It allows the art-making process to reveal what is unconscious conscious through layers of images and patterns that create a visual story. In this exhibit\, each artist shares a different focus of their intuitive practices including composing sculptural forms using digitally altered photographs that question what one identifies as reality\, creating abstract line art using textiles and stitching that celebrate resilience and perseverance\, and constructing three-dimensional paper weavings that invite the viewer to look deeply at the layers that speak of a history of depression\, healing\, and strength. DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of collage with Eno Arts Mill studio artists Mary Ann Rozear and Sandy Sachs.  \nCome discover the joy of using paper to create or enhance a painting. This four week class will introduce you to the basic concepts and possibilities of collage and by the end you will have four different completed collage works. \nWeek One: Intro to materials and a magazine collage \nWeek Two: Abstract collage \nWeek Three: Negative painting collage \nWeek Four: Floral or landscape collage \nAll paints\, gel medium\, brushes\, substrates and some papers supplied. \nAdditional (optional) packet of specialty papers available to purchase $12 directly from instructors during class. $140 \nAbout the Artists: \nMary Ann Rozear and Sandra L. Sachs are both studio artists at the Eno Arts Mill\, and they will be co-facilitating the classes. \nMary Ann is an award winning artist who recently moved to Durham from Hampstead\, NC. Her subject matter is as varied as her choice of medium. Whether using watercolors\, acrylics\, or oils she strives to elicit an emotional response from the viewer with each painting. Mary Ann began painting in 2002 while living in Blowing Rock\, NC\, where she studied for six years with many master painters. She was most influenced by Mary Ann Beckwith\, Gerald Brommer\, and Skip Lawrence\, whose philosophy was to encourage each student to paint in their own style. Mary Ann has developed her own unique approach to painting\, believing that the enjoyment she gets during the process of painting translates to the finished piece. \nSandra is a self-taught artist with mixed media abstract art being her first passion. Having been an elementary school teacher for 30 years\, she is excited to work her way into the Hillsborough art community and be in close proximity with other artists at the Eno River Mill. DESCRIPTION:Meditative Chiming with Katie Shlon\, $75 \nRoughly two hours will be devoted to students making their own chimes! We will spend the first 30 minutes & last 30 minutes of this workshop doing listening exercises to concentrate our awareness on the conceptual meaning of the sound of these objects\, in conversation with the wind\, birds\, and whatever else is sounding near the Mill. Because reuse is an important element of the workshop\, students would be encouraged to bring supplies for instrument making. Ideas for chimes: scraps of wood\, dowels\, ceramic shards\, beads\, various brass and copper cups and pipes\, and whatever else seems to have potential for exploration. The artist will also have some additional objects available for exploration. The artist will supply pairs of scissors and/or wire cutters\, a roll of fishing line\, and several yards of rope for construction. \nStudent materials List:\n5-10 objects gathered from around your house\, yard\, sidewalks\, that have the potential for sound (or not). Confronted by a surge in White supremacist activity and Confederate nostalgia in the nation that he calls home\, one father struggles to explain this wave of hatred and bigotry to his son. In HAUNTED\, actor and playwright\, Dr. Sonny Kelly takes on the voices of historians\, ancestors\, elders\, youths\, politicians\, pundits\, and poets\, as he traces the roots and routes of modern day anti-Black violence in America. Kelly recounts the roots of hatred and fear embedded in the story of the 1898 lynching of Manley McCauley in Orange County\, North Carolina. He also tracks the routes of racialized violence in America as manifested in the colonial justice system\, the Wilmington Massacre of 1898\, the 2015 shooting at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston\, South Carolina\, and the 2020 lynching of Ahmaud Arberry in Brunswick\, Georgia. Yet silence itself can still send a loud and clear message. It is this concept that Wan has chosen to depict through hundreds of rusted bells that have been coated with wax so that they no longer make any sound. This simple yet evocative image allows the artist to express the sensation of hidden voices that have been forced into silence but retain a pure inner presence that echoes through the silent bells. Wan conveys this concept of a silent force both visually and through dance on opening night\, April 10\, 5:50-6:10pm. \nThis will be a first time collaboration with the young Taiwanese choreographer\, Pin-Han Lin\, who will work with two dancers\, Emilie Raleigh and Megan Ross\, to create a dance piece to address the idea of silent tears responding to the violence\, sacrifice and compromise existing in our prejudiced and unequal society. They hope\, through this collaboration\, to raise awareness for those whose voices remain silenced. \nWan-Bio \nFor more than two decades\, Jan-Ru Wan has been re-using found objects\, especially those discarded from industrial factories\, in her sculpture and installation work\, re-inventing and elevating their original purpose. Her unique way of incorporating wildly diverse materials with layers of repetition and creating a space of awe is the signature of her installation works. \nThroughout Wan’s career\, she has participated in 30 solo exhibitions and 45 group exhibitions\, including the 1st International Biennial of Casablanca at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Art in Taiwan; the Yango-Biennial in Kinshasa\, Congo and her solo exhibition at the Mint Museum in Charlotte NC\, April 2019. Her work has been featured in Surface Design Magazine and Sculpture Magazine. The National Art Education Association Anthology: Globalization\, Art\, and Education devoted an entire chapter on her work. In 2006\, The University of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee honored Wan with the GOLD award. Wan is also the recipient of North Carolina’s 2008 Visual Art Fellowship.
