SUMMARY:The Gut Instinct Chamber Music Project
DESCRIPTION:November 15: Pauline Viardot & Gabriel Faure \nThe Gut Instinct Chamber Music Project is a three-part\, free concert series in UNC Chapel Hill’s Person Recital Hall which brings UNC’s historical instrument collection together with artists committed to presenting inspired\, visceral\, historically informed performances of the 19th-century chamber music repertoire. This season’s programming features music of female composers and their artistic circles. The name “Gut Instinct” is a play on words. In 19th-century Europe\, the violin\, viola\, and cello were strung with (sheep) gut. \nThis program features Pauline Viardot\, one of the most important singers and musicians in the Parisian musical scene in the middle of the 19th century. Her salon concerts were frequented by the likes of Chopin and Liszt\, and Gabriel Fauré fell hopelessly in love with her daughter\, Marianne Viardot. In fact\, he loved her so much that he wrote his Violin Sonata in A Major and dedicated it to her brother–that is\, Pauline’s son\, Paul Viardot\, a noted violinist of his day. Mimi Solomon will perform on UNC’s beautiful 1843 Pleyel Piano\, an instrument most likely played by Chopin himself. Nicholas DiEugenio joins her on the violin. \nAll of the artists collaborating with the Pleyel and Graf pianos at UNC-Chapel Hill (built in 19th-century Paris and Vienna\, respectively) use these gut string materials. The turn of phrase “gut instinct” also refers to the visceral\, accessible nature of the musical performances that the artists of this series will be presenting. We want to make “Historically Informed Performance” accessible\, relatable\, and culturally relevant! We also want to feature these special pianos that are rarely heard by the public\, along with great music by female composers which has remained lesser known to the greater public for far too long! \n\n\n	Related

DESCRIPTION:February 28: Franz and Fanny \nThe Gut Instinct Chamber Music Project is a three-part\, free concert series in UNC Chapel Hill’s Person Recital Hall which brings UNC’s historical instrument collection together with artists committed to presenting inspired\, visceral\, historically informed performances of the 19th-century chamber music repertoire. This season’s programming features music of female composers and their artistic circles. The name “Gut Instinct” is a play on words. In 19th-century Europe\, the violin\, viola\, and cello were strung with (sheep) gut. \nThis program features Fanny Mendelssohn\, whose music is darker and more dramatic than that of her famous brother Felix. Mimi Solomon performs on UNC Chapel Hill’s special Graf fortepiano made by specialist Rod Regier. Rounding out the program is the iconic and epic Cello Quintet by Franz Schubert. Joining Mimi for the trio are violinist Nicholas DiEugenio and cellist Keiran Campbell. The Cello Quintet will be performed by Nicholas DiEugenio and Kako Boga\, violins\, Jessica Troy\, viola\, James Wilson and Keiran Campbell\, cellos. \nAll of the artists collaborating with the Pleyel and Graf pianos at UNC-Chapel Hill (built in 19th-century Paris and Vienna\, respectively) use these gut string materials. SUMMARY:Ex Machina: Festival on the Hill
DESCRIPTION:UNC’s Festival on the Hill is back with “EX MACHINA: Piano in the 21st Century\,” led by acclaimed pianist Clara Yang. Evolving technology has been changing our lives\, including how we experience art and music. This project brings together scholars and artists from different fields to contemplate the meanings of the “machine” and its role in our society. \nDon’t miss the visually immersive concert featuring eight world premieres written for the piano and two genre-crossing collaborative works. Make sure your cell phone is charged for this interactive experience. \n#ExMachinaUNC \n— \nWant to learn more about the project behind the performance? On March 20\, join an interdisciplinary panel of experts—from Music to Psychiatry to Data Science—as they explore the complex relationship between technology and humanity through art. And on March 21\, be part of the conversation with Clara Yang and her collaborators\, and learn more about their creative process and what it took to bring EX MACHINA to life. Visit the event website for more details. \n— \nThis project is supported by the Department of Music\, the Institute for the Arts and Humanities\, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research\, the Arts & Humanities Grant Studio\, and the College of Arts & Sciences at UNC-Chapel Hill. \n\n\n	Related
