child on the farm in southern Alabama. She remembers details about the old ways of getting things done back then\, and she remembers the simple pleasures that brought joy to her as a child. These are the memories that she shares with us in her paintings and her stories. \nLavon hasn’t always remembered. Years ago a cerebral hemorrhage wiped out a large portion of her memory. At first she only recognized her mother. When she started to recall her childhood\, she began to paint what she remembered. As she painted\, she remembered more and more details of her early life. Years later\, she has relearned many basic skills\, and she has no shortage of stories to tell. \nJust this January\, Jessie Lavon issued a statement of her intention to “permanently step down from the folk art world.” While expressing gratitude to all who have supported her\, she states that her “art will no longer be for sale once the current inventory is sold out.” Mike’s Art Truck (mikesarttruck.com) will be one of only two galleries that will continue to offer her current inventory for sale\, the other being PossumCounty.com. Lavon remains cheerful about her decision as she plans to enjoy more time gardening\, canning\, and tending her grandchildren. \nExhibition artwork is available for purchase directly through Mike’s Art Truck. DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough and Mike’s Art Truck are happy to present “Art by Sam Ezell” at the Hillsborough Visitors Center. When folk art fans think of tiny Hillsborough\, NC\, they most likely think of local artist Sam Ezell. Although his recent abstract paintings are being received with acclaim\,  art in his original primitive style had already become well-known and very popular by the time his eyesight started to fail in 2016. The current exhibit brings together paintings in his earlier style\, with more recent abstract work. Ezell’s art is on display from October 6 through December 21\, 2023\, at the Alexander Dickson House\, the historic building which houses the Hillsborough Visitors Center. \nWorking a full-time job at locally legendary Daniel Boone Village shopping center\, Sam Ezell never intended to become an artist until he promised a friend that he would give it a try. Once he started painting\, he was surprised how much he enjoyed it. He found a primitive style\, turning amusing memories into joyful images of blue skies and multicolored chickens\, birds and flowers\, mustard and mayonnaise\, and people having fun. \nWhen he developed difficulty with his eyesight in 2016\, Ezell worried that he might have to give up painting. Straining to see the details of his smaller paintings\, he found larger canvases much easier to work with. He let his imagination lead him to creating abstracts composed of simple shapes and bright colors. The new paintings are cheerful and fun\, like all of his work\, and he is a happy artist once again. DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough and Mike’s Art Truck are pleased to present a collection of paintings by self-taught Gullah artist Irene Tison. The exhibit\, “Low Country Memories: Paintings by Irene Tison\,” is on display from August 25\, 2023 through October 2\, 2023 at the Alexander Dickson House\, the historic building which houses the Hillsborough Visitors Center. \nA true child of the Carolina Low Country\, Irene Tison was raised into the Gullah culture of her ancestors and there her heart remains. The Gullah and the Geechee people are descendants of Africans that were captured and brought to the Atlantic coast to work enslaved on Southern rice plantations. From slavery to today\, these relatively isolated communities from North Carolina to Florida have nurtured and maintained a distinct cultural identity. \nFrom her own memories or from tales passed down by older generations\, Irene Tison’s bright paintings tell stories of growing up in the South. SUMMARY:Afterglow: Art by Jon Whiddon
DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough and Mike’s Art Truck present “Afterglow: Art by Jon Whiddon” featuring art from the artist’s estate. This will mark the center’s first folk art exhibit from Mike’s Art Truck since Covid restrictions began in 2020. Spanning Jon Whiddon’s brief but intense artistic journey from 1999 to 2008\, the exhibition is composed of the unsold work and personal collection that were left to Whiddon’s estate when he passed away in 2008. The art is on display from May 20 through September 8\, 2022\, at the Alexander Dickson House\, the historic building which houses the Hillsborough Visitors Center. \nAt the age of 39\, Jon Whiddon began teaching himself to paint. At first he used leftover tractor paint and scrap wood\, recreating the Georgia farmland with vibrant lines and intense light. He approached painting with enthusiasm and resourcefulness\, and his work quickly developed into an energetic\, impressionistic style. Relocating to the Blue Ridge Mountains brought a fresh perspective to his paintings as he eagerly adapted to his new environment. Hungry for exploration\, Whiddon set out on a personal quest to see the world and to bring it to life in his paintings. He envisioned extended trips to be followed with intense periods of creativity on his return\, all with the support of his growing cadre of friends and fans. A hugely successful trip to Italy was followed by another to Bali. In August 2007\, shortly after his return from Bali\, Jon was diagnosed with cancer. He continued painting and planning until his death on February 20\, 2008. On the night of a lunar eclipse\, the life of this promising self-taught artist came to a tragic end. \nExhibition artwork is available for purchase directly through Mike’s Art Truck. DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough and Mike’s Art Truck are pleased to present another special exhibit of folk art at the Alexander Dickson House in Hillsborough\, NC. Highlighted by the work of Savannah artist Rudolph Bostic\, “More Outsider Art in the Visitors Center” is the second in a series of shows featuring “outsider” art from a variety of self-taught artists. The collection is on display August 30 through November 28\, 2019\, inside the historic building which houses the Hillsborough Visitors Center. \nThe centerpiece of the current exhibit is a group of paintings by Rudolph Bostic\, a proud artist with a big smile. Painting on scrap cardboard\, Bostic has established a distinctive style illustrating Biblical and mythological scenes with rich\, fluid lines. Although his work has found its way into museum collections\, this is the debut of these three paintings acquired directly from the artist. The Bostic paintings are accompanied by art from eight other Southern folk artists: Charlie Lucas\, Myrtice West\, Ab the Flagman\, bailey jack\, Dede Spitz\, Eric Legge\, John Henry Toney\, and David Bryant.  \nArtists like these who create “outsider art” have developed their own styles and techniques without regard for – or regard from – the artistic establishment of galleries\, museums\, and critics. After being “discovered” by collectors\, some outsiders have gained a degree of acceptance\, even fame\, but rarely fortune. An internal spark drives them to keep making art\, even when art does not pay the bills. DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough and Mike’s Art Truck are hosting a summer exhibit and sale of folk art at the Alexander Dickson House in Hillsborough\, NC. “Outsider Art in the Visitors Center” is a diverse collection of art from nine self-taught artists. The show is on display now through August 29\, 2019\, inside the historic building which houses the Hillsborough Visitors Center. \nThe artists who have brought forth this variety-pack of work are not well-known\, and their art is not widely recognized. They have created their art without regard for – or regard from – the artistic establishment of galleries\, museums\, and magazines. For these reasons\, they are truly outsiders. Starting from unique motivations and circumstances\, these the artists developed their own styles and techniques. \nThe exhibit contains portraits by j.d. Sipe\, the artist known as “theartist”\, and Jim Shores\, as well as social observations from “The Reverend Johnny Ace.” Artists Alyne Harris\, Annie Wellborn\, and Bennie Morrison pay tribute to memories of old ways and hard work\, while Dede Spitz and Floria Yancey express aspirations and dreams of the future. DESCRIPTION:The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough and Mike’s Art Truck are proud to present artwork by North Carolina artist Cher Shaffer at the Alexander Dickson House in Hillsborough\, NC. “Art from the Holler by Cher Shaffer” is a new selection of unique creations by one of our state’s best-loved self-taught artists. The show is on display now through May 30\, 2019\, in the historic building which houses the Hillsborough Visitors Center. \nAt her home “down in the holler” in rural Appalachia\, Cher Shaffer draws\, paints\, sculpts\, or assembles art every day\, as she has done for more than four decades. Over the years\, her art has followed her life’s meandering path\, growing and changing with her own self-awareness. As a young mother of three\, Shaffer first painted rural landscapes in a traditional folk-art style\, work that was charming\, yet constrained. Gradually\, as she and the children grew\, her art became more fluid and introspective. Now in her senior years\, Shaffer feels liberated and open as an artist\, free to express her emotions\, and receptive to enlightenment from any source. She works quickly\, spontaneously\, and relentlessly\, completely consumed by creative forces. Reflecting her own optimistic energy\, Cher Shaffer’s fanciful paintings and assemblages are infused with joy and humor. \n“Art from the Holler” is Cher Shaffer’s second collaboration with the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough and Mike’s Art Truck.
