SUMMARY:Accidental Traveller
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of images captured in the latter half of 2021\, Accidental Traveller is the result of the latest photographic expeditions of Sia Yazdanfar. As he had done so in 2020\, Yazdanfar returned to his home country of Iran from the US\, navigating travel to multiple locations with the world in the grips of a pandemic. \nAfter a six-week run at Alamance Arts Sister Galleries\, the Accidental Traveller exhibition will debut at the Nicholson Gallery\, ArtsCenter on June 1st\, and run through June 25th. \nShot in the latter half of 2021\, this collection of photographs depicts the unique people and places of the subtropical southern fringes of Iran around Hormozgan Province. \n“Boasting some of the most colorful landscape & locals I have ever encountered\, Hormozgan Province borders the gulf where it meets the Strait of Hormuz\, the preeminent strategic chokepoint on Earth. I believe these voyages yielded some of the most kaleidoscopic & engaging photos I have had the privilege to shoot\, capturing some of the lesser known parts of the Middle East.” – Sia Yazdanfar \nReception and additional events will be announced throughout the exhibition:\nwww.artscenterlive.org\nwww.siayazdanfar.com \nGallery hours:\nMonday – Friday 9:00 am-9:00 pm\nSaturday – Sunday 10:00 am-5:00 pm \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Haunted: An American Tale\, presented by Sonny Kelly
DESCRIPTION:What does a daddy say to his baby boy when the boogie man is real? Confronted by a surge in White supremacist activity and Confederate nostalgia in the nation that he calls home\, one father struggles to explain this wave of hatred and bigotry to his son. In HAUNTED\, actor and playwright\, Dr. Sonny Kelly takes on the voices of historians\, ancestors\, elders\, youths\, politicians\, pundits\, and poets\, as he traces the roots and routes of modern day anti-Black violence in America. Kelly recounts the roots of hatred and fear embedded in the story of the 1898 lynching of Manley McCauley in Orange County\, North Carolina. He also tracks the routes of racialized violence in America as manifested in the colonial justice system\, the Wilmington Massacre of 1898\, the 2015 shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston\, South Carolina\, and the 2020 lynching of Ahmaud Arberry in Brunswick\, Georgia. Kelly digs deep to examine the impact that racial violence has historically had on our minds\, bodies\, and souls in the land of the free and the home of the brave. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Live Stream: “The Immigrant” Live Score by Tim Carless
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, November 7th\, 2020\, Tim Carless presents The Immigrant\, the second film in his series of Charlie Chaplin live-scores streaming the first Saturday of October\, November and December. \nThe Immigrant\, made in 1917\, is the eleventh of twelve films that Charlie Chaplin made for the Mutual Film Company. It begins aboard a ship\, bound for America\, and upon arrival\, the passengers marvel at the sight of the Statue of Liberty. It features Edna Purviance and Eric Campbell\, both regulars in Chaplin films. This is the first time that Charlie’s character embarks upon a romantic relationship onscreen which in and of itself is remarkable. Although filmed during the silent-era\, Chaplin employed musicians on the set to play music to create moods as the scenes were shot. He later offered\, “The Immigrant touched me more than any other film I made. I thought the end had quite a poetic feeling.” The film made it into the National Film Registry in 1998. \nCarless will be performing on solo guitar live from his studio in Carrboro. The performance can be watched on The ArtsCenter’s YouTube Live: youtube.com/theartscenterlive/live \nWe hope you will join us for another outstanding free live-streamed event! \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Help Save Halloween with Mister G
DESCRIPTION:Help Save Halloween with Mister G\nhttps://mistergsongs.com/halloween/\nTickets: https://laudable.productions/upcoming-events/ \nMister G and Laudable Productions invite children across the U.S. and Mexico to join us in saving Halloween with our border-busting\, world-wide costume party! Join the festivities at 4PM ET (1PM PT) or 7PM ET (4PM PT) on October 31st. Admission is FREE but tickets are limited and you must reserve your virtual seat in advance. Attendees will receive a free music download from MISTER G’s new album\, Children Of The World \, and an activity pack with illustrations to color and share during the show. \nHalloween activities have been cancelled in many communities\, but instead of feeling blue\, we’ve decided to throw the biggest costume party ever! Join Latin GRAMMY Winning musician/author\, MISTER G and the Global Citizen Ensemble for an international celebration\, broadcast live from the historic Academy of Music Theatre. Make a costume\, carve a pumpkin\, decorate your home\, and share your creativity on camera in this Zoom-style event where the performers can see and interact with families at home. \nAs part of the show\, we’ll travel to Mexico and learn about Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)\, which takes place at the same time as