SUMMARY:Myth America – storytelling to get out the vote
DESCRIPTION:What do an immigrant\, an unhoused person\, an essential worker and a child in her unstudied wisdom have in common? Their voices are rarely heard center stage\, though their humanity calls to our own. \nGRAMMY-nominated storyteller Milbre Burch shares these characters’ stories along with family history and personal tales in a series of FREE performances of her one-woman show\, Myth America. The series is supported by the Orange County Arts Commission at venues throughout the county. \nOn Friday\, November 1st at 7 pm\, Burch will perform the 65-minute show as a FREE Get-Out-the-Vote event at the Hargraves Community Center\, 216 N. Roberson in the historic Northside neighborhood of Chapel Hill. \nA Past President of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP\, community activist Eugene Farrar will emcee and lead a post-show conversation. Light refreshments will be served. \nParking is available on either side of the Center with another lot just beyond the playing field. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Myth America - storytelling show for grownups by Milbre Burch
DESCRIPTION:What do an Irish immigrant\, an unhoused person\, an essential worker and a child in her unstudied wisdom have in common? Their humanity calls to our own. \nThis free storytelling performance for adult audiences is a retrospective show for our times\, comprised of three original dramatic monologues written across Milbre Burch’s nearly-fifty-year career alongside family history and a personal story. Drawing on a “crazy quilt” of American experience\, Burch places several unexpected voices at center stage. \nThis show on Wednesday\, October 9th\, 2024 at 6:30 pm at the Chapel Hill Public Library\, 100 Library Drive in Chapel Hill\, will include a voter registration drive assisted by Orange Durham Chatham County Branch of the League of Women Voters. So bring your family\, friends and first-time voting teenagers who still need to register to this event. \nFollowing Burch’s performance\, Dr. Sonny Kelly\, storyteller and speaker extraordinaire\, will lead a community conversation with the artist and the audience. \n\n\n	Related

He graduated from The University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a Creative Writing Degree. After years of toiling in front of a computer and traveling the world in a rock n roll band\, Scott sat down in front of a canvas\, squeezed colored oil onto a palette\, and accidentally found the way he wanted to spend the rest of his life. Scott is a self-taught artist\, working in oils\, looking to capture the vibrant world he sees around himself. He describes his works as Saturated Realism\, or sometimes Acidism\, and then sometimes also impressionism. Maybe a little expressionism? Hard say really. He was honored with solo shows at the Louise Jones Brown Gallery at Duke University\, the Center for the Study of the American South\, at the University of North Carolina\, and the Page-Walker Arts Center in Cary\, North Carolina. His works are in many private collections\, including The Purdue Pharmaceutical Permanent Collection and The Woodlands Collections of Chapel Hill. SUMMARY:Lee Smith & Nancy Peacock: The Importance of Mentorship
DESCRIPTION:In 1993 Nancy Peacock (Life Without Water\, A Broom of One’s Own\, The Life and Times of Persimmon Wilson) was struggling to write her first novel. She was not enrolled in a university or a writing class\, and with the exception of a smattering of friends who were also trying to figure out how to write their first novels\, was alone with the effort. She reached out to Lee Smith (Dimestore\, Guests on Earth\, Fair and Tender Ladies)\, from whom she’d taken a writing class years earlier. \nSmith suggested the young writer send her each chapter of the novel as she completed it\, and over a course of a year Nancy did just that\, mailing a first draft chapter roughly every month to her\, and building a relationship of mentorship that resulted in not only the completion of that novel\, but its publication in 1996\, and its selection is a New York Times Notable Book. Since then Peacock has gone on to write and publish two more novels and a memoir\, and has mentored other beginning writers. \nLocal authors Nancy Peacock and Lee Smith will host a public discussion on the importance of mentorship May 1\, 2018\, from 6:30 to 7:30 at the Orange County Library\, located at 137 W. Margaret Lane in Hillsborough. The event is free and open to the public. \nThis event is presented by the Piedmont Laureate program\, an initiative of the Orange County Arts Commission\, City of Raleigh Arts Commission\, Durham Arts Council\, and the United Arts Council of Raleigh & Wake County. The Piedmont Laureate program’s mission is to promote awareness and heighten appreciation for excellence in the literary arts throughout the Piedmont region.
