DESCRIPTION:Online Streaming Concert with Big Ron Hunter – All Concerts available after premiere on youtube \nMusic Maker Relief Foundation has partnered with the Arts and Science Council and Mecklenburg County Library to present the NC Roots Music Series featuring live stream performances by North Carolina musicians: Lakota John\, The Hamiltones\, Dedicated Men of Zion\, Martha Spencer\, and Big Ron Hunter. The shows will be aired live every third Thursday of August\, September\, October\, November\, and December at 6pm via Facebook Live and YouTube Live. \nFounded in 1994\, Music Maker works to promote American roots music by partnering directly with the musicians that make it. This series represents the diverse musical genres of North Carolina. \nRon is called the world’s happiest Bluesman. He owns a voice that gives people chills. It’s the kind of voice that carries warmth and tenderness\, a voice that is unmistakably his own and embodies everything that’s raw\, pure and beautiful about the blues. Ron Hunter was born in Winston-Salem\, NC. His father\, who was a sharecropper\, taught Ron how to sing and play the guitar at a young age. Mentored by the legendary Guitar Gabriel and versed in R&B\, Rock & the Blues of BB King\, Ron plays both electric and acoustic guitars in dramatically different styles. From Gabe’s advice\, Hunter developed his unique sound all while raising a family and working a day job. As a maintenance man\, you could find Ron locked up in his closet-sized office\, plucking away at his guitar and pouring out the blues. \nThe NC Roots Music Series is sponsored by Culture Blocks—a community partnership between ASC\, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library\, and Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation to bring arts and cultural experiences closer to where residents live. SUMMARY:Freeman Vines: Hanging Tree Guitars\, Virtual Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Hanging Tree Guitars introduces the work of African American luthier and visual artist Freeman Vines. Vines’ sculptures are imbued with an expressive form and symbolic imagery\, shaped by hand from repurposed wood sourced from the natural and built landscapes around his home in an eastern North Carolina farming community. \nFreeman Vines’ instruments are sculpted from repurposed wood and found materials which are arranged to illuminate the spirit of each object. Among Vines’ most arresting works are a series of guitars carved from sections of a black walnut tree on which an African American man named Oliver Moore was lynched in 1930\, an event that marked one of the final documented lynchings in the state of North Carolina. Vines has crafted this wood into potent and haunting objects\, reclaiming the trophies of past racial violence and transforming it into guitars and a collection of sculpture. \nImages by Timothy Duffy offer a lens on Vines’ person\, environment\, and art\, framing and refracting the psychological impact of the work within the social and historical context of the American South. Transcribed interviews with Vines immerse viewers in the artist’s worldview\, exploring themes of memory\, racial identity\, and spirituality in the rural South. \nA companion book\, Hanging Tree Guitars by Freeman Vines withZoe Van Buren and photographs by Timothy Duffy is now available at musicmaker.org. \nThis exhibit was made possible with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. \n\n\n	Related