Halloween\, but has its own rich cultural history. We’ll visit several families in the US and Mexico to learn how they honor their loved ones and explore the ways that they are celebrating this year. \nProduced in partnership with Laudable Productions\, the event will be broadcast live from the historic Academy of Music Theatre with professional sound\, lighting\, and film production. Participants join via video conference\, turning on their cameras so that they can “be seen” by the performers on a video wall at the front of the stage. During the show\, our directors weave footage of children and families into the broadcast\, giving the audience a glimpse of the singing\, dancing\, hand motions\, and joy that is taking place at home in real time (think Jumbotron at a sporting event). The interactivity spurs engagement and elevates the feeling of togetherness so that children and families can see each other across borders\, share their creativity\, and celebrate our shared global community. \nABOUT MISTER G\nBen Gundersheimer is a Latin GRAMMY Award-winning artist\, author\, activist and educator. Hailed as “a bilingual rock star” by the Washington Post\, he was originally dubbed MISTER G by his young students while pursuing a Masters of Education degree. His dynamic\, interactive bilingual performances aim to dissolve borders and foster cross-cultural connections. \nIn the music community\, Ben is known as a collaborator. He has a long history of recording and performing with notable musicians from a wide range of musical and cultural backgrounds. \nAs an author\, Ben has published two picture books with Penguin Random House based on his original\, bilingual songs. “Señorita Mariposa” chronicles the extraordinary migration of the monarch butterflies from Canada to Mexico\, while “Lilah Tov Good Night” is a lyrical lullaby which celebrates the beauty of our world and the spirit of resilience in a refugee family. \nABOUT LAUDABLE PRODUCTIONS\nLaudable Productions is a creative agency known for producing festivals and concerts. Laudable believes in making magic for artists and audiences\, taking the pandemic moment to pioneer the way we see digital events while prioritizing shared experience and interactivity. Laudable is committed to making world-class music and art accessible to everyone; firm believers in the power of the arts to enrich our lives and knit communities together. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Alash with special guest Shodekeh
DESCRIPTION:Alash are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei)\, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this gifted trio from earlier generations of Tuvan throat singers is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music. One can find complex harmonies\, western instruments\, and contemporary song forms in Alash’s music\, but its overall sound and spirit remain decidedly Tuvan. For this\, their second performance at The ArtsCenter\, they are joined by Shodekeh\, a Baltimore-based beatboxer and vocal percussionist. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Richard Smith
DESCRIPTION:World-renowned fingerstyle guitarist Richard Smith makes his ArtsCenter debut! His repertoire includes original compositions\, gypsy swing\, Bach\, and Beatles\, not to mention classic fingerstyle guitar arrangements. Smith started playing guitar at age 5\, often getting a piece of music under his fingers after only a single hearing\, and developed a unique style combining thumbpicking and flatpicking. He has shared the stage with a virtual “who’s who“ of string wizardry\, including Joe Pass\, Les Paul\, Sam Bush\, and Béla Fleck. If you enjoyed Leo Kottke or Lulo Reinhardt\, this is a show you won’t want to miss! SUMMARY:An Evening with Rissi Palmer with XOXOK
DESCRIPTION:Rissi Palmer\, who describes her musical style as “Southern Soul\,” has received widespread media attention in national publications including Ebony\, Parade\, People\, Newsweek\, Huffington Post\, Rolling Stone\, The Wall Street Journal and more. She has performed on the CBS Early Show\, CNN\, The Tavis Smiley Show\, Oprah & Friends\, at the White House\, Lincoln Center\, and the Grand Ole Opry. Rissi has also shared the stage with such notable artists as Charley Crockett\, Chris Young\, Taylor Swift and The Eagles\, to name a few. And\, on top of all that\, she made music history in 2007 with the release of her Top 40 debut single\, “Country Girl\,” becoming the first African-American woman to chart a country song since 1987. \nSince the release of her nationally distributed debut album\, Rissi has released two albums on her own indie label Baldilocks LLC\, including the children’s album Best Day Ever and her latest critically acclaimed EP\, The Back Porch Sessions. She is currently working on a new album scheduled for release in 2019. \nKeenan Jenkins’ musical career began during his Ph.D. studies at UNC-Chapel Hill\, where he played open mics and local showcases between long days on the third floor of the psychology building. By the time he’d finished his degree\, drained and discontent\, his musical moonlighting had meanwhile bloomed in full color. He took the cue and dove headfirst into the rich music scene in Carrboro\, NC. \nJenkins now performs as XOXOK\, crafting atmospheric soul music that is conceived on the fretboard\, cultivated at the microphone\, and cradled in headphones. The guitar and vocal influences are far-flung\, but cohesive—see Jeff Buckley\, Moses Sumney\, and Anna Calvi\, among others. His live performance is a model of intimacy and presence; armed with “sweet\, ringing vocals” (Queen City Nerve)\, XOXOK delivers impassioned songs with unabashed conviction. \nXOXOK’s debut EP Worthy is both a lush soundscape and an exercise in growth. On the opening track\, “Nancy\, M.D.”