SUMMARY:SCHEHERAZADE* | An Evening of Persian Flavors\, Fine Wine and Visual Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, May 31st\, in the ArtsCenter Theatre for a richly layered evening that weaves together the culinary\, the cultural\, and the visual.\nThis immersive Persian wine dinner will transport you through taste\, texture\, and storytelling. Experience vibrant Persian cuisine\, paired with thoughtfully selected wines\, and the evocative photography of Sia Yazdanfar. \nCatered by Giorgios Hospitality Group and designed by Sia Yazdanfar\, the evening begins with a sparkling wine social hour\, where guests will mingle over passed hors d’oeuvres as your host welcomes you. Once seated\, a family-style feast will unfold. Red and white wines will be served alongside the variety of stews and kabobs\, allowing you to explore the food and drink at your own pace. To close the meal\, guests will enjoy mini Iranian sweets-infused with rosewater\, cardamom\, and pistachio-served alongside traditional Persian chai\, offering a fragrant\, comforting end to the evening. \nThroughout the dinner\, Sia will share insights into his photographic journey and introduce his exhibition\, OF QUICKSILVER AND DUST. His work captures the lyrical quality of desert landscapes\, where endless ridges\, salt flats\, and wind-carved textures create a visual symphony: \n“Photography is frozen music. There is a lyrical aspect present in certain images\, and nowhere is this more visible than in scenes of desert landscapes…\nFrom honeycomb salt patterns to flowing dunes\, these elements echo musical notes-sometimes in harmony\, sometimes in tension.” \nAs flavors unfold on the table\, so too will stories of travel\, culture\, and the quiet beauty of nature captured through a lens. This event is not just a meal\, but an experience:\na celebration of Persian heritage through food\, wine\, and art. \nEvent will be held Saturday\, May 31st\, 2025 at the ArtsCenter | $95\n6:15 PM Social | Sweet Bay Gallery\n7:00 PM Dinner | Theater \n*SCHEHERAZADE is a nod to the legendary storyteller from One Thousand and One Nights\, a collection of Middle Eastern folk tales that were compiled during the 9th century CE. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:ARTIST RECEPTION & SPECIAL MUSICAL PERFORMANCE / OF QUICKSILVER AND DUST
DESCRIPTION:Dear Friends and Patrons\,\nJoin us this Friday evening for a celebration of live music and art at the Sweet Bay Gallery in the ArtsCenter. Crystal Bright will be performing selections of her original songs and standards during the artist reception for the ongoing exhibition\, OF QUICKSILVER AND DUST. \nCrystal’s music has been called “carnival folk\, fairy tale pop and gypsy jazz” and was described by the BBC as “a pleasant kind of bonkers.” Her singing has been expressed as captivating and mysterious\, featuring her mystical\, even otherworldly vocal inflections. A versatile musician and songwriter\, she creates a haunted\, whimsical\, multicultural sonic cabaret\, unique and beautifully orchestrated. \nOn display in the Sweet Bay Gallery is OF QUICKSILVER AND DUST\, a collection of photographs from journeys to various deserts and desert settlements in the heart of Iran. Expedition photographer Sia Yazdanfar spent August 2024 through March 2025 exploring the unforgiving landscapes and resilient people at these edges of the Middle East. This series of archival prints highlights the diverse spaces within these arid regions\, some a no man’s land of endless horizons\, and others punctuated by colorful bursts of life from desert dwellers\, both human and animal. \nFriday / May 16th\, 2025 / 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm\nArtsCenter / 400 Roberson St / Carrboro NC\nA selection of refreshments and artisanal Persian pastries will be provided. \nFor more information please email contact@siayazdanfar.com or check out the exhibition page for OF QUICKSILVER AND DUST at www.siayazdanfar.com \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Of Quicksilver And Dust : Postcards From The Edge Of The Middle East
DESCRIPTION:Photography is frozen music. There is a lyrical aspect present in certain images\, & nowhere is this more visible than in scenes of desert landscapes. From repetitive patterns of interminable ridges\, to the honeycomb & fractal designs in windswept salt flats\, a mellifluous symphony is on full display. \nElements like lines\, shapes\, & textures interact\, leading the viewer’s eyes through nature’s quiet concert\, creating a sense of harmony or dissonance\, much like musical notes & chords. \nThe deserts in Iran\, or ‘kavir’ as they’re called in Persian\, aren’t one thing. They are landscapes of constant motion\, of shape shifting sands & mirages. They are the territories of camel caravans & ancient villages\, crisscrossed by trade routes & dotted by caravanserai. They are home to people for whom traditional ways of life continue as they have for centuries\, despite the changing borders & migratory dunes of these unique ecosystems. \nDespite being places of great stillness\, deserts are alive & in perpetual flux. When broken down to their smallest components\, they are all comprised of similar grains of sand. However each kavir is a diverse space\, some a no man’s land of endless horizons\, & others punctuated by colorful bursts of life from desert dwellers\, both human & animal. From August 2024 through February 2025\, I explored various such regions & some surrounding settlements. With this collection of snapshots\, I invite you to come along & see the songs of the sands through my eyes. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:2nd Friday Art Walk / Sayeh Ensemble / Sia Yazdanfar
