SUMMARY:Lectures in Art History: Shanna Ketchum-Heap of Birds
DESCRIPTION:“Indigenous Performance Politics: An Analysis of Works by Kent Monkman\, Spiderwoman Theater Company\, Rebecca Belmore and James Luna” \nART&\, Ackland Art Museum \nBecause of space limitations\, we request that attendees register in advance here: https://events.ackland.org/event/guest-lecture-dr-shanna-ketchum-heap-of-birds/ \nBy internationalizing the debate concerning Indigeneity and decolonial thought\, as well as examining the basis of North American multiculturalism in the art world\, Shanna Ketchum-Heap of Birds’ research foregrounds a complex understanding of gender\, sexualities\, and race in line with moving away from a heteropatriarchal understanding imposed by colonialist and anthropological thinking.  In this talk\, she focuses on four artists/artists groups to offer new interpretations that question how we understand the colonial past by using images\, artworks\, and performances in strategic and interventionist ways that constitute acts of decolonization.  Following Linda Tuhiwai Smith’s Decolonizing Methodologies (1999)\, she contends that decolonial theories and processes are inherent to the struggles of Indigenous Peoples worldwide and intersect with one another on local\, national\, and global levels.  Therefore\, going beyond previous frameworks\, such as postmodern and postcolonial theories\, implies a renegotiation of the readings and analyses of Native American/First Nations artists/artists’ groups\, and their works\, in ways that problematize Indigenous erasure in favor of Indigenous presence and futurity. \nShanna Ketchum-Heap of Birds is a citizen of the Diné/Navajo Nation.  In 2022\, she completed her PhD at Middlesex University\, London\, focused on contemporary Native American/Indigenous visual artists and theater and performance studies.  Recent essays were published in Artforum International\, Wired Italia\, and Art Review magazine and in Tony Fisher and Eve Katsouraki (eds.)\, Beyond Failure: New Essays on the Cultural History of Failure in Theatre and Performance\, Routledge\, 2018.  See her website https://dinehwriter.art.  Ketchum-Heap of Birds has lectured at Artists Space in NYC\, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis\, Nanyang University in Singapore\, and Skype/Zoom lectures for the Barcelona Facultat De Geografia; Història Universitat De Barcelona; Museu D’art Contemporani De Barcelona (MACBA) and Shape: A Virtual Artist Residency sponsored by Vinegar Projects: An Artists-Run Space.  Ketchum-Heap of Birds also curated Suffer\, Dance\, Stand: Native Survival with Edgar Heap of Birds\, Douglas Miles\, and Warren Realrider in 2022 at OK #1 in Tulsa\, Oklahoma.  Dr. Ketchum-Heap of Birds currently teaches at the University of Central Oklahoma and is board president of Spiderwoman Theater Company (the longest-running Native American feminist theater group in the USA). \nThis lecture is co-sponsored by the Ackland Art Museum as part of their current exhibition\, Past Forward: Native American Art from Gilcrease Museum. DESCRIPTION:The UNC Undergraduate Student Government’s Department of Environmental Affairs is bringing the Sustainable Strut to the Ackland Art Museum this year! \nThe Sustainable Strut is a student-based fashion show that showcases clothing that has been cultivated sustainably and ethically. The show will feature a large group of student fashion organizations and designers. The mission is to bring awareness to the environmental degradation that textile pollution brings about by means of a diverse and inclusive fashion show. \nBringing together students of different perspectives and backgrounds\, the Sustainable Strut was first launched in March 2023 and served as an epicenter of creativity and community. Student Government is pleased to be revamping the show this year and bringing it to life in the Ackland’s galleries during the 2nd Friday ArtWalk. \nTICKETS \nThere will be two show times for the Sustainable Strut: 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Please reserve your ticket for the specific show time. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome Outwin first-prize-winning artist Alison Elizabeth Taylor to the Ackland for an artist talk about her fascinating body of work\, which uses a technique she describes as “marquetry hybrid” and can be seen in her prize-winning portrait titled Anthony Cuts under the Williamsburg Bridge\, Morning (2020). \nAlison Elizabeth Taylor depicted hair groomer Anthony Payne after encountering him in their Brooklyn neighborhood. Taylor used her marquetry hybrid technique to create the piece\, combining vivid paints\, inkjet prints and the natural grains of over 100 wood veneers. Her multilayered portrait began as sketches she made of Payne from life as well as photographs. With his workplace shuttered as a result of the pandemic\, Payne was offering donation-based haircuts to support Black Lives Matter\, and Taylor was struck by the way he embodied perseverance and solidarity. \nThis program is presented in connection with The Outwin: American Portraiture Today. On Sunday\, November 12\, Dancer-musician duo Garcia and Little will return to the Ackland to lead an interactive event that looks at their creative process\, discusses their artistic practices\, and encourages participants to ask questions and try out elements of their techniques.  \nFree and open to all ages. Maura García (non-enrolled Cherokee/Mattamuskeet) is a dancer\, dancemaker\, entertainer\, facilitator\, thought leader and artistic director. From theater stages\, to nightclubs\, to museums\, to conferences\, to universities\, to private events\, to site-specific outdoor performances\, Maura’s powerful work transforms time and space. SUMMARY:2nd Friday ArtWalk- Immersive Performance: "Step This Way"
DESCRIPTION:“Step This Way” is a site-specific performance featuring live music and dance by Mark Gabriel Little and Maura García. The performance takes place on and around the pARC\, an interactive playful installation designed and created by The Urban Conga on the Ackland’s Terrace. Throughout the performance\, elements of the composition and choreography will shift based on a predetermined pattern and depending on how audience members interact with the space. “Step This Way” transforms the seemingly unrelated elements of the Museum and the surrounding areas into a unifying performance experience\, with music and choreography that change as the environment and the people within it change throughout the duration of the piece. “Step This Way” celebrates place\, the arts\, and the capacity that we have to listen to\, relate to\, and beautifully respond to one another.\nFree and open to the public. No tickets needed.\n“Step This Way” is supported by a Grassroots grant from the Orange County Arts Commission and a gift from Allen Anderson and Tama Hochbaum. Technical support has been given by PlayMakers Repertory Company. DESCRIPTION:This 2nd Friday\, the Ackland Art Museum joins in the opening night celebrations of Uproar\, a festival of public art taking place throughout Orange County from July 14 – August 12 with sixty artists displaying work across Chapel Hill\, Carrboro\, and Hillsborough.  \nThe Lemonade Stand by Allison Coleman | 6-8 p.m. \nIn the spirit of the festival\, artist Allison Coleman will present her Lemonade Stand Project\, a mobile art-making\, story-telling\, and recipe gathering receptacle in the guise of a traditional lemonade stand. This public art project seeks to activate nontraditional spaces with art and community dialogue. DESCRIPTION:This exhibition explores how Aaron Douglas (1899-1979)\, one of the most important modernist artists of the Harlem Renaissance\, gave visual form to the idea that Black American culture is a modern culture of diaspora. He traced twentieth-century Black American culture and cultivated the self-image of Black Americans as a cosmopolitan cultural vanguard connected with Black people worldwide. \nThrough more than 40 paintings\, prints\, book and magazine illustrations\, drawings\, and other artworks\, Modern Black Culture demonstrates how Douglas developed an immediately recognizable style and advanced the idea that modern Black American culture drew upon music\, dance\, visual art\, and faith traditions developed in Black communities throughout the world. Sections of the exhibition focus on ways in which Douglas related Black Americans in the urban north with those living in the rural South\, as well as with Haiti\, Africa\, and Egypt. Another section explores Douglas’ connections with North Carolina. \nThe Ackland is fortunate to have a rich and varied collection of works by Aaron Douglas on long-term loan\, ranging from drawings and a sketchbook to items of applied art and a little-known version of one of his major compositions\, Building More Stately Mansions. To this core group have been added works from other well-known North Carolina collections\, including the Wilson Special Collections Library at UNC-Chapel Hill\, the North Carolina Museum of Art\, and Bennett College. \nModern Black Culture is curated by John Bowles\, associate professor of African American art in the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Art and Art History and faculty affiliate of the Institute for African American Research. SUMMARY:Collectors' Seminar: Building an Art Collection
DESCRIPTION:With Drs. John and Nicole Dintenfass\, Moderated by Peter Nisbet \nJoin us for an intimate conversation with Drs. John and Nicole Dintenfass about their lifelong passion for collecting art\, the latest in a series of talks with collectors whose works have been on view at the Ackland. The Dintenfasses have collected art for an astonishing fifty-three years\, beginning with John’s medical residency in West Africa and continuing for several decades as the French and American couple traveled throughout the U.S. and Europe. Their varied collection is comprised of African metalwork — some of which can now be seen at the Ackland in our exhibition Peace\, Power & Prestige: Metal Arts in Africa — but also extends to wooden miniatures\, Chinese art\, and American paintings and coins. The Dintenfasses\, together in conversation with Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs Peter Nisbet\, will discuss selected works from their African collection currently on view at the Museum\, talk about how they have built and refined their collection\, and share their thoughts on the psychology of collecting art\, the subject of a book they are currently writing. \nSpace is extremely limited at this in-person program and registration is required.