\, he declares\, “I need you / more than your patients will ever need you as their medic”. However\, by the final song (the title track\, “Worthy”)\, he has changed his tune: “I don’t need you to love me / I just want to be worthy”. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:An Evening with Bettye LaVette
DESCRIPTION:Bettye LaVette is no mere singer. She is an interpreter of the highest order. Whether the song originated as country\, rock\, pop\, or blues\, when she gets through with it\, it is pure R&B. She gets inside a song and shapes and twists it to convey all of the emotion that can be wrought from the lyric. To quote the late\, great George Jones: “Bettye is truly a ‘singer’s singer.’” \nOn these intimate shows\, Bettye is accompanied by her keyboard player\, Evan Mercer. She will be performing songs from throughout her 57 year career\, including songs that she used to perform in small Detroit clubs before her 21st Century resurgence began. Some of these songs she does not perform with her full band. \nHer career began in 1962\, at the age of 16\, in Detroit\, Michigan. Her first single “My Man – He’s a Loving Man”\, was released on Atlantic Records. She recorded for numerous major labels\, including Atco\, Epic\, and Motown\, over the course of the 1960s through the 1980s. \nThe 2000’s started what she calls her “Fifth Career”. Her CD\, A Woman Like Me\, won the W.C. Handy Award in 2004 for Comeback Blues Album of the Year. She was also given a prestigious Pioneer Award by The Rhythm & Blues Foundation. She has received Blues Music Awards for Best Contemporary Female Blues Singer and Best Soul Blues Female Artist. She recorded 4 CDs for hipster indie label ANTI- Records over the course of 8 years\, 2 of which received Grammy nominations. Her 2015 CD\, Worthy\, was also nominated for a Grammy. \nIn 2018 she released Things Have Changed\, an album of all Bob Dylan songs\, for Verve Records. It received two Grammy nominations\, one for Best Americana Album\, and one for the song “Don’t Fall Apart On Me Tonight” for Best Traditional R&B Performance. \nFans\, critics and artists have nothing but high praise for her live show and her vocal prowess. Now\, at 73 years old\, she is still performing with the ferocity of a woman half her age. She is one of very few of her contemporaries who were recording during the birth of soul music in the 1960s and is still creating vital recordings today. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Che Apalache
DESCRIPTION:Che Apalache is a four-man Latingrass band based in Buenos Aires with members from Argentina\, Mexico and the United States. Their style combines South American music and Bluegrass\, ranging from vivid Latin rhythms to a cappella mountain gospel songs sung in four part harmony. The group’s founder is Joe Troop (fiddle)\, a North Carolina-born multi-instrumentalist\, singer-songwriter and composer who moved to Argentina in 2010. While patiently carving out a niche in the local music scene\, Joe taught bluegrass and old-time music for a living. That’s how he met Pau Barjau (banjo)\, Franco Martino (guitar) and Martin Bobrik (mandolin)\, his most dedicated students. They quickly became picking buddies and in 2013 decided to form Che Apalache and hit the stage\, initially as a bluegrass band\, but eventually incorporating Latin American styles into their repertoire. Blending instrumental prowess with tight vocal harmonies\, they have created an authentic blend of genres to reflect the nature of their lives. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:William Fitzsimmons
DESCRIPTION:Singer-songwriter and music producer William Fitzsimmons’ latest record\, Mission Bell is a chronicling of the tumultuous last year of his life\, particularly of the separation from his second wife. An initial version of the album was originally recorded in Fitzsimmons’ home studio in the summer of 2017 but was subsequently abandoned during the course of\, and as a result of\, the separation. \nIn 2018 William traveled to Nashville\, TN to start recording the album over from square one. Working with producer Adam Landry (Deer Tick\, Los Lobos\, k.d. Lang\, Vanessa Carlton)\, Fitzsimmons spent a month’s time rebuilding the lost record\, with contributions from friends\, including Abby Gundersen and Rosie Thomas. The resulting 11-song album tells the story of a decade-long marriage destroyed and eventually rebuilt from the ground up. \nThe process and the results are both painful and healing\, but also respect the complexity of humans\, especially at their worst. This is not an exercise in “good-guy\, bad-guy” songwriting; rather an attempt to find empathy\, even when people are at their most depraved. Mission Bell includes songs about betrayal\, but also reconciliation and forgiveness. Choosing