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of live music & art this Friday evening at the ArtsCenter. The Sayeh Ensemble will be performing Iranian classical and Sufi music during the artist reception for expedition photographer Sia Yazdanfar. Two distinct collections of work are on display in the Sweet Bay Gallery & the Theater Gallery: \nNO FRIENDS BUT THE MOUNTAINS provides a glimpse into the daily lives of Kurdish people in the namesake mountainous Kurdistan Province\, where untamed landscapes are dotted by stepped villages\, home to a unique culture\, heritage\, & language that has been preserved for centuries. These images are the result of long-term photographic expeditions in 2023. \nRESTLESS ANAHITA is a kaleidoscopic journey through the fabric of female clothing in remote corners of Iran. The photographs are a variegated\, parti-colored passage through the rainbow of traditional garb in my motherland. Highlighting garments from the northwest mountains of Gilan\, to the sun-kissed islands of south-central Hormozgan\, these images pay homage to our mothers\, sisters\, and daughters \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Dual Exhibitions: No Friends but the Mountains / Restless Anahita
DESCRIPTION:Join us from July 10th thru August 5th for these dual exhibitions showcasing the photographic storytelling of Sia Yazdanfar. NO FRIENDS BUT THE MOUNTAINS & RESTLESS ANAHITA are continuing bodies of work\, each documenting aspects of traditional worlds in the Middle East. \nAfter the enthusiastic reception of the exhibitions at other venues\, we are thrilled to announce these dates at the ArtsCenter.\nThe collections of images will be on display in two galleries: Theater Gallery and the Sweet Bay Gallery. \nPer Sia Yazdanfar: \nNO FRIENDS BUT THE MOUNTAINS provides a glimpse into the daily lives of Kurdish people in the namesake mountainous Kurdistan Province\, where untamed landscapes are dotted by stepped villages\, home to a unique culture\, heritage\, & language that has been preserved for centuries. Highlighting garments from the northwest mountains of Gilan\, to the sun-kissed islands of south-central Hormozgan\, these images pay homage to our mothers\, sisters\, and daughters. \nArtist reception: Friday\, July 12th\, from 6-8:30 PM\, featuring a special performance of Iranian & Sufi music by Sayeh Ensemble. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Restless Anahita
DESCRIPTION:My focus since first returning to my motherland in 2017 has been to bridge a gap between the two cultures that have formed me. With each new series of travels & photographic expeditions\, I seek out under-explored & less revealed people & places of Iran.\nAnnual odysseys to the Middle East continued throughout the pandemic\, travels navigated carefully as I crisscrossed the country from the Caspian Coast to the Persian Gulf. Looking through my catalog of over 200\,000 photos from these past six years\, I began focusing on the unique & colorful traditional garb of Iranian women in different localities. In a country where religious law\, tradition\, climate\, & function dictate clothing\, beauty oftentimes is expressed through garments\, as faces & hair are usually covered up. In the traditional Iranian view\, the ideal society was one in which women were confined to the home\, performing the various domestic tasks associated with managing a household & rearing children. Men worked in the public sphere\, that is\, in the fields\, factories\, bazaars\, & offices. While that is no longer the present state of affairs\, outside of urban centers & particularly in rural areas\, the tradition of wearing hand-sewn\, bright colored & bejeweled dress remains\, woven into the fabric of different ethnicities & tribes.\nThis exhibition will highlight just that\, a variegated\, parti-colored passage through the rainbow of traditional cloth. Selections of worn fabrics & patterns from various provinces will be spotlighted\, with people photographed both in their daily lives as well as non-traditional settings. The images for the exhibition will draw from never before seen selections of my previous work\, as well as what an extended recent trek to the region\, from September 2022 thru February 2023\, yielded. \n\n\n	Related
