SUMMARY:Loops & Bloops
DESCRIPTION:Visiting artists Lauren Leone and Mike Gintz present an artist talk and hands-on embroidery workshop. The event is based on an artistic collaboration they titled “Loops & Bloops”\, a creative conversation between their chosen mediums – embroidery and electronic music\, respectively. As distant as those art forms may superficially seem\, the back and forth tradeoff proved to be a demonstration of how ideas can be translated across disciplines\, from the aural to the visual\, ephemeral to tactile\, and back again. The result — a “red” thread starting with Lauren’s embroidery\, and a parallel “black” thread starting with Mike’s synthesizer explorations — is a synesthetic testament to the acts of listening\, observing\, and responding in kind. \nLauren will teach attendees to embroider (no prior sewing experience necessary; all materials will be provided) while Mike performs a mix of music created during the residency and live improvisation. Attendees can respond to his music in real time with some improvisational embroidery\, culminating in the creation of an ephemeral community “Loops & Bloops” quilt before folks depart with their work. \nLeading up to and through their residency\, Lauren is soliciting textile donations to use in the work she creates during her time at LEVEL. She is drawn to the stories that textiles hold. If you would like to contribute\, contact levelretreat@gmail.com to arrange a drop off of any old clothes or fabric scraps\, with an optional note about the materials you’re donating. \n* Please note: In the spirit of community care\, masking is encouraged for this event. Lauren’s work frequently addresses chronic illness and disability and she is invested in creating safer\, more inclusive spaces for art-making and community gatherings. \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Art-making Workshops with Caroline Kern
DESCRIPTION:Join visiting artist Caroline Kern and LEVEL for some collaborative art-making! Come with projects to work on\, whether that is a drawing\, a website\, a half knitted sweater\, or whatever else you might be working on that you need a little push to finish\, or get new ideas about. Think of this time as an informal community incubator/co-working session to help you flesh out a creative project you are working on – or want to begin! It will also be a time to share amongst other creatives on how to self motivate and maneuver through the challenging aspects of the projects we start\, but might not always finish. Caroline believes that making tangible items – and sharing them\, particularly over several co-working sessions – creates and maintains a sense of community. \nThis is a FREE event\, but space is limited! Please register at https://forms.gle/QavCfsNSLbCckioo7 \nMore info at https://www.levelretreat.com/carolinekern \n\n\n	Related

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Caroline Kern
DESCRIPTION:LEVEL’s next artist-in-residence\, Caroline Kern\, presents a free artist talk on the rooftop at Attic 506! \nCaroline is a multi-disciplinary artist living and working most recently in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania after over a decade in Brooklyn\, New York. Her work currently revolves around Risograph printing\, illustration\, experimental video\, and machine tufting. She is the sole proprietress of Pegacorn Press\, a feminist\, queer\, “total-art-freaker\,” publishing adventure founded in 2011 after self publishing since 1996. She has collaborated with countless artists to produce publications using Risograph stencil duplicators\, as well as other printed ephemera. \nCaroline will speak about her experiences as a DIY artist as well as her work at LEVEL towards a new mixed genre book about living with mild traumatic brain injury\, post concussion syndrome\, and her experiences with Long COVID. Drawing from her extensive career in printed ephemera\, Caroline is working to combine narrative writing\, illustration\, and comic art to document her health journey and help viewers become better allies to those afflicted with health setbacks. She will also be screening selections from her video work. \nThis event is made possible by a grant from the Orange County Arts Commission. \n\n\n	Related