to go deeper than mere absolutism and fate\, these are stories of people doing their best\, but still managing to often destroy each other in the process. \n“Having to let go of the first version of this record was incredibly strange and something I’ve never done before. But it was the right thing to do. That record was made at a time when nearly all involved\, including myself\, were living dishonestly and selfishly and poorly\, and it was clear in the results. When I was forced to see the truth of how rotten things had become inside and around me\, I deleted every note and every word. My dear friend and manager\, Rishon\, connected me with producer Adam Landry\, and together the two of us spent weeks upon weeks breathing back life into a project that I thought was lost for good. By the time we finished\, I felt like I had reclaimed something that was taken from me and I remain terribly proud of this work as a result\,” says Fitzsimmons. \nSonically\, Mission Bell is Fitzsimmons’ first analog tape-centric album. The sounds are raw\, real\, and tangible. The familiar comforts of acoustic guitars are present but now joined generously by synthesizers\, electric guitars\, drum loops and violins. “Cutting to tape was new and honestly rather terrifying to me. There’s no “we’ll fix that in post” kind of shit going on. What you play is what you’re gonna hear on the record. But there’s a specialness you get in a performance when you don’t have a parachute. You either play it like it matters to you or you don’t and I think that comes through so clearly in the recordings.” \nOriginally from Pittsburgh\, PA\, Fitzsimmons currently resides in Nashville\, TN. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Richard Shindell
DESCRIPTION:Richard Shindell is a New York- and Buenos Aires-based songwriter whose songs paint vivid worlds that expand our sense of what a song can be. From a stint at a Zen Buddhist Community in Upstate New York\, to busking in the Paris Metro\, to studying at Union Theological Seminary\, to New York City’s songwriter scene\, Shindell’s nomadic life and work have long explored themes of immanence and transcendence\, human love and divine love\, the particular and the general. In 1998\, Shindell joined forces with his friends and ArtsCenter favorites Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky to record CryCryCry\, a collection of covers. The group toured in support of this highly acclaimed album\, leaving audiences spellbound by their gorgeous three-part harmonies. Although known primarily as songwriter\, Shindell takes a more holistic view of his career. Producer\, writer\, singer\, guitarist\, interpreter: it all adds up to a life in music. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Jeanne Jolly
DESCRIPTION:Jeanne Jolly’s artistry encompasses the heartfelt confessional quality of the singer-songwriter tradition\, the earthiness of American roots music\, a hint of jazz sophistication\, and the smoldering emotionality of soul balladry. Her first album\, Angels\, debuted in the Top 15 on the iTunes singer/songwriter chart\, and she’s garnered plum accolades such as being praised as a singer/songwriter who “melds folksy\, soulful country with heavenly\, heartfelt lyricism” (News & Observer)\, and as a vocalist who “can easily shift to the dusky lilt of Alison Krauss or the sophisticated jazz phrasing of Rickie Lee Jones” (Missoulian). \nOn A Place To Run\, her music background comes together organically\, like never before. Her accomplished musicality\, intimate lyrics\, and passion and respect for the heritage of country\, folk\, and soul music smoothly blend together with elegant earthiness.\nA Place To Run is grittier and heavier\, in terms of groove and lyrical content\, than any of Jeanne’s previous releases. “We were going for a more soulful and unrestricted sound this time around.” Jeanne confirms. “The rich and earthy sounds of Wurlitzer organs\, woodwinds\, lap steel\, Juno\, guitars\, and thick vocal harmonies bring a deeper and more soul stirring sound overall.” The album was tracked at The Fidelitorium in Kernersville\, NC with a special eight-piece band. “We carefully chose the musicians we love to record with us\,” Jeanne reveals. The band features childhood friend and Hot at Nights guitarist Chris Boerner\, Jeanne’s longtime pedal steel player Allyn Love\, Phil Cook and Brad Cook from the acclaimed Raleigh band Megafaun\, and Bon Iver drummer Matt McCaughan\, among other stellar instrumentalists James Wallace & Matt Douglas. \nThe profound themes of love\, loss\, and running between these extremes permeates the album. On the country-porch soul of “Gypsy Skin” Jeanne sings\, “let me be your sweet relief/let me light up your darkest night.” Here\, she offers a place for her lover to run to\, as a home away from a restless heart. The beautifully complex tapestry of moony melodicism on “California” cycles through acceptance & mourning until reaching a peaceful closure. The album title is from a lyric in the swampy and stately “Boundless Love.” “That song is about the fact that everyone needs a place to run. The message is–don’t put limitations on love and expression\, be free and bold with your love\, and pray with your feet moving. Don’t wait around for life to come to you.” Jeanne says. \n\n\n	Related
