SUMMARY:Rise Up!
DESCRIPTION:Women’s Voices Chorus presents “Rise Up!” which celebrates the immeasurable contributions of women as musicians\, poets\, authors\, scientists\, artists\, activists\, matriarchs\, and peacemakers. Featuring music and poetry composed by women\, we honor and amplify stories of resilience\, courage\, strength\, and hope. We pay tribute to those who confront injustice\, spark movements\, and inspire lasting change — women whose legacy endures. \nThis concert will be performed in collaboration with the SV-Five ensemble of Sisters’ Voices directed by Leandra Merea Strope. Sisters’ Voices is a choral community of girls\, within which each is known and supported while being challenged to grow as a musician and as a person. They are based in Chapel Hill\, NC\, and serve girls\, young women\, and gender expansive youth in pre-kindergarten through high school. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Coming Home
DESCRIPTION:“Coming Home” explores the many facets of what it means to search for\, discover\, and return to a place we can call home\, whether that home is a physical location\, an emotional state\, or a spiritual sanctuary. Through our program\, we express the joy of reunion\, the pain of separation\, and the nostalgia for places left behind. The path to finding home can be complex and varied\, involving a journey across lands and seas\, an inner search for self-identity\, or a quest for emotional and spiritual grounding. Our songs offer a musical narrative that resonates with everyone who has ever sought a place to call their own and to feel the welcome of belonging. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Together We Sing: Women’s Voices Chorus 30th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:“Together We Sing” will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Women’s Voices Chorus with a retrospective repertoire. Please join us for a look back and a look forward\, through music. \nSome highlights of our celebratory concert will include the first piece of music performed by Women’s Voices Chorus at our first concert in January 1994\, the Brahms Ave Maria\, Op. 12. Also included will be two iconic pieces suggested by Founding Director\, Mary Lycan (1993-2006)\, exemplifying salient aspects of WVC’s mission. The first\, reviving lost or forgotten works by women composers is Through the House Give Glimmering Light from Three Shakespeare Songs\, Op. 39\, No. 3 by Amy Beach. The second is The March of the Women by Ethel Smyth\, exemplifying the pivotal societal changes brought about by women visionaries and activists. \nOther pieces drawn from previously performed repertoire will include commissioned pieces representing the importance Women’s Voices Chorus places on supporting women composing for women’s voices. Two of these works have special connection to our chorus. Mah Dodech Midod by Eleanor Epstein was commissioned by WVC to honor Allan Friedman\, second WVC Artistic Director (2007-2019)\, and his wife Katie on the occasion of their wedding day. Another piece\, Sparks of Divinity by Lana Walter\, was commissioned by WVC to celebrate the life of Janie Perrin Stevens Brown\, mother of chorus member Susan E. Brown. \nAlso included are pieces that celebrate musical cultural diversity such as Ikan Kekek by Tracy Wong\, Spes (Hope) by Mia Makaroff\, and Gloria from Misa Criolla by Ariel Ramirez. New additions to our repertoire include Rosephanye Powell’s To Sit and Dream\, set to the Langston Hughes poem incorporating elements of jazz and the blues\, and You’ve Got a Friend in Me from Toy Story arranged in the contemporary a cappella style by Julie Gaulke. \nFrom serious to spirited and introspective to exuberant\, “Together We Sing: Women’s Voices Chorus 30th Anniversary Celebration” will showcase the artistry and sisterhood of Women’s Voices Chorus. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Nature of the Heart
DESCRIPTION:Featuring the music and poetry of women\, “Nature of the Heart” vividly expresses emotions of love\, hope\, longing\, and loss. Themes of remembering and renewal are revealed through melody\, harmony\, and verse as the imagery of earth’s beauty illustrates the cyclical nature of life. \nThe concert’s repertoire illustrates the deep connection between the soul and the natural world\, from Jayne Swank’s flowing and warm a cappella setting of Emily Dickinson’s poem “My River Runs to Thee” to Jocelyn Hagen’s contemplative and nostalgic setting of Naomi Shihab Nye’s “I Started Out Singing.” Other pieces include Carlotta Ferrari’s a cappella setting of Hildegard von Bingen’s “O ignee Spiritus” (O fiery Spirit) and Sarah Quartel’s “The Bird’s Lullaby.” \nThe virtual concert will be broadcast on our YouTube channel at 7:00 PM on May 23 and will be free of charge. Donations are welcome. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Angels Among Us: A Virtual Choral Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Compelling\, powerful\, and beautiful music amplifies the angelic theme of this season’s repertoire. Encompassing a wide range of musical styles and genres\, Angels Among Us illumines the stories of angels both sacred and secular. The message of the messengers is multi-faceted: hopeful\, healing\, watchful\, compassionate\, merciful\, loving and revealing. \nFor this concert\, we are creating virtual projects of a sampling of our repertoire. These projects are the result of the contributions of many participants – conductor\, singers\, pianist\, section leaders\, and the audio/video designer and editor. A link to the concert on our YouTube channel and a downloadable program will be posted on our website and social media accounts on February 6\, 2021 at 7:00pm. \nWe look forward to the day that we will once again rehearse and perform our music in person\, but until then\, we are grateful for the virtual season that has kept Women’s Voices Chorus singing together during the pandemic. We hope that you enjoy our virtual concert\, Angels Among Us. \n\n\n	Related